==Conspiracy teories==
== Newyorkbrad's RfA ==

I don't like the way of inputing more realistic point of view into 'conspiracy teories' - all more educated Americans already know the truth. Other people live not aware as they under the influence of propaganda. What we gonna do with this? On which side we are? All English wikipedia supports untruly facts as one checks another. This makes the official version very stable. Will we need to wait until the history will show the real true? But TRUE will not be thanksgiving to wikipedia. I know this mechanisms much better as I'm a Polish and I lived in such system of selfchecking many years. But finally truth won in Poland. I you can do it Americans - if we were able do it in the past - you also can. Peace my men!!!

:Thanks for catching that. It was done using the ] process. Basically, if someone puts a prod tag on an article and nobody objects (by removing the tag) within five days then it is deleted. I've removed the tag. It amazes me that someone would try to prod an article which is over a year old. OK, you know the drill. Odds are the person who put the prod tag on will come back and make an AfD nomination soon. We'd better get some references in the article soon to support its importance. I really wish people would do merge requests on articles like this rather than trying to kill them all the time. With a merge the content can be salvaged into a parent aricles, like the main ARES one, and broken back out if the content grows large enough. --] 19:44, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Your dismissive reference to me and wikilink was, IMHO, counterproductive. I feel like it only served to belittle me and hold me up to ridicule. I would politely ask that you retract that comment. If you would read the comments, the majority of those edits were working towards consensus, which is what the project is about.] (]) 19:01, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
:When you edit on no other topic for two months I consider it unhealthy. The degree of your reaction actually helps to make my case. When I look more than two months back in your edit history I see that you used to be involved in other topics. I'd recommend balancing your time on som e of those topics in addition to any editing you choose to do on Obama related articles. --] (]) 19:04, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
::: the degree of my reaction was not even proportionate to the purposely dismissive tone of your post to the ANI thread. If you want to discuss that, then I still request that you retract the comment, which has no place on a thread about Kossack and use my talk page. I was in Mexico for over a month and was unable to edit. Your characterization of my interest as unhealthy served what purpose? I don't think that what you have said reaches the level of a personal attack by Misplaced Pages's standards, but in the parlance of common plain speaking men, Sir, you attacked me. ] (]) 19:11, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

:Hi, JFBurton. I see a few things which are still needed. First, the article title should be bolded in the introduction. Next, you may want to add a company info box to describe the company. Finally, a corporate stub would be helpful. Above all of that, make sure you have something in the text which establishes notability. Otherwise, you are likely to see someone try to delete it. Take a look at ]. It is a short company article which has these elements. I could do it myself, but it would be better for you to have the practice. Please feel free to ask if you have any other questions. Good luck! --] 14:30, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

:::I don't have a problem with people who do more cleanup than article creation acitivities. It does bother me when somoeone doesn't put thought into those activities. It is easy to throw a bunch of prod and afd tags out there and move on. It takes effort to actually research the topics and decide of those tags are warranted. Hey. I'm sorry I didn't list the policies I was referring to (I honestly did think it was obvious), but here's a list: ].
== Hillary Rodham Clinton ==
You've probably noticed of those UBXs I've Mfded, I've done so to both pro and anti arguments. I have strong political opinions of my own; I'm not at all apolitical, but I'm all for removing them from Misplaced Pages.

I've not Mfded any which merely state membership of political parties, etc. Only provocative statements. I've got to say that I seriously doubt you can believe the userbox that says "homosexuality is immoral" or the one with a great big cross above the acronym LGBT is acceptable. I just can't comprehend that. Those two statements are, regardless of what you believe (I'm straight), vulgar and inherently provocative.
Hi Stuff - someone again changed Hillary Rodham Clinton to Hillary Clinton without consensus or further discussion. The editors who work on the page are in agreement that the name the page should have is Hillary Rodham Clinton - but move doesn't work nor does undo, at least not by us mortals. So ... could you once again help us out and change it back? Very much appreciate it. <strong>] </strong>|<small> ]</small> 06:38, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

I've got to hand it to you though, you've certainly been quick in responding to my Mfds, which is great; I'm all for discussion. --] (] - ]) 16:22, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
You got me with the "leave a message"... but I do have another question: do you think it might be wise to move-protect the page so this doesn't keep happening? Apparently the page was renamed and then there was another attempt to vandalize/move. I don't have any experience with move-protect, so thought I'd raise the issue. Thanks very much. <strong>] </strong>|<small> ]</small> 07:18, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

:After a quick look at your user page, it would seem we definitely agree on politics, but perhaps not userboxes :).--16:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
:Thanks - I hadn't seen the WP:RM entry when I posted here. HOw would we go about requesting move protect? <strong>] </strong>|<small> ]</small> 20:06, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
:"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." --] (]) 16:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
:Firstly, thank you. Secondly, I'd like to discuss this: "the outcome was to move any advocacy into user space '''where it becomes clear that it is not a Misplaced Pages item'''". This is an opinion, but I think it's (perhaps) important: I totally agree that no ones gonna look at a political userbox and say "hey, Jimmy Wales and Wikimedia support ''x'', and disagree with ''y''". But that really doesn't matter. If a user strongly disagrees with ''x'', it's hardly going to unify them and help their 'wikirelationship' (perhaps I'm being a little OTT here...) with the editor displaying that userbox. As ] ''your user space'' (or mine) actually isn't, it turns out, ''yours'' (or mine). --] (] - ]) 16:50, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

:::Actually - I don';t think we should ask for full protection - sprot seems to be working more or less - but I'd like to see the name protected which I htought was called move-protect. So before I go and make a fool of myself... is WP:RFPP the right place for move protection and keeping semi-protection intact? Full protection is too extreme and wouldn't fly. <strong>] </strong>|<small> ]</small> 20:19, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
::::Move protection is just another form of protection, I believe. ] should be the place to ask for this. --] 20:20, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

== MSU Interview ==

Dear StuffOfInterest,

My name is Jonathan Obar ], I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:
* Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
* Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
* All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
* All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
* The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name] instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --] <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">— Preceding ] comment added by ] (]) 20:12, 2 March 2012 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:Unsigned IP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

== An exciting month of wiki events! ==

<div style="background: #EFFDF5; padding:3em; font-family:'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif; font-size:110%;">
Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a ''very'' exciting month for Misplaced Pages in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual ''']''' will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever '''''' with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a ''']''' the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The ''']''' will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Misplaced Pages's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual ''']''' training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our ] with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

All the best,<br />]

== Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon ==

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.
'''When''': Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

'''Where''': The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

I'm sorry to trouble you, but I can see that you are an experienced Wikipedian, and I could use some help and advice on how to deal with a problem. I'm finding it difficult to contribute to Misplaced Pages because of one particular user, who tends to revert my edits, often with some insulting message seemingly designed to provoke an angry response. As such I seldom bother to do so.

You are also invited to our ''']''' on Thursday, December 18 at 7 PM.

== A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==

Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}.

A new user group, ], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at ]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available ] but very often a friendly custom message works best.

== Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) ==

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." We have ] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, ] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -] 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)</small>

== How we will see unregistered users ==

<section begin=content/>
Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin '''will still be able to access the IP'''. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on ] to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can ]. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can ] to ].

We have ] this identity could work. '''We would appreciate your feedback''' on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can ]. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you.

I'm currently placing online the works of Porphyry, so happened to come across ]]. The article was pretty terrible, so I edited it, added a whole bunch of data from the only ancient source, and a bunch of scholarly material from google books. I also removed various bits of invective directed at hagiography ("a tissue of falsehoods") and Christianity. I explained what I did on the Talk page.

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr"><div style="column-count:2;"> {{Misplaced Pages:Misplaced Pages Signpost/2023-12-24}} </div><!--Volume 19, Issue 24--> <div class="hlist" style="margin-top:10px; font-size:90%; padding-left:5px; font-family:Georgia, Palatino, Palatino Linotype, Times, Times New Roman, serif;"> * ''']''' * ] * ] * ] (]) 09:59, 24 December 2023 (UTC) <!-- Sent via script (]) --></div></div>
Today I find that they are all back, and a rather insulting message on the Talk page by someone called Wetman. I have encountered this person before in the religion articles and he seems to be rather a bully, never contributing data, always editing to introduce his own (Christophobic) opinion and picking fights with people like myself who don't know how to work the Misplaced Pages system. As far as I can tell this sort of thing is contrary to how Misplaced Pages should work; but it is by no means obvious to me how to resist this treatment.

I note from your page that you are an atheist, and this is one reason why I approached you; so that no confessional issue arises. I don't want bias in this article, but just the raw facts, expressed without fear or favour. Saint's lives (as far as I know) are often very historically suspect, and hagiography frankly makes me wince. But I don't see the point in studding a page on a saint's life with pejorative statements about hagiography.

- sure & thanks for looking into this. The lead article on phpmyadmin includes a section refering to a few software applications serving related purposes. I had taken the liberty of adding a link in that section pointing at a new application (http://mydbaccess.net) which you opted to take out.

:*It read like an advertsisement rather than encylcopedia content ("If you are looking for...").

Hey, stuffofnightmares
You folks are deliberately falsifying, lying, distorting… the facts. Why don't you give me a single valid argument on talk page? Vandals! What sort of irrationality is this? Lunacy, mockery, indecency? Pick one… or just lock me for another week… and say I've asked for it… ] 11:26, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
:You know I've once spend a whole month on that talk page over there, all for itsy bitsy contribution to that "War on Crap" section, that edit was more than valid, and to spend a whole month on chitchat while we have clear references and undisputable facts is pure waste, entropy for sure. There was a long discussion about that particular sentence, I've repeatedly stated that "you" folks can fix it in any way you wish, as long as it is in peace with the cited source, what to heck are you expecting? What is this project all about? That said, apologies for such "rapid fire reply", but it's not cool when you just parachute in, like you did there, out of the blue… so to say. Conspiracy teories

Unhealthy interest

Your dismissive reference to me and wikilink was, IMHO, counterproductive. I feel like it only served to belittle me and hold me up to ridicule. I would politely ask that you retract that comment. If you would read the comments, the majority of those edits were working towards consensus, which is what the project is about.Die4Dixie (talk) 19:01, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

When you edit on no other topic for two months I consider it unhealthy. The degree of your reaction actually helps to make my case. When I look more than two months back in your edit history I see that you used to be involved in other topics. I'd recommend balancing your time on som e of those topics in addition to any editing you choose to do on Obama related articles. --StuffOfInterest (talk) 19:04, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
the degree of my reaction was not even proportionate to the purposely dismissive tone of your post to the ANI thread. Political userboxes

Hey. I'm sorry I didn't list the policies I was referring to (I honestly did think it was obvious), but here's a list: User:Jatkins/Political UBXs.

I've got to hand it to you though, you've certainly been quick in responding to my Mfds, which is great; I'm all for discussion. --Josh Atkins 16:22, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

After a quick look at your user page, it would seem we definitely agree on politics, but perhaps not userboxes :).--16:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." --StuffOfInterest (talk) 16:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Firstly, thank you. Secondly, I'd like to discuss this: "the outcome was to move any advocacy into user space where it becomes clear that it is not a Misplaced Pages item". This is an opinion, but I think it's (perhaps) important: I totally agree that no ones gonna look at a political userbox and say "hey, Jimmy Wales and Wikimedia support x, and disagree with y". But that really doesn't matter. If a user strongly disagrees with x, it's hardly going to unify them and help their 'wikirelationship' (perhaps I'm being a little OTT here...) with the editor displaying that userbox. As Misplaced Pages policy states your user space (or mine) actually isn't, it turns out, yours (or mine). --Josh Atkins 16:50, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Second opinion

Hi. I just created a redir for Merlin 1D. I was thinking of making it a redir to the Merlin 1D section of the Merlin article but, in the end, decided to match the existing redirs for the Merlin 1B and Merlin 1C and just point to the entire article. I would appreciate a second opinion on this. If you think these redirs would be better pointing to the section rather than the article, I would support that. Cheers. N2e (talk) 13:55, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

I'd point the redirect (actually, all three redirects) at the appropriate section. Might as well get people as close to the information they want as possible. --StuffOfInterest (talk) 15:21, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear StuffOfInterest,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review).

If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.115.210 (talk) 20:12, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:WMATA Rendering Tysons West.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:WMATA Rendering Tysons West.gif. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Misplaced Pages is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 00:38, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Misplaced Pages in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Misplaced Pages's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

All the best,
James Hare

Come one and come all. To a presentation at the Laurel Historical Society about how you can help verify, validate, and edit the information that is on the front line of local history.

Picture your self leading the masses to improve Wikimedia one article at a time.
  • Show the Internet who is the better editor.
  • Be the creator of culture that you know you are.
  • Spread the knowledge of noteworthy people who no one but you cares about.
  • Lead the charge to a better Misplaced Pages --- eventually.

See you at the Laurel Pool Room, 9th and Main Street, Laurel, MD on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7:00 PM EST. See http://www.meetup.com/Wikimedia-DC/events/205494212/ for more information. Geraldshields11 (talk) 02:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, StuffOfInterest. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi StuffOfInterest.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM.

User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, StuffOfInterest. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 special circular

Icon of a white exclamation mark within a black triangle
Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:27, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:07, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Trying to get WikiProject Amateur Radio back on the air!

Hi, I'm Dr vulpes and I'm currently doing my best to resurrect the amateur radio WikiProject. A lot of the articles need some serious work and so I'm trying to organize an article improvement drive in October. If you're interested check out the link to the drive and the project page. Right now everything is in the planning stages, trying to find people interested, articles to focus on, etc. So if you know anyone who would like to help out feel free to invite them! If you no longer interested in this project that's a-ok just remove yourself from the list on the project page and I'll never badger you again. 73! Dr vulpes 00:04, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
