He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Brooklyn College of CUNY, a Master of Science degree in environmental physiology from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He studied at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, and earned an Ed. D in science training and education from Southern Illinois University. He also studied at the University of Illinois. His doctoral studies were in science education and environmental physiology.

Early in his career, Dr. Shmaefsky worked as an industrial biochemist at Sigma Chemical Company where he developed biotechnology products and protocols. He then later became a professor at Northwestern Oklahoma State University as well as Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
