GFDL

I've undone this edit to madam bot's exclude list. Sites now need to be licensed under CC-BY-SA (and optionally GFDL as well) and GFDL by itself is no longer enough. See Misplaced Pages:Licensing update#Content restrictions - I'm sure this has been documented somewhere better but as per usual tying to find it is difficult (Misplaced Pages's help/information system is atrocious and must be a nightmare for new users but that's a discussion for another day).

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please inform other users about these changes.

Recent software changes
(Not all changes will affect you.)
  • The Translate extension and Universal Language Selector were enabled on Wikimedia Commons on May 20. Commons users can now easily change languages, and translate pages with a friendly interface.
  • The Notifications feature, active on the English Misplaced Pages, now supports local blacklists and whitelists. It is possible to hide users (for example certain bots) from all notifications on the wiki. Also, e-mail notifications are now grouped.
  • The first stable release of MediaWiki 1.21 for sites outside Wikimedia was published on May 25.
  • The tool storing information about languages (CLDR) was updated to the latest version (23.1).
  • Due to a software issue, users couldn't enable or disable Gadgets. The issue is now fixed.
Future software changes
  • MediaWiki will stop supporting XHTML 1.0 and HTML versions lower than version 5. HTML5 will now be the default language for pages created by the software.
  • The software will check if all uploaded files are secure and match their type.
  • The Wikimedia Commons Android app will come out of the beta phase on its next release.
  • Account creation by manual log-in will now be recorded in the account creation log (bug 42434).
  • Links to file description pages will again be accessible directly from within videos (bug 43747).
  • The software behind recent changes patrolling was re-written; the change fixes issues related to patrolling new pages, among other things.
  • During a meeting, developers agreed on rules about making big changes to the software.
  • There is now a category to list pages with invalid music code.

Recent software changes
(Not all changes will affect you.)

  • The Tamil Misplaced Pages shared a Lua module they created to automate their Main Page.
  • There is now a test wiki to test new features in right-to-left languages.
  • The Thanks feature was added to the English Misplaced Pages; users can now thank others for individual edits.
  • The new interface for account creation and log-in is now the default on 30 wikis, including the English Misplaced Pages, Commons, Meta, and Wikidata. The feature will be added to all wikis after June 5. Users can return to the old look by adding ?useNew=0 to the web address.
  • Videos are now played in pop-up windows if their size on the page is smaller than 200 pixels (800 pixels on the English Misplaced Pages).
  • Opening your talk page now marks notifications as read, for wikis using the Notifications feature. (bug 47912) .
  • All autoconfirmed users can now reset transcoding of video files; previously only administrators could do this.

Geeta Guru-Murthy

Every morning I watch BBC World New with anchor Geeta Guru-Murthy. I tried to look up this news anchor who relays the news for one of the most reputable news sources in the world but found that someone had deleted her page. Since this appears to be you, I'm writing to demand that you correct this stupid mistake. And next time you decide to delete a page for lack of relevance, make sure it's really irrelevant.

What the hell makes you so special that you can judge the BBC News Anchor as unworthy of having a wiki page?

UTRS Account Request

I confirm that I have requested an account on the UTRS tool. Legoktm (talk)

This newsletter is now posted using MediaWiki message delivery.

New features

  • The CommonsMetadata feature was added to all wikis. It creates metadata information about multimedia files (like their license) that can be read automatically by computer programs. It not only works for Commons, but for all wikis, and you can use it for files on your wiki by editing templates used to describe metadata.
  • JavaScript code used on Wikimedia sites is now saved locally on your computer to load faster.

VisualEditor

  • You can now paste formatted content copied from external sources (not just as plain text) into VisualEditor; this includes copy/pasting from other VisualEditor windows.
  • You can now open VisualEditor by adding ?veaction=edit to the page URL, regardless of your user preferences.
  • Many bugs have been fixed, and VisualEditor should also look faster, for example when you save a page.

Problems

  • Due to issues, the new search tool ("CirrusSearch") was recently removed from wikis where it was enabled, then added again.

Future

  • MediaWiki 1.23wmf6 was added to test wikis on December 5. It will arrive to non-Misplaced Pages wikis on December 10 and all Misplaced Pages wikis on December 12 (calendar).
  • The old Etherpad tool (replaced by a new version) will be removed on December 30, 2013. You can still save old pads before that date using the old address: https://etherpad-old.wikimedia.org.

SP TR

Lego, nice page indeed. May I ask whether it's complete? Ed will be back online soon, and we want to publish at the latest on Wednesday US east coast time, this week in particular because of breaking news. Tony (talk) 10:25, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Tony1, it's pretty much done. Ed had suggested some improvements that I've mostly implemented. And thanks for the copyedit! Legoktm (talk) 19:00, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

special redirect

Hello - would you please re-create Big! (redirect)? The special redirect is there intentionally for tracking purposes. Thanks. Dohn joe (talk) 05:21, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

...tracking what? Legoktm (talk) 05:22, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
Tracking the number of people who visit certain pages from the disambiguation page. It's one way to get some idea of where people go after they land on a dab page. Dohn joe (talk) 05:27, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
Ummm, is there consensus for your analytics project? I'm not a huge fan of this idea, especially without any documentation. Legoktm (talk) 05:30, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
It's been done before, both by me (see Talk:Doctor Zhivago, for instance) and others (see here, for example). They're meant to be temporary. When I or someone else has a sufficient amount of data, they go away.... Dohn joe (talk) 05:54, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
I went ahead and re-created it, since continuity of results is important. Please don't delete again without letting me know. Thanks. Dohn joe (talk) 17:35, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
@Dohn joe: Please document this project of yours (or others) somewhere others can verify and understand (Is there an end date to this project? Was there or should there be consensus? Should they be removed at some point? Should all links become redirects on disambiguation pages or only some? Which and who decides?).
Make this documentation discoverable, perhaps group these redirects using a "R from .." template/category and link to said documentation from the category description page.
Different editors, especially experienced ones I imagine, will continue to remove these silly-looking redirects if there is no reasonable way to discover why it is (still) there. Sure we assume good faith and should keep innocent and unknown variations in syntax as-is if in doubt, but resolving redirects itself is generally good. Considering redirects are visible to users (through a "Redirected from .." header on the landing page), people will inevitably notice them (especially experienced editors might get itched) and question their usefulness if there is no way of knowing what they are for. Consider coming up with a way to hide them from the user, since they are only for tracking purposes (perhaps hide the the "Redirected from"-message for these kind of redirects by default, using site css?). Lastly, if you intend to create more in the future, a descriptive edit summary (with a link to the documentation) might be useful. Thanks! Krinkle (talk) 20:23, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
I appreciate all those comments, Krinkle. And frankly, I'd implement them all if I knew how. In particular - could you explain how to make them invisible via site css? That's beyond my know-how. I can probably figure out the category/template issue, but would also appreciate guidance there. Thanks. Dohn joe (talk) 20:32, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
I support the use of these, as with the Doctor Zhivago example; I would suggest a 90-day time limit, as that is usually the period of use that gets looked at in proposed page move discussions. Cheers! bd2412 T 21:19, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
