The Russo-Ukrainian War is an ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, following Russia's Annexation of Crimea and the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine. The conflict has been described as a "hybrid war," and began when Russia invaded mainland Ukraine.
The existence of a Russo-Ukrainian War became fact with reports of Russia moving Russian artillery onto the territory of Ukraine, the Ukrainian capture of Russian soldiers in Donetsk Oblast, who Russia claimed had crossed over "by accident", reports of Russia shelling Ukrainian territory, and reports of Russian military forces entering Ukraine near Novoazovsk. On August 24, 2014, President Poroshenko of Ukraine referred to the conflict as Ukraine's "Patriotic War of 2014" and a war against "external aggression". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine labeled the conflict an invasion on August 27, 2014.
On August 27 two columns of Russian tanks have entered Ukrainian territory in support of the pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk and engaged Ukrainian border forces. NATO officials have stated that over 1000 Russian troops have invaded Ukraine, while the Russian government initially denied these claims. NATO has published satellite photos which showed the presence of Russian troops within Ukrainian territory. The pro-Russian separatists have admitted that Russian troops are fighting alongside them, stating that this was "no secret", but that the Russian troops were just soldiers who preferred to take their vacations fighting in Ukraine rather than "on the beach".
International response
- Latvia – Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said the Russian invasion of Ukraine must be considered by the UN Security Council as an "act of aggression," and that "this is war."
- Lithuania – "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania strongly condemns the obvious invasion of the territory of Ukraine by the armed forces of the Russian Federation."
- Ukraine – Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Oleksandr Turchynov said "It's a hybrid war that Russia has begun against Ukraine, a war with the participation of the Russian security services and the army."

The evidence suggests a new level of Russian involvement in the war, not merely funneling weapons and volunteers across the border to the pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine, but sending regular Russian ground forces on missions into Ukrainian territory.

And Russia is resorting to a hybrid war, with snap exercises, secret commandos and smuggled missiles.

Some have called the new approach "hybrid war," a conflict waged by commandos without insignia, armored columns slipping across the international border at night, volleys of misleading propaganda, floods of disinformation and sneaky invasions like the one into Crimea.

Russia reinforced what Western and Ukrainian officials described as a stealth invasion on Wednesday, sending armored troops across the border as it expanded the conflict to a new section of Ukrainian territory.
