Hello Versageek! Yesterday I’ve added galleries at the page named ]. They have the purposes to make readers better understand the periods. The edits I make on this page as constructive as possible. The deletion of them is very nonsense. Please let me add small galleries of four pictures at every section of this page. This isn’t a type of vandalism.

Hi Versageek,

I am new to editing Misplaced Pages and I was hoping to add useful information about insects to pages. I make educational YouTube videos about insects. I do not want to run into a problem with "conflict of interest" policies, but I also think that these videos would add beneficial information to the pages. Somewhere it mentioned, bringing it up in a "Talk" and letting other editors decide if it was a valuable addition. Where would I do that? I tried to just place a couple up and your bot knocked them down and I just don't want to step on any toes as I did not know that links were discouraged. Also, would it be more okay to just add written information to the body and then add the link at the bottom as a reference?

Thank you,

== checkuser check ==

Someone brought up on Wolfdog's wikipedia talk page that he rarely does edit summaries. On many occasions he will delete lots of text and never put up a summary of his edits. he has been doing this for a long time. 57.9 percent of his edits do not have summaries. I was wondering if you could checkuser this user and see if he's deliberately going around and doing things he shouldn't be doing on wiki page articles? Since he does this so often and so frequently, I think it should be looked into. This would be unfair to all the other users that contribute to wikipedia that spend alot of time trying to make contributions just to have someone go around very often and delete things without summaries. If a user is going around and deleting large amount of text without a reason, I would figure that would be vandalism. And many vandals like to go around doing that under numerous accounts. And account that has nearly a 60 percent rate of deleting things without a summary, is in my view a problem. Thank you. ] (]) 21:20, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
:I think you misunderstand the function of the checkuser tool. It detects if multiple users are sharing the same IP address. It wouldn't be of any help here. The best solution in this case would be to ask the user to please use edit summaries. It appears that someone has recently requested that on his talk page. --]] 23:41, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
::Thanks for replying. I'm not 100 percent on the rules here so sorry if I'm wrong. Since this user goes around deleting a lot of text all the time from various articles, I was wondering since many vandals do this, if he could also be going under other names and doing something similar? Sometimes people spend weeks/months of research to add to articles. I think it's vandalism if you just go around and delete and snip stuff here and there. Obviously pages evolve all the time, and that's a good thing. But going around and randomly deleting things with no explanation to me is vanadalism. The near 60 percent rate is what worried me. This leads to suspicion. I don't know for sure if they're going under multiple aliases. I figured a quick checkuser would be able to find out if they did or not. And if they didn't, I'd have no problem apologizing for being wrong. I'd apologize to them personally on the talk page if that ended up being the case. ] (]) 00:25, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

== A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==

Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}.

A new user group, ], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at ]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available ] but very often a friendly custom message works best.

== Irish coin blog articles ==

Hi,

I did not intend to spam.

My blog is intended as a useful guide / source of additional info for Irish coin collectors. It is much acclaimed within the coin collecting community - especially to those new to the hobby since I try to explain the history, politics and economics behind the coin issues. I also explain technical wordings and phrases.

It also contains much more info than some of your articles, e.g. St Patrick's Halfpennies / Farthings.

Please re-consider your undo's.

Best regards,
James O'Brien <!-- Template:Unsigned --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding ] comment added by ] (] • ]) 06:45, 10 January 2018 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

:The general rule is that you should not be adding links to your own website. I did look at the site & it does look like it can be useful as a resource, however you should suggest the addition on the article(s) talk page rather than add it yourself. Also, you are consistently breaking page formatting with the way you are inserting the links. --]] 20:41, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Versageek, I'm writing you here because I've seen this is the main wiki where you edit and because here you're an abusefilter, checkuser and sysop.
I think I've found a few proxies used recently by a single user who hides behind them to make similar unconstructive edits in different pages, and a few socks used to do the same kind of edits created recently.
If I write here the suspicious proxies IP ranges, will you be able to block them (]) and do the same with the socks created over such ranges (])?
Let me know, please, I'd like to be helpful to the project by reporting vandals in bad faith who use proxies and socks such as this one!

Hi Versageek, I noticed you had commented on the investigation with respect to my id being suspected of being a sock puppet. I also saw a statement in my investigation from you that said it is 'possible' that I am a sock puppet. I just wished to find out the reasons you said that. Also, I noticed that against 'possible', a line was written - "same ISP than some previous sockpuppets" I wanted to know whether this is true or not; that my ISP is the same as some previous sockpuppets, and whether that would be enough reason to term this case as a possible case of sock puppetry. I wanted to request you to guide me to the right forum to find out the reasons, if this is not the correct place. Thanks, ] (]) 09:42, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

:You do indeed share an ISP with the Mrinal Pandey sock farms. Lots of people share ISPs, so I don't consider it enough to say with certainty that you are another sock of that user. You have deleted my article. This is about a self-claimed prophet. I myself does not agree 100% with his claim however, in term of whether there is a claim or not, it a fact. I have linked it to his website. Obviously, there is not much published in notable press about this but that is true for any religious leader, when they start up their campaigns. His significance is because of his claim only. He claims to be the promised one, who shall bring all faiths - whole population of the world - to one faith only. Ahmadiyya faith believes that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was the Promised Messiah (second coming of Jesus) and this person claims that he is the Promised Son as prophesied by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad.

Hi,

Hello,
My name is Tamara and I am personal assistant to Ms. Fuentes. Together her and I have revised her Misplaced Pages but unfortunatley it keeps being reverted back to the original by you. If posslibe can you repsect her wishes to leave up her version of wikipedia. If you have any questons please email me at <redacted>.

My name is Tijana and I am a team leader of Wikinvesting.com project. Along with five of my colleagues and friends who are investment and trading enthusiasts, I have started the Wikinvesting which is based on MediaWiki platform.
Thank You,

Wikinvesting is a non-profit, game-changing movement which aims to round up all those individuals who believe that unbiased financial market information and knowledge should be extensively available to everyone. And this is also how I got to you :) Namely, I was searching for information I needed on financial markets and I have noticed that there isn’t a lot of "useful" information available on Misplaced Pages (to my surprise). In addition to that, the information available through sites such as Investopedia or Investing is tightly controlled by the business owners and hence easily manipulated. Simply, traders like me could not trust such sources in planning the investment and trading strategy...
Tamara
21:15, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

So, what we want to create is a base where active or aspiring traders, content writers, investors, and generally financial enthusiasts will share their knowledge and experience, discuss investment opportunities, analyze news etc., all for the purpose of wikinvesting becoming the biggest financial knowledge “open source” base. I am not sure if you are familiar with the recent case of GameStop where gaming enthusiasts gather around the GameStop via reddit forum and prevented the hedge funds from sinking it down. They were basically our inspiration to starting this project.

::Thanks. The parked and PPCed section of .com/net/org is quite significant but a lot of it is now turning towards development as PPC revenues have fallen over the last year. Hi. A simple web search will establish that Prof. William Lorenz does indeed exist and is the originator of the concept "domaineering" as more or less synonymous with "domain advertising". :Michael, I am going to add to that: Removal of the tags, although in good faith, was certainly not appropriate, and the insertion of the youtube links is also questionable, see ], which discourages rich media. The bot indeed reverts all edits by an editor, as past research has shown that reverting only a last edit often leaves broken pages behind, while reverting all of the editor and notifying him, ''friendly''(!), that he has been reverted and that he can undo the bot edit while reconsidering, is really, by far, a better method than only reverting one edit. That has been discussed over and over.
:As Versageek says, youtube and tripod links are often inappropriate, and especially when added by editors who are not familiar with our policies and guidelines, which is generally true for IPs and new users. You are right in saying that it does make mistake, but so do all of our anti-vandalism bots (or I could even say, all of our bots), and when I looked into some frequently reverted domains (like myspace), its error rate is pretty low. Moreover, the bot is programmed to be extremely friendly, and many people find it more helpful than damaging. I think your block is needlessly harsh. --] ] ] 20:04, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I 've created and edit the page for author C.M. James removing anything that would seem as advertisement or promotion. The goal is not to advertise but to link actual author websites AND links from other sources. Reading over the article I thought everything was strictly information and not bias to the author. If there was a statement made about credentials or awards it was cited in the article. If anything else was placed incorrectly is it possible to know exactly what? Because reading through it I can't seem to find anything that is promotional. Relevant to the subject maybe. If a claim was made then there were links to show that the statement can be verified, but wasn't use to promote. A story and time line is being explained to show when and how c.m. james became a writer which includes correct information, cites, and a timeline. There are accomplishments made by the author which led c.m. james to focus on his passion which is writing. And I thought those needed to be cited. First, how were my statements in the DRV or AfD disrupt anything? (Please reformat or change the title in any way you'd prefer)

] from the past month (June 2024).
Thank you for your reply, and thank you for agreeing that a message to me would have been the better way to go. You may have seen that I'm discussing this on Lar's talk page as well. My biggest remaining disagreement with you is on whether I was disruptive, and it's one of my biggest concerns with Lar's position. You write:

]
:''I felt the nature of your comments certainly represented wiki-lawyering and in some cases the tone bordered on trolling.''

] '''Administrator changes'''
By that you can't mean Wikilawyering is a blockable offense. Please don't tell me this is the first block for wikilawyering on Misplaced Pages. I could say more about how I don't wikilawyer, but I can't believe that you blocked for that reason, so let's drop it. ''the tone bordered on trolling'' I've always thought "trolling" had more to do with not caring about the outcome and just saying things to hurt others (possibly for amusement). I try to have a little humor in my arguments, but I try not to hurt others with it. It seems to me that the only behavioral element that WP:SOCK policy mentions that would justify a block is being disruptive: ''"Good hand, bad hand" accounts: Keeping one account "clean" while using another to engage in disruption.'' -- from the Oct. 28 version, the day you blocked; it's also worth noting the top line of that section : ''Editors must not use alternate accounts to mislead, deceive, '''disrupt''', or undermine consensus. This includes, but is not limited to:'') Do you agree that my behavior on those discussion pages had to be disruptive in order to trigger a WP:SOCK violation? Except if it was a WP:CLEANSTART account, which, in itself, would have been no violation. If CLEANSTART is going to exist, that kind of edit history, by itself, shouldn't be a problem. I realized that my taking a prominent role in those kinds of discussions would raise eyebrows, but I always expected that I'd simply get a message from a checkuser if I did something wrong. ::But it isn't humble. You blocked for it. Not only without a basis in policy, but for a reason that is against policy. I think the communication between you and Lar should be reviewed by some trusted third party who can say that nothing very improper was part of it, and I'd want ArbCom to say that what I did is not disruptive. A Note About Advertising and Conflicts of Interest

If I reverted your link addition or removed your links from an article, please read this:

Due to the rising profile of Misplaced Pages and the amount of extra traffic it can bring a site, there is a great temptation to use Misplaced Pages to advertise or promote sites. This includes both commercial and non-commercial sites. You should avoid linking to a website that you own, maintain or represent, even if the guidelines otherwise imply that it should be linked. If the link is to a relevant and informative site that should otherwise be included, please consider mentioning it on the talk page and let neutral and independent Misplaced Pages editors decide whether to add it. This is in line with the conflict of interest guidelines. Main pages: Misplaced Pages:Conflict of interest and Misplaced Pages:Spam

If you have additional information to add to the article, why not simply add it rather than having an external link?

Small galleries at furniture

Hello Versageek! Yesterday I’ve added galleries at the page named furniture. They have the purposes to make readers better understand the periods. The edits I make on this page as constructive as possible. The deletion of them is very nonsense. Please let me add small galleries of four pictures at every section of this page. This isn’t a type of vandalism.

External Links

Thank you, Insectopia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Insectopia 2015 (talkcontribs) 20:26, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

The page is Pedro Fernández. I had updated It with recent discography, updated, working links to his official page, his Twitter and Facebook pages. Updated the TV section with his 2015 and 2016 shows. Updated the opening with his Grammy awards. Updated the movie section by adding missing roles. Then your bot comes along and wipes it all out. If you can't capture updated data then leave it alone if you see it has been manually updated. That was qiute a bit of effort you wiped out! Misplaced Pages isn't a directory or link farm, also please see other stuff exists. I'm guessing from your username that you have some relation to the site you are adding. Adding links in this manner is discouraged and could cause the site to be blacklisted --Versageek 20:46, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

You can't put in blacklist a site the have information that matter to people.

I added the articles with information according to the content and what people are looking for.

So...I would like you to explain what do you don't like about the information? What type of information is ok for those pages??

thanks for your time.

regards,

Andrew — Preceding unsigned comment added by AndrewBOS (talkcontribs) 05:10, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

We can and do blacklist sites if they are repeatedly added to articles by users with an apparent conflict of interest. Thus far, you haven't repeatedly added links to the site. The content on the site you want to link to adds nothing to the article that isn't already available, either on the page or in one of the existing references. If you want to add the link to that page, I suggest asking for consensus on the article talk page. --Versageek 16:22, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

checkuser check

Thank you. Juliep94 (talk) 21:20, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

I think you misunderstand the function of the checkuser tool. It detects if multiple users are sharing the same IP address. It wouldn't be of any help here. The best solution in this case would be to ask the user to please use edit summaries. It appears that someone has recently requested that on his talk page. --Versageek 23:41, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for replying. Juliep94 (talk) 00:25, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Versageek. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Versageek.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM.

User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Versageek. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

I assume you are talking about the changes you (and your IP) made to Psychiatry. In medical articles we generally use the mainstream consensus. If you wish to change that consensus, you need to discuss it on the talk page first. We have an entire article about controversies in Psychiatry, which includes mention of the material you are trying to add to the main article. --Versageek 19:29, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Question

Hello, I'm new to editing at Misplaced Pages, but your bot undid the edits I made to the Powers, Oregon page and I have been unable to determine why. I apologize if this is obvious, but I have been unable to find an answer online. Thank you.

Lunaseay (talk) 19:13, 13 January 2017 (UTC)Lunaseay

The bot reverted you because you added a wordpress.com link. If you omit that link, your changes won't be reverted. Also, we don't use inline links in articles like you did here : '''''' . --Versageek 19:35, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Slavic speakers of Hellenic Macedonia also call their language "our own (language)" according to statements by the Slavic speakers themselves: . However, your bot removed this legitimate content and the citation, discriminating against it solely on my status as a new user and the domain name where the statement appears: . Re: Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Misplaced Pages...

Hello,

Thank you for your message. However I just would like to clarify.

1. I know that this links are no follow and I'm NOT looking here for promotion/alter my page search engine ranking. I just wanted to contribute to "Misplaced Pages". 2. Previously I added links and they were approved but today you deleted them - no problem. I can see that I'm not very welcome here... 3. In my opinion you should do something here in order that people can understand easily if their links are inappropriate. 4. Just example here: https://en.wikipedia.org/Dynamic_Tension - There is a external link cleary promoting the page: http://www.dynamictension.com/. Why is approved? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tomasz71 (talkcontribs) 13:50, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

@Tomasz71: It's not 'approved'. Maybe it got missed, or maybe it once pointed to a different page. You could have clicked 'edit' and remove it; I just did. The existence of other inappropriate links is not a good argument for adding more. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 00:22, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to beta-test IABot

Hello Versageek! I would like to invite you to help beta test the interface for InternetArchiveBot. IABot is a bot designed to help mitigate link rot on Misplaced Pages. Users can control the bot by using a Management Interface that was designed to be integrated with and similar to Misplaced Pages (For example, only autoconfirmed users can run the bot; on-wiki administrators have admin access on the tool; user permissions on the tool are flag based; logs are kept; etc.)

If you'd like to help out, feel free to give the interface a go to check for bugs/anomalies/other weird things and send your feedback to Cyberpower678, the bot operator. Again, the interface is at http://tools.wmflabs.org/iabot/ (If it's down for maintenance right now, it'll be back up shortly). If you are not interested, feel free to ignore this message. Hello. I came across this article doing New Pages Review patrol and noticed on the talk page that you deleted this on 14 October 2016. I am considering taking it to AfD for not meeting notability criteria. I was wondering if you want to have a look and see if it should be speedy deleted (if that is what you did before). That might be difficult because it is an established article and may not fit the speedy criteria. I'll let you decide on that. ---Steve Quinn (talk) 04:11, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

Irish coin blog articles

The general rule is that you should not be adding links to your own website. I did look at the site & it does look like it can be useful as a resource, however you should suggest the addition on the article(s) talk page rather than add it yourself. Also, you are consistently breaking page formatting with the way you are inserting the links. --Versageek 20:41, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

If I write here the suspicious proxies IP ranges, will you be able to block them (as they're forbidden on Misplaced Pages) and do the same with the socks created over such ranges (as they weren't created for reasons according to community standards)? Let me know, please, I'd like to be helpful to the project by reporting vandals in bad faith who use proxies and socks such as this one! Enowtenorez (talk) 08:11, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello Versageek,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 22:55, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well V. MarnetteD|Talk 20:45, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

As part of a Starter kit project for smaller wikis, there is a work-in-progress guide around Bots & Tools here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit/Bots_and_Tools. I'm reaching out with a few questions, as there is a mention of the "XLinkBot" on this page in the list of useful bots section:

  • Is it okay to have the bot listed in that section? Are there any concerns?
  • Would you be okay with folks from smaller wikis reaching out to you for help, and would you be willing to list your preferred method of contact under "Bot owner contact"?
  • Is there anything like a note or reminder related to the bot that you would like to add in the "description" column?

Additionally, if you have a suggestion for any other bots or tools currently on the list which should not be there and those that are not there and should be there, I would love to know about them—looking forward to your input! Srishti (talk) 08:03, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

I do understand you should monitor whats on Misplaced Pages but you make it so inaccessible to 'normal' people that it really discourages me from further editing.

I would love to share more information about this project with you and also discuss future potential opportunities, hence if you are interested, please let me know so we can continue this on our slack channel.

Cheers,

XLinkBot and Michael Nesmith

Just to understand: why did XLinkBot remove the Youtube link posted in Michael Nesmith on September 21? Are Youtube links not allowed at all? Or are Youtube links just not considered reliable sources for the body of an article? It's actually an interesting and relevant Youtube video (and apparently stable); would it be acceptable to place it in External Links? (I didn't create the link, but I do have the article on my watchlist).Finney1234 (talk) 10:12, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

I wish to create a page regarding the Hanafi Jurist Abul Husayn Al Quduri. I have been referred to yo as you previously deleted a page called al quduri, does the page of the person ive cited meet the criteria needed to be created. Thanks

I have not posted any content that was protected by a copyright

All the changes I made to this wiki were links to media Lance Sterling owns, they should not have been deleted. I would like to know why our links to our own host websites were deleted. Please post the changes I made.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Assistance request

Hello, I'm addressing a tracked syntax error on Misplaced Pages, and I wondered if you would be willing to assist me for the some of the last few in User space. The error I'm correcting is called the Tidy Font, and due to changes with MediaWiki in 2018, any link written in the format of <font color></font> with the color stated outside the link does not display the intended colors and instead defaults to standard blue for most browsers. If you would be willing, would you change on your page User:Versageek/Talk/Archive/2 the following?

Would you? Headtothestripe (talk) 02:58, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, appreciative. I am talking to a group (three to six editors, apparently) on the Abi Carter talk page. They are trying to remove parts of the article. I have tried to tell them they need consensus.Headtothestripe (talk) 22:27, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Versageek, please visit Abi Carter and the talk page, as well as some editors' talk pages. (See this) There is some serious ownership behavior and edit warring going on. A number of experienced editors are making no headway in convincing Headtothestripe that once an article "goes public", the creator no longer owns it. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 23:14, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

The immediate problems have been solved with a one-week block of Headtothestripe. That will likely not change their attitude, so I expect problems when they return. If that happens, a topic ban might be the best solution. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 13:31, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Am I needing to only write actual author information nothing really else? Dmcneely25 (talk) 21:13, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:07, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
