:Please use ] as an alternate venue for cases of simple vandalism that require an immediate block and ] for cases that require further investigation.
This page helps responsible users prevent and respond to ]. List new vandals by IP or username. ''' ''Please'' add new alerts at the top of the "Current alerts" list.'''
== |
==Old instructions for this page==
<small> | |||
Choose one of three sections to make a report: ], ], or ]. Follow the recommended format for each section including the heading markup. Place the request at the top of the ''New requests'' subsection or the top of the watchlist. Provide page diffs from edit histories if appropriate and links to specific problem pages.
</small> | |||
==History== | |||
If you want to alert '''everyone''', leave the ] option unchecked. Be careful: this is the default. If the listing doesn't require an immediate response, please be sure to check the "minor edit" option.
The first page used for tracking vandalism was a user subpage, ], some time before 4 November 2001. The vandalism in progress page was established as VANDALISM IN PROGRESS - the title was upper-case to make it easily distinguishable on ]). Around the same time, the Misplaced Pages Militia (since renamed to the ]) was formed to coordinate responses to press releases about Misplaced Pages. The "VANDALISM IN PROGRESS" page was moved to the Misplaced Pages namespace in August 2002 and was renamed to the current title in 2006. Its archives since 2003 may be found in ] and the talk archives since august 2002 can be found in the history of ] and in text form as subpages of ]. Old subpages can also be found through ]. the ] page also grew out of "vandalism in progress". A section on the "vandalism in progress" page for persistent vandalism was added in ], later ], and then re-created as ] in September 2004; in December 2004 it was ] to ], titled ].
==Format== | |||
Use the format under the Current Alerts heading: IP address, pages touched, damage done. For a comprehensive guide for dealing with different types of vandalism, see ].

== Adding someone to this page ==
When you notice what you think is an act of vandalism, note the vandal's IP number or handle. Edit this page, adding the person's IP number, and ] your edit with four tildes (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>) to give the date and time.
'''Then put the person's IP or handle in the ]''' and hit save.
Vandalism appears on ], along with the id of the alleged vandal, and other wikipedians can decide whether damage has actually occurred. If there is consensus that an attack was correctly identified, everyone will help repair the damage. When the attack is finished, come back and remove the information you added.
If no attack occurred (e.g. it was just a difference of opinion about what is appropriate content or style, not intentional defacement), then the line will be removed from the vandalism in progress page. We hope cases of mistaken listing will be rare.
Please only use this page for genuine '''malicious vandalism''', and only for a '''sustained attack'''. If you make any changes to this page for other reasons, put something like "Not calling a vandalism alert" in the ], or mark it as a ].
==Cautions and '''alternatives'''==
However, please '''do not''' label isolated instances of text deletions, replacements or odd additions as VANDALISM unless they seem intentionally overly lewd or offensive. More often than not, this is just a visitor to the site experimenting (also see ]) -- labeling them as a VANDAL is a good way to ]. Only add alerts to this page of true VANDALISM such as a systematic attack on several ]. If you suspect an edit ''may'' be vandalism but are unsure, don't hesitate to list the edit on ] where it can be scrutinised by other editors. Above all, ] at first and give the person the benefit of the doubt until they prove they deserve otherwise.
If you need help or think someone else does, please leave a note at ].
''Note that deliberate '''vandalism of this page''' is likely to lead to you being blocked from editing Misplaced Pages.''
If you ''disagree'' with someone's edits, see the following pages instead:

The vandalism will occur from anonymous proxies at 213.157.209.*, 213.157.202.* and 213.157.194.*. This is the former ] ( / ]), who has resigned his account ahead of an ] and embarked on a series of daily . His motives are unclear, but appear to be a combination of imposing nationalist POVs and preventing anyone else from editing the articles. Users and sysops are requested to watch the pages in question and take action as necessary. Blocking individual IP addresses will be ineffective, as he is using multiple proxies across his ISP's three /24s. -- ] 19:16, 12 May 2004 (UTC)
*Indeed, this happened. And beyond that, it went for hours before anyone got to it. Which is just depressing. I mean, come on. We had prior warning that this was going to happen, and we... didn't fix it. Yay. Can the AC at least get together and rehear this? Please? ] 02:20, 13 May 2004 (UTC)
** I see that RickK has blocked 213.157.209.0/24 until 20 May to choke off the vandalism from that /24 at least. Levzur will probably return tonight from one of his ISP's other /24s. But I agree, the AC really needs to get on with this - it's been going on for far too long and it isn't exactly a complex issue to deal with. If those /24s need to be blocked it's better for the AC to approve this in advance, rather than sysops having to impose blocks as they go along. -- ] 07:33, 13 May 2004 (UTC)
Today's attack from Levzur is now underway. -- ] 21:53, 13 May 2004 (UTC)
* I'm disappointed to see that some admins have responded by protecting all of the articles on the list above. This is simply not a viable solution. Levzur has been at this in one form or another since '''December'''. He is simply trying to make us give up and go away. ], for instance, has already been protected at least six times over the past few months and Levzur has resumed attacking it within hours or days at the most after protection is lifted. Protection will achieve nothing except blocking anyone from editing the articles, which is apparently his aim - he does not debate or discuss his edits except to insist that he is right and everyone else is wrong (that is, when he bothers to explain his edits at all; he's not done this for some time). We can't leave articles protected indefinitely, which is what would be necessary if we were solely reliant on protection. In my view, blocking his IP addresses is the only solution to this persistent vandalism. -- ] 22:03, 13 May 2004 (UTC)

Wasn't Paul Vogel banned from posting to Misplaced Pages? Why, then, is this address still posting here? ]'''] 14:07, 13 May 2004 (UTC)
:I am not Paul Vogel, I don't even know who he is. Before a week ago, I rarely ever visited Misplaced Pages beyond random reads on topics of interest during surfing. History
The first page used for tracking vandalism was a user subpage, ManningBartlett/Naughty people, some time before 4 November 2001. The vandalism in progress page was established as VANDALISM IN PROGRESS on 1 December 2001 - the title was upper-case to make it easily distinguishable on recent changes). Around the same time, the Misplaced Pages Militia (since renamed to the Volunteer Fire Department) was formed to coordinate responses to press releases about Misplaced Pages. The "VANDALISM IN PROGRESS" page was moved to the Misplaced Pages namespace in August 2002 and was renamed to the current title in 2006. Its archives since 2003 may be found in Misplaced Pages:Requests for investigation/Archives and the talk archives since august 2002 can be found in the history of Misplaced Pages talk:Requests for investigation/Archive 4 and in text form as subpages of Misplaced Pages talk:Requests for investigation. Old subpages can also be found through special:Prefixindex/Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress. the long-term abuse page also grew out of "vandalism in progress". A section on the "vandalism in progress" page for persistent vandalism was added in February 2004, later abandoned, and then re-created as "Ongoing alerts" in September 2004; in December 2004 it was split off to its own page, titled Misplaced Pages:Vandalism in progress/Long term alerts.
