Nick Miller, better known by his stage name Illenium (often stylized as ILLENIUM), is an American musician, DJ and producer.

Background

Nicholas D. Miller, (better known as Illenium), was born in San Francisco. He began making electronic dance music in early 2008 and quickly became known for his production quality and content. In the summer of 2012, after seeing Bassnectar perform a show at Red Rocks, he became passionate about working on his first release; where the DJ notes: "when I saw him, I got the Ableton the next day."

Music career

2013–2015: Career beginnings and early success

In 2013, Illenium made his official debut with the release of his self-titled EP. The EP was released through Los Angeles-based record label, Prep School Recordings.

After a year-long hiatus, on January 12, 2014, Illenium independently released his second EP, the "Risen EP" as a free download. The EP included a collaborative single with the DJ, Said the Sky titled, "Drop Our Hearts, Pt. 2" featuring the singer-songwriter Sirma. On June 25, the DJ released a remix of Lana Del Rey's song, "Flipside." Shortly after, on July 9, he released his second collaborative single with Said the Sky titled, "In Your Wake" featuring Jeza, via the record label Uplink Audio. On August 19, Illenium independently released the single, "So Wrong". On October 21, he released the single "Make Me Do" via Pantheon Records and The EDM Network as a free download. On the same day, he also released "The Phoenix", which was also released via Pantheon Records and The EDM Network.

Illenium commenced the following year, 2015, on January 30, by releasing a free download of his remix of the song, "All I Want" by Dawn Golden. One month later, in February, he dropped a remix of the song, "Mine" by Phoebe Ryan. Eventually, the remix gained over 2 million views on Mr. Suicide Sheep's Youtube channel. The DJ's next release was the single, "Falling In", in collaboration with Said The Sky and singer-songwriter, Mimi Page. The song was released as a free download on March 30. On May 7, he released a free download of his "dubstep" remix of the song, "Gold Dust" by Galantis. On May 17, he released "Spirals", the lead single from his upcoming debut studio album, "Ashes." The song featured the DJ, Sound Remedy, and the vocalist, King Deco. Illenium kicked off the month of July with his remix of the song, "Operate" by Kill Paris featuring the vocalist, Royal. The remix was released as a free download on July 1. On July 15, Illenium released "I'll Be Your Reason", the second single from his upcoming album, via NEST, the sister of Skrillex's record label, OWSLA. The track featured uncredited vocals from singer-songwriter, EDEN, and was premiered by Billboard days prior to the official release. On July 21, Illenium released an EP with Said The Sky and Cristina Soto titled, "Painted White." On August 27, he entered the official remix competition of Kaskade and Ilsey's single, "Disarm You." Released as a free download, the remix went on to gain over 5 million streams on Soundcloud. In November, the DJ released a remix of ODESZA's track, "Always This Late" as a free download. Soon after, on November 10, he remixed the song, "Infinity" by Niykee Heaton, and released the remix as a free download. On December 16, alongside the musical duo, Chilled Velvet, he released "Jester", the third single from his album, "Ashes." "Jester" was Chilled Velvet's debut single.

2016–present: Ashes

In 2016, Illenium launched a record label in tandem with Seeking Blue titled, Kasaya Recordings. On January 11, 2016, he released the song, "Afterlife" featuring Echos. The track was released as the fourth single from his imminent album, "Ashes." Following the release, on February 1, he released the album's fifth single, "Fortress" featuring Joni Fatora. On February 15, Illenium released his anticipated debut studio album, "Ashes" as a temporary free download via Illenium's record label, Kasaya Recordings and Mr. Suicide Sheep's label, Seeking Blue. After the release, the album peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart, and at number 19 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. Limited vinyl copies of the album were made available on March 25. Subsequently, Illenium embarked on a year-long tour titled, "The Ashes Tour," set to end on December 28. On May 6, the DJ dropped the song, "Bring Forth The Pressure" with Dirt Monkey via Pantheon Records, which is under exclusive license to Artist Intelligence Agency. The song was featured as a bonus track on Illenium's debut album. On October 10, Illenium released a collaborative single with the DJs, Said The Sky and Seven Lions titled, "Rush Over Me." The song was released via Kasaya Recordings and Seeking Blue, and featured "ethereal" vocals from the singer-songwriter, HALIENE. "Rush Over Me" is the first single by Illenium of 2016 to not be featured on his debut album, "Ashes."

Other ventures

In July 2016, Illenium collaborated with the company, Electric Family to launch a limited series of t-shirts and charity bracelets. This was announced through his Facebook account a few days prior though. Subsequently, all proceeds from the following collaboration were donated to the organization, charity: water.

Personal life

In 2013, Illenium moved to Denver, Colorado, where he currently resides. During an interview, Illenium stated that when he's not producing music, he spends a lot of time outdoors with his girlfriend and best friends; where the DJ noted: "I feel like that keeps me centered." He also stated that one of his favorite activities is going out to the movies.

Illenium cites ODESZA and Porter Robinson as some of his musical influences, while also considering Robinson a "dream collab."
