Gyulistan also Vardut (Template:Lang-hy or Վարդուտ, Template:Lang-az) is a village in South Caucasus. According to the administrative-territorial division of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, it is in Shahumyan Region of NKR, according to the administrative-territorial division of Azerbaijan, it is in Goranboy District of it. Before 1991, the village was inhabited by Armenians. Currently, the village is located in close proximity to the contact line between Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army and army of Azerbaijan. Due to the fact that prior to Karabakh War, population of the village were Armenians, and at summer of 1992, during the Azerbaijani offencive, village came under control of the Azeris, the entire population of the village was either killed, or forced to leave it. Currently, due to the proximity to the frontline, the village is not inhabitable. 12 October 1813 after the Russo-Persian War in the village, the Treaty of Gulistan was signed between Russia and Persia (Iran). According to the agreement, Persia recognized Russian rule in Dagestan, Georgia, Abkhazia, East Armenia and present-day territory of Azerbaijan. Gyulistan Treaty also provided for repatriation of the Eastern Armenians, whom Shah Abbas I deported to Persia in 1706. Joining the large part of South Caucasus to Russia saved native peoples from endless invasions of Ottomans and Persians, led to the elimination of Feudal fragmentation, involved the region in progressive economic development associated with the other peoples of Russia. March 3, 1992 Azeris shot down Armenian transport helicopter Mi-26 carrying women and children onboard, 16 people were killed.
