Iliya Markov Popgeorgiev, better known as Ilyo Voyvoda, was a Bulgarian revolutionary, who is considered a national hero in both Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia. He was born on 28 May 1822 in Berovo, today in the Republic of Macedonia, in the poor farmer family of Marko Popgeorgiev. In 1861 he participated in Bulgarian Legion in Belgrad. He was a key figure in two uprisings against the Ottoman Turks, the Razlog (1876) and Kresna (1878) Uprising. He was father-in-law of Dimitar Pop Georgiev (Berovski) the leader of both uprisings. He used every chance to make a contribution in any war against the Ottoman Empire, fighting both on Serbian and Russian side. Ilyo earned a medal for bravery during the Russo-Turkish War. He fought in battles all his life, and died from old age at the end of the 19th century in Kyustendil.

He is a near-mythical figure of the region and has been the subject of many folk songs. He is also called Kara Iliya, Ilyo Berovchanina, Ilyo Haramiyata, Ilyo Shopa, Ilyo/Iljo Malashevski, dyado Ilyo/dedo Iljo, kapitan Ilyo, Iljo aramijata, Iljo Berovecot etc.
