more love poetry to you (also not by me)

Her eyes the glow-worm lend thee,
 The shooting stars attend thee;
     And the elves also,
     Whose little eyes glow
Like the sparks of fire, befriend thee.

No Will-o'-th'-Wisp mis-light thee,
Nor snake or slow-worm bite thee;
     But on, on thy way,
     Not making a stay,
Since ghost there's none to affright thee.

Let not the dark thee cumber;
What though the moon does slumber?
     The stars of the night
     Will lend thee their light,
Like tapers clear without number.

Then Julia let me woo thee,
Thus, thus to come unto me;
     And when I shall meet
     Thy silv'ry feet,
My soul I'll pour into thee.

Great Scott! The dramatic Caroline Blakiston married to Lonely, it takes some believing. Xn4 17:08, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you so much for the barnstar. It brightens an otherwise rather gray day. One small request, though: in the interest of accuracy, would you mind if I edit it to use {{The Help Desk Barnstar}}, since I post on the Help desk rather than the Reference desk? No one will have to be the wiser. --Teratornis (talk) 17:45, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you Julia for your kind comment on my contributions (Paul Tournier). I sincerely appreciate your input. When I have more time I will come back to your page and explore. Jan Tik (talk) 09:53, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Observations on the thickness of two short planks

A ledge and battened door just has two (sometimes more) horizontal members to hold the vertical planks of timber together. A ledge and brace door has a diagonal plank which, via simple triangulation, ensures that the door does not sag. You can see them in any dingy castle in Europe.
BTW, if you ever poke your nose into my European neck of the woods - in between the Black Forest of Little Red Riding Hood and Count Dracula´s Transylvania - don´t forget to look me up in Vienna. I can give you the email address of my stepdaughter (who is a Sydneysider) and has been visiting a few times.
Unfortunately, a combination of mildly defunct parental Oz genes and the crypto-educational lunacy of a European neurotic forever diminished her aptitude to cope with the more boring and less absurd aspects of the humanoid thirst for bliss, happiness and burgeois brick-veneerdoom. --Cookatoo.ergo.ZooM (talk) 20:13, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Ooooops

Thank you for your correction of my error. I had a good (if somewhat embarrassed) giggle. There is no place like the Misplaced Pages to inform the rest of humankind of one´s utter and abject lack of any classical Hellenic education. --Cookatoo.ergo.ZooM (talk) 09:37, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Re: this edit. IMDB is not a reliable source for personal information, especially the trivia sections there (see here). Someone else just removed the phrase "of peasant stock", which is how I noticed it. -- Quiddity (talk) 19:55, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

crossposting about wagtails

The reasons for the behaviour are actually slightly unclear although a recent study suggests that it signals vigilance to potential predators. I have updated the article and linked to the study. As for the article not having it before, well, there are lots of birds and I assure you WP:BIRD is flat out trying to improve them! Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:39, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

(copy to here) Hi Sabine's Sunbird, not sure if I understand "crossposting", but I only posted once, and at the science desk. I appreciate that the bird project wikipedians would be busy – it's a bi-ig area to cover and I appreciate that you've taken trouble to add the wag and link. I went to the article to find something on it but had to ask when it wasn't there. I was puzzled because it's central to its descriptive name. Good to know you're onto it and thanks for making the difference, Julia Rossi (talk) 02:49, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I meant that I was crossposting. I posted it on ref desk but I also crossposted it here so you'd see it. Anyway, enjoy wagtails, because they are very cool and one day I'll get round to some substantive additions to their article (actually, White Wagtail is a contendor for next month's colab of the month). Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:51, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Pics of the day have to be featured pictures, this one isn't and isn't of sufficiently hight resolution to be featured (it's pretty, but getting a pic featured is hard work. I nominated a glorious photo of an antbird and they didn't really go for it. Sabine's Sunbird talk 04:33, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
For your tireless good cheer and amazing good sense on the refdesks, I award you this barnstar of kindness. You display the patience of a primary school teacher. You deal with the really banal questions on the refdesk that many editors choose to avoid with a barge pole. You leap in with a knight's lance and knock ignorance out of the way. You do so with a smile, and sometimes it gives other readers a smile too. BrainyBabe (talk) 07:27, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Still anorexic

ToC displays in a column down the left hand side about 10-15 characters wide. Then all blank space. Thought you would want to know. Feed a fever, starve a cold -- or vv? Feed a troll, and your diverted attention manifests in some other thinness. (??) BrainyBabe (talk) 05:14, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Julia, I wandered in whilst you were out(?) and read your gleanings from the Reference Desk. Really good, the danger of course might be that if too many people find out there will be deliberate intentions to be placed in your Hall of Humorous Fame. Have a good day

A little extra help

I didn't log on last night. Only to ask the question of how does one mature. But when someone replied to my question with links (mind you I asleep in my bed) "I" answered: *That's not going to help. I need to mature quick cause I need a girlfriend so I can stop asking stupid questions on the reference desk. So my question is, what do I do now? Since someone else logged in as me and made me sound like a jerk and a stupid person. I always appreciate your help by the way Julia. Thank you so much for your time and patients.

Thank You

Always

Question

Hello Julia Rossi, I noticed you revert vandalism occasionally. Would you like me to grant your account rollback rights to help you revert vandalism more easily? Acalamari 21:31, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Rollback granted. :) Out of curiosity, where was the place you saw that someone thought I was female? The only two recent places I can think of were Friday's talk page and my request for bureaucratship from over a month ago. Anyway, good luck with rollback: you'll be able to use it on the practice page now. :) Just remember it's only for vandalism-reversion. Best wishes. Acalamari 22:55, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
You're very welcome. :) I saw the post on Friday's talk page regarding the block of that imposter as well; in fact, I saw it when looking for the post I left there. :) Best wishes. Acalamari 23:09, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Mutual admiration society

You guessed right, I was feeling a bit under-appreciated, or more exactly, wondering if I was barking up the wrong tree. Thanks for the boost! BrainyBabe (talk) 06:53, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Not at all. I call it as I see it. As I came to one after the other, realised you were on a mission – truly worthwhile. Salut, Julia Rossi (talk) 06:59, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Your sense of quirk suits my sense of quirk! Must try the paper-over-patriarchy strategy sometime. BTW have you ever read the Bitch (magazine), billed as a "feminist response to pop culture"? And then there are the quirkyalones. BrainyBabe (talk) 06:38, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for answering my question so perfectly on the reference desk. I was worried I'd get a slew of answers misinterpreting my question to be asking what the term "evolution" means. It would seem illogical that somebody would do this, but I've certainly seen worse on the reference desk. Again, thank you. It's nice to know there are those of you out there less lazy than myself who are willing to answer my questions for me. BeefJeaunt (talk) 05:06, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

nicely collaborated

Now that you mention it, I do remember calling you a botany goddess (and it must have been why I was sure there had to be a botanist active on the RD to hear my request). But what did I do to deserve my appellation -- or have *I* forgotten that? —Steve Summit (talk) 00:49, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

It was when I discovered I was short (your kinder word: diminutive). In comparison, to me you are Sir Summit (tall)  : ) Julia Rossi (talk) 01:05, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
I just remembered, you were Sir because you were so nice/gallant about me being short and making me a goddess. ; ) Julia Rossi (talk) 01:14, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps I'm gallant too (so kind of you to say so), but what I may not have mentioned is that, for me, short/tall isn't a terribly useful distinction. Either everybody's short or nobody is, so I go with the latter. —Steve Summit (talk) 23:57, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Ditto. I still laugh about it though. Don't know what height you are, but "Sir Summit" just sounds cool if that's ok with you, Julia Rossi (talk) 00:16, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Are you familiar with The Police song Can't Stand Losing You?
I guess it's all true what your girlfriends say
That you don't ever want to see me again
And your brother's gonna kill me and he's six feet ten
I could have been that brother. :-) —Steve Summit (talk) 01:39, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Then I will tell you a story of the two tall ones that tried to cut me out of a discussion by literally talking nose-to-nose over my head (corporate types), so I climbed on a chair to level it out. Tall is an attitude, har. (You'll always be Sir Summit to me.) ; )) Julia Rossi (talk) 01:45, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Attitude. Hmm. I'll have to think about that.
If we should ever meet, we'll have to make sure there's a chair handy so we can see eye to eye! :-) —Steve Summit (talk) 14:42, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Steve! We already see eye to eye, no probs. : ) Julia Rossi (talk) 23:43, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Night Land

Hi Julia,

Sorry I haven't replied to you earlier. For one thing I haven't been reading much fiction lately. But the other day, someone lent me a very, very strange book called Night Land (qv), and it is hypnotic. Do you know it? When I finish it, can I write a critique of it for your group? Thanks for adding to some of my stuff on the Research Desk. It is always a real blast to see your name there. Myles325a (talk) 06:40, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Google search

Hi Julia, you may want to change the Google search URL on your userpage to this one, which only searches the English Misplaced Pages. At the moment it searches other language Wikipedias as well. Of course, that may have been what you wanted, in which case I apologise for butting in. Have a nice day, --Richardrj 09:38, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

hey

this is my first time trying to actually work wikipedia, so forgive me if i'm doing it wrong. i'm looking to find out how to pursue a year-long ayahuasca apprenticeship in south america (one that doesn't involve me paying $2000 a week to some "shaman" who drives a mercedes) - something authentic. i figure i'd contact you since you're the one who added the information on apprenticeships to the ayahuasca page? let me know (not sure where - do you just write back on my talk page? actually, send me an email: totallyjunglist@fastmail.fm)

AfD nomination of Florence Scovel Shinn

True Scotsman/DYK/AfD

Hi there, thanks for your support; I'm finished work on the article as far as I can tell, but I'm curious if there is anything more I should be doing now. I had thought of listing it on the Misplaced Pages:Scottish Wikipedians' notice board page as an article needing attention/improvement so some fresh eyes can attack it; good idea/bad idea?

Last question: the AfD tag was created at 2:20am or thereabouts on the 12th; so will the discussion be closed exactly 5 days/120 hours/7200 minutes/432'000 seconds after it started? Or should I relax a bit?

Finaly (yeah, I know I said 'last question' two questions ago, all men are liars), would you be so kind as to nominate True Scotsman for Did You Know if it survives AfD (Dear God... I'm anthropomorphising my article, I almost said 'He') as you suggested the other day? Thanks again for the support, JmackJmackaerospace (talk) 20:29, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Please do not remove maintenance templates from pages on Misplaced Pages, as you did to Florence Scovel Shinn, without resolving the problem that the template refers to, or giving a valid reason for the removal. Your removal of this template has been reverted. Thank you. The article contains exactly five citation -- two of which have been tagged as unreliable -- they are to biographical info given by fellow inspirational writers, not to serious biographical sources, and one is a bare mention of her by a third inspirational author. The Refimprove-template was thus valid. HrafnStalk 03:40, 18 May 2008 (UTC) <copied to Talk:Florence Scovel Shinn where shows reason given>

Keep up the good work, Julia. You may wish to add the recently-recovered articles on Malinda Cramer, Church of Divine Science, and International New Thought Alliance to your watchlist. Thanks, Madman (talk) 03:26, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Florence Scovel Shinn

Just went to the archives, before 1980 section. and searched on Florence Scovel Shinn. Yeah, I noticed that too, probably there's a space that got in somewhere in the talk page one when I cut and pasted it. This link should get the ones for FSS. A lot are pre 1922 public domain and free, hadn't realized that before. The obituary is a reasonable length 240 words or so.

Searching on "Florence Shinn" I also get this Four Hurt as Bus and Auto Crash. in 1930 P (not free). Searching Florence Shinn without quotes gets loads more, but many aren't for her. John Z (talk) 10:05, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
