Stealth helicopters are helicopters that incorporate stealth technology to avoid detection. In recent years, designs for blades have emerged that can significantly reduce the noise. A recent raid on the compound of Ossama Bin Laden utilized UH-60 Blackhawks, heavily modified for quieter operations and employing stealth technology to be less visible to radar.,
Types
While there are no officially operating helicopters that fit this description, there are a few that have been retired, rumored, or canceled:
- Hughes 500P (1972), nicknamed "The Quiet One" for work done to reduce the noise of its operation and used by the CIA during the Vietnam war to deploy a wiretap
- Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche (1996-2004), canceled
- A modified Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk, used in the operation that killed Osama bin Laden. The aircraft seemed to include features like special high-tech materials, harsh angles, and flat surfaces, previously found only on sophisticated stealth jets.
