Kate Mulgrew

Kate Mulgrew's official website is on the Infobox. I did not see the point of duplicating the link to her website when it was clearly referenced in the Infobox at the top of the page.--Tovojolo 09:15, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

My edit of Gold Rush

In regard to me editing the Gold Rush article, I was actually fixing a vandalism, if you had even bothered to read what I deleted, you would have recognized the poor grammar and the local bias.

You deleted a whole paragraph. Here is the differential which shows the paragraph your edit deleted and that I restored. Ronbo76 22:08, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
If your intent was that is written poorly, you should attempt to fix the paragraph. The worst thing to do is just delete it without indicating what your intent in Edit summary at the bottom of the edit window. My comment or edit summary will be: paragraph may need work. That tells another editors why you did what you did. Ronbo76 22:12, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Here is what you are missing. Please see this linked article on Bodie, California. That's why I as an editor restored the passage. It has a link and pictures which you are probably unfamilar with. I am part of the Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Ghost towns and WP:CAL. You can see my project tags on my userpage User:Ronbo76. I will restore the paragraph after reworking it a bit. If you want to delete content, it is best to discuss deletion prior on the article's talkpage: Talk:Gold rush. I hope this all helps. Cheers, Ronbo76 22:23, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the assist. Please look at the article you helped today. I would encourage to continue reading articles here and to register as user. Thanks again, Ronbo76 22:42, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

(Note: due to this user's input, his good faith warning was stricken. Ronbo76 22:43, 15 February 2007 (UTC))

Well-intended helpers always seem to show up

We've had them before, we'll have them again - patience is a virture, I'm told! NorCalHistory 22:50, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Check his contribs, this is what he (and others) spend their time doing. Oh, well. BTW, I see our first vandal has showed up. We're going to start running into edit conflict issues pretty quick as the vandal traffic starts in earnest. I'm going to leave vandal correction to you and others (thank you!) - but if it is well-intended substantive edits (like the one we've been talking about), if you could give me first crack at those, that would be appreciated! If I'm going to go "off-watch" I'll let you know. Buckle up and strap in! NorCalHistory 22:59, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm back

Thanks, Ronbo - I just stepped away for a bit, and now I'm back ... (extracting lightsaber . . .). NorCalHistory 04:56, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Changes and Consensus

Thank you Ronbo 76, now how can I seek this "consensus" regarding improvements to this(B.Hope) an other articles. Do you simply state your ideas, back it up with facts then ask for a vote or something else?(I'm not being condescending, I just want to really know how this truly works?)Micael 06:38, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Woops, I'm sorry Ronbo. Thanks for moving my message. I'm having a tough time getting familiar with how all this works.

Feature page

Since when? --Michael Johnson 11:48, 14 February 2007 (UTC) Are you saying that feature articles should not be edited? Because this is news to me = I am involved with several featured articles that are constantly edited. As for my edit, it is one sentence, fully referenced, and relevent to the paragraph to which it has been added. Cheers, --Michael Johnson 11:56, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Can you please provide references to these Misplaced Pages principles. I was just being wp:bold --Michael Johnson 12:01, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Please be bold, and look up them up yourself. Respectfully, Ronbo76 12:03, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, don't see a problem. One sentence attached to and relevent to a paragraph does not affect stability. I do agree the previous Hargraves paragraph (which btw I don't think appropiate) would have added substantially, and pushed the article off on a bit of a tangent. My edit was in responce to that para, and an effort to incorporate an important, if minor, point within the appropiate section of the aticle. --Michael Johnson 12:10, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Substing user warnings

When using certain template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:uw-test1}} instead of {{uw-test1}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

I have been told that the uw templates are not listed in the list of warnings which should be substed. They should, because the same kinds of vandals who would vandalise articles might vandalise warning templates as well. Cascading chaos would result. Keep up the good work. MKoltnow 13:16, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

(text inserted from User_Talk:MKoltnow)

Thanks for the compliment. I use Usual warnings. Too bad the page there does not have the substitute underneath the warnings I use. Ronbo76 13:19, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Actually the third paragraph of WP:TT specifically says remember always to subst these templates. You'll also probably find it easier to use internal links (inside double square brackets) rather than external links when referring to other Wiki pages. And to continue discussions in the same place they started--if someone leaves a note on your talk page, follow-up there. It will keep the discussion from getting disjointed. Any editor who leaves a comment on your talk page should watch for follow-up there. MKoltnow 13:31, 14 February 2007 (UTC
Thanks for all the comments. I have seen lots of different techniques. I tend to stick with what works for me until I can master the next level. As for the messages, I have seen both ways and even one user who will not come off his talkpage which is a direct reference to what you recommend. I view messages like email and respond just like an email. It goes from here to there (meaning the other user's talkpage). Learn something new each day. Thanks again for all the comments. I will mull them over. Cheers, Ronbo76 13:35, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Talk page discussions are not email. They are supposed to represent a discussion that can be read as a record. If you reply to another user's talk page, no one else will have any idea what is going on in the thread. MKoltnow 13:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
BTW, now I think I know why some users do not use or leave warnings as advice to other users. Having to drop down to the next substitute warning message is cumbersome. I have used other substitute type templates and they were not very user friendly - generating messages that improper usage was done and taking time to resolve. Will have to think this all through. Ronbo76 13:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I am not sure I understand what you are saying here about leaving messages being cumbersome. When you leave a warning on a vandal's page, simply type {{subst:uw-vandalism1}} instead of {{uw-vandalism1}}. You can optionally put the name of the article that got vandalised after a vertical pipe | character. That will substitute in the full text of the warning after you save the page. If you don't do that, some vandal might decide he doesn't like the vandal warning on his page and blank it (or worse). Now EVERY user who has the un-substed version of the warning template will have their talk page magically changed because the base template has changed. MKoltnow 13:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Trust me, I have used the sust templates before and they were a real pain. I do not have the vertical pipe key on my keyboard and have to grab it from elsewhere on a page/article which is another minor pain. Blanking? It occurs quite frequently on most vandal pages. I know to check the history tab prior to leaving a warning/advice (assuming good faith) message. Even regular users blank warnings. I have even seen one user overstrike my warning because she considered my warning superfluous. It takes all kinds (in reference to warnings and blankings). I will try the substitute method but if it is like my other template substitute experience, I may just not leave warnings like other users I have seen do an RV and then not leaving a message. Thanks again for all the comments. I have a lot of food for thought. Ronbo76 14:05, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Just did a warning and I had to either open/have open three windows. Hmmm. Ronbo76 14:11, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Two windows (last contrib/warning). Still cumbersome. Ronbo76 14:20, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I don't know what browser or keyboard you have. The vertical bar is on my keyboard at shift-backslash. Using any modern browser (even IE now) you can use tabbed browsing, which makes editing a great deal easier. I rarely need to have more than two tabs open. The first tab is open to the Special:Recentchanges page. I can then right-click (or shift-click on my mac) to open suspicious edits in another window. Normally I open them via diff, and undo the malicious ones. Then I click the newly-formed link to the vandal's talk page. I then take a peek at the text already there and leave an appropriate warning. {{subst:uw-vandalism1|Penis}} ~~~~ for example. I type all my warnings out by hand, and I use no scripts or special software to revert vandalism. I am not as speedy as those people who use special anti-vandal software, but you can check out my edit history. If you do not have a vertical bar, how do you insert a piped link? It's really not hard. If you are still having trouble, I would like to help. It sounds as if you are using some sort of special software. I have not yet seen the need for it, so unfortunately I cannot help with that. I am sure there are experienced users who can guide you. P.S. No offence intended when I reverted the comment about the CSRM. That was a casualty of moving this discussion here. It is a good museum. MKoltnow 14:54, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I don't want to go to IE7 yet. Trust me, I do not have the pipe key. As I type now, if I really want a |, I go to the bottom of the edit page and grab the pipe character between the Cancel/Edit messages. See how quick I replied? And, I am still somewhat a new user here. Ronbo76 14:57, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Well I am not sure what sort of help to offer you then. I use Firefox and Safari for my browsers. What kind of keyboard do you have that has no vertical bar on it? Also, indentation (with colons) serves a purpose. That is, it separates your text from others' so people can read the discussion more easily. It also helps keep threads together, which admittedly, I'm not doing a particularly good job of. So one more colon than the previous editor will nest your next comment conveniently for easy reading. MKoltnow 15:10, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

That last change (explicitly explaining what "Forty-Niner" refers to - see Misplaced Pages:Paris is in France!) was actually a good suggestion, but it should probably be in the regular part of the text, and not in the lead. Good faith edits to California Gold Rush

Hello, could you please hold off on edits to this article? It has had substantial review all this week prior to being a Featured Article. Please see the history diffs as noted members of the WP:CAL project, etal have looked at the article from top to bottom. Thanks, Ronbo76 04:00, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Here are the history diffs. User:NorCalHistory did a substantial copyedit followed by a member of the copyedit committee. User:SandyGeorgia, one of the Featured Articles committee has done edits prior to it becoming Featured. Of course, after reading this, you can do edits but I would ask you to wait a day or so. Thanks, Ronbo76 04:07, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
That is an unacceptable request. It is normal and proper for articles to be heavily edited while they are featured on the main page, and all articles must stand on their merits at all times. Wilchett 19:41, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I saw your edit on Pemberton Township High School. Another user, who blanked his talkpage, did some unsourced edits to that article. User:Christian15's edits look like vandalism to me. Would you please look at the article and edit it? Thanks, Ronbo76 06:51, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Award Proposal

Why don't you make the image in the shape of a star? Look at the other awards for guidance. --evrik  21:33, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

If you had bothered to read the re-write, you would see that my intent to give it to California related articles as a barnstar. The second proposed California Barnstar is for all California related articles and the text had been reworked to reflect that intent. Instead of opposing me, help me. Ronbo76 22:11, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Okay I may have misread your proposal ... Please rewrite them ... one note ... if they're not star shaped. They won't pass, and the likelyhood of getting a barnstar approved is not too good. Shoot for one award for all the WikiProjects. It will achieve the same thing. --evrik  22:14, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Nope, I didn't read it wrong. If you want to, change it back to a barnstar proposal and it will surely get defaeted ... both on the scope and the image. As a WP Award it will surely be approved, but only after you approve the image. Did I mention that I'm a member of WP:CAL? --evrik  22:18, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
    • As I said, I went back and read it again. There is no single statae that has a barnsatr. It will generate opposition. Go for the WP Award, make it in the shape of a star and READ what people are saying. --evrik  22:34, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

User:Taylor364's legal claim

That user has been deleting Talk:Kate Mulgrew. Supposedly there is something private in Mulgrew's past about the daughter she gave up for adoption to whom she was reconciled (according to another user claiming to be her husband) which has not been verified. Unfortunately Mulgrew's own website and multiple reliable sources are available for just about all aspects of the adoption/reconcilation. I do not to the best of my memory believe the daughter's name has been posted on Mulgrew's article.

Prior to the privacy claim, the article had a NPOV that IMHO was positive and in accordance with (IAW) WP:BLP. Upon the privacy claim, I invited a WP:BLP member to look over the article. He made some tweaks and recommendations. In addition, he provided the alleged husband with distinct methods of contacting Misplaced Pages directly to advance his issue. To date, this alleged person, who was a governor candidate, has not availed himself of the means to get the info stricken.

I am an average joe. But, if there was something I did not want on Misplaced Pages and was given the means to have it deleted IAW WP:BLP, I would exhaust all means. Ronbo76 22:40, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
