In the early beginning for more then 10 years they played only friendly matches with some local clubs.

In 1922 it was renamed in to FC Citizens Skopye and the club's major achievements were the 4 times champions of Macedonia in 1936,1937, 1938 and 1939. Between 1941 and 1947 it was renamed in to FC Macedonia Skopye.

FC Citizens Skopye was one of the most successful clubs to participate in the Royal League of Macedonia in the period between 1923 until the WWII and in 1927 became one of the founding members of the Macedonian Football League . The club changed its name again in 1941 in to FC Macedonia Skopye at beginning of the World War II. Most of the players of FC Citizens Skopye just as their coach Illes Spitz played for FC Macedonia Skopye. After the end of the war, in 1947, the club was merged with FK Pobeda (FC Victory) , and changed back his old name FK Vardar which will be the most successful club from Macedonia .One of the most notable players in this period was Kiril Simonovski Djina(Gena)and he played as a left defender for FC Citizens and FC Macedonia in the period 1938-1945 . After retiring, he became a notable coach having worked mostly with top league clubs in the Federation.The club was getting more organised during the time and in the second half of the 40s they become one of the top clubs in Macedonia.The team's traditional color was Red and then after the WW2 it was Blue.
Initially it competed within the ], one of the Subassociations of the ],<ref>Sijić, pag. 136</ref> until 1927 when became one of the founding members of the ] (SLP).<ref>Sijić, pag. 142</ref> The Subassociations were responsible for organising leagues, corresponding to the second or third Yugoslav tiers, depending on the exact period. After 1927 Gragjanski played mostly in the First Division of the SLP League having became SLP champion in 1936,<ref>Sijić, pag.99</ref> 1938<ref>Sijić, pag. 105</ref> and 1939.<ref>Sijić, pag.111</ref> After this last title, as the Yugoslav league system was being modified drastically, Gragjanski qualified directly to the ].<ref>Sijić, pag. 121</ref> This league, along with the ], were now the two leagues forming the Yugoslav Championship, and the winners of each one of them will dispute the Yugoslav Championship title. In 1937 it was adopted that the clubs playing in the top league (or leagues as in this case) will no longer play simultaneously in the Subassociation Leagues as well,<ref>Sijić, pag. 101</ref> so Gragjanski became completelly focused on the Serbian League, and it paid-off, as the club made an impressive season by finishing 5th in the league, only 3 points behind the second placed team, ].<ref>Sijić, pag. 121</ref>
Other notable players for Citizens were : Todor Atanaskov, Stojan Bogoev, Atanas Lukov, Blagoj Simeonov, Bogdan Vidov and Ljuben Janev.

Gragjanski was the only club from ] to compete in the Serbian League, and while SSK Skopje took the opportunity to take advantage in the SLP First Division to win titles and thus play in the qualifiers, it always failed to pass and join Gragjanski in the highest national League, thus indicating the difference in quality that existed at this time between Gragjanski and the rest of the clubs which competed only in the Skopje Subassociation (SLP).

However the exhibition from the season earlier was hard to repeat in the ] and Gragjanski finished 8th out of 10 clubs.<ref>, pag. 129 {{sr icon}}</ref> It came to be the last season before the beginning of the war.

The club ceased to exist in 1941 at beginning of the ] and the ]. Most of the region of the then ] was occupied by the ]n forces. Most of the players of Gragjanski just as their coach ] joined the ''FC Makedonija'', a newly formed club by the Bulgarian authorities by the merge of several previously existing clubs in Skopje: Gragjanski, ''SSK'' (Skopski sport klub), ''ŽSK'', ''Pobeda'' and ''Jug''.<ref> at Utrinski Vesnik {{mk icon}}</ref> The club competed in the ] between 1941 and 1944 having archived to finish second in 1942, by losing the final against ].
