Shoryuken is roughly the japanese translation meaning "Rising Dragon Fist" ''("Sho"=Rising, "Ryu"=Dragon, "Ken"+Fist or Punch)''. It an attack developed by Goutetsu the creator of the martial art ]'' (or Shotokan)''. It is an aerial punch that spirals in mid-air and is very devastating. In the Goutetsu style of Ansatsuken, the Shouryuuken was meant to kill anyone in one stroke. In Gouken's school, the Shouryuuken was meant to bring the opponent closer to defeat, even without the Shouryuuken's "initial killing touch"

== How to Perform Shoryuken ==

<!-- Unsourced image removed: ] -->

Shoryuken is performed when the practioner concentrates all of his "ki" in his legs and striking fist and jumps into the air fist first in an upward spiraling motion. It is very destructive to the opponent when ascending, but practioner is vulnerable when descending. It was originally a move designed to kill an opponent when it's well-placed, but Gouken later on tailored the Shouryuuken to be a potent move without the killing touch. The Shoryuken has the best effect when the fist is still rising.

In video game terms, it is performed by a combination of directional buttons, followed by any punch button. The strength of the punch decides the height, damage and in some cases the invincibility of the Shoruyken. The correct sequence is forward, down, down forward and punch. Most variations of the Shoryuken have invincibility on start up, meaning they can't be hit or beaten out of it until it has finished its peak. Unfortunatly its invincibility is traded off with extreme vunrebility once the character starts to decend. They can be hit with almost anything on their decent or as soon as they touch the ground. Meaning, although it is an extremely useful move, it can be extremely dangerous when used inapropriately.

== Variations of Shoryuken ==

* '''Shoryuken'''(Rising Dragon Fist) - an spiraling punch moving at an upward arc-type motion. The Shouryuuken is invincible while the fist is rising, but the practitioner is vulnerable to counterattack when descending. When Gouken founded a non-violent variation of Ansatsuken, he was able to tone down the killing nature of this move, therefore it starts out strong in the ground and ends weak in the air. This Shoryuken is based on Gouken's non-violent beliefs.
** ''If fast enough, the Shouryuuken becomes a ''Shakunetsu Shouryuuken'' (Scorching Rising Dragon Knuckle)''—some people deduce that the Shakunetsu Shoryuken has enough force to burn cloth and flesh and is just as immolating as a Shakunetsu Hadouken.

* '''Shoryu Reppa'''(Multiple Rising Dragon) - a series of 2-3 Shoryukens that progessively causes more and more damage to an opponent each time he is hit. Not as lethal as the Messatsu Gou Shouryuu, but still a potent move.
** ''In the Marvel Vs. Games, last strike scorches opponent.''

* '''Shinryuken'''(True Dragon Fist) - a Shoryuken that moves vertically into the air causing a vacuum effect, which sucks in the opponent and strikes him multiple times. Of all the Light-Side Shoryukens that has no "killing touch", only the Shin Shoryuken has more potency than the Shinryuken, as it was self-discovered by Ken, the only user of this light-side Shoryuken.
** ''In the Marvel Vs. Games, The friction around it causes flames.''

* '''Shin Shoryuken'''(True Rising Dragon Fist) - the "Real" Shoryuken in which the practioner will strike the opponent very hard with one fist, and then perform a high-damage Shoryuken. If he misses with the first strike then he will just perform a normal Shoryuken with the other fist. Of all the Light-Side Shouryuukens, this is the most potent Shouryuuken without the killing "touch". Since Ryu was the practitioner who discovered this light-side Shoryuken, he's the only one capable of using it as it is known.

* '''Gou Shoryuken'''(Strong Rising Dragon Fist) - the original Shoryuken which is a more powerful variation of the regular Shoryuken. While this was a "bench" Shoryuken at the time the art was founded, the lethality of the move increases when the practitioner embraces the ]. This Shouryuuken knocks the foe high into the air and slices its foe as the fist is rising up. A well-placed Gou Shouryuuken can be extremely fatal to an opponent—has the ability to kill anyone in one stroke if the practitioner is good enough.

* '''Messatsu Gou Shoryu'''(Destructive Strong Rising Dragon Fist) - A stronger version of the Shoryu Reppa. While this move does not scorch the opponent, a well-placed Messatsu Gou Shouryuuken can instantly kill an opponent with the least amount of effort.

* '''Koryuken''' - A Shoryuken that is less powerful than a normal Shoryuken, and lacks range and potency.

* '''Koryu Rekka'''-The weakest of all the Shoryu supers due to its lack of range and power.

* '''Shoryu Cannon'''(Rising Dragon Cannon) - Another version of the Shoryu Reppa, but not as strong. Potent, but requires a good amount of Ki.

* '''Shoryu Smash'''(Rising Dragon Smash) - A variation of the Shoryuken, where the practioner uppercuts the opponent into the air and then attacking with a flying punch that knocks the opponent back to the ground.
** ''In ], it became a two-fisted uppercut.''

*'''Shououken'''-a dashing, non-violent Shoryu-type attack. It is less potent than the Shoryuken but the dashing nature of this move makes the move safe to use. Probably the most defensive of the Shoryu kind as it focuses on ground defense rather than classic Shoryu offense. Like the Gouken-Ryuu Shoryuken, the Shououken does not have the killing touch.

*'''Midare Zakura'''- A Shoryu-Reppa-variation of the Shououken. Not quite as damaging as the real Shoryu-Reppa but effective enough to incapacitate an opponent.

* '''Tiger Uppercut''' - a Muay-Thai varaition of the Shoryuken, that involves less spiraling. Starts low in the ground and ends in the sky. Like the Shouryuuken, the Tiger Uppercut does the most damage while the fist is still rising, but lacks invincibility.
**''Known as the Tiger Blow in later games, mostly during the Alpha Series.''
