Okay, you worthless New York techie, I demand satisfaction. Really, @MusikAnimal, it's driving me batty. You don't want me to go nuts, do you? At least not any more nuts than I already am? If you didn't get anywhere at IRC, what about me reporting it as a bug? Even better, what about ''you'' reporting it as a bug? I don't care whether it's in fact a bug - it's bugging me, and that oughta be enough. I'm sure this post has brightened your day. Sunshine over and out.--] (]) 21:50, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
:Haha {{u|Bbb23}} sorry to hear you're still having trouble! We could file a phab report but let's first try to some troubleshooting. I haven't noticed a big delay lately... A few questions:

Hi MusikAnimal. I noticed at the bot request page that you're done with this request. That's great, thanks.{{pb}}So, where is it? How does one use it? What do it do?] (]) 00:50, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
:Well, Cyber marked it as done but it really isn't =P It's very close, though! I have a very neat tool I'm going to deploy soon. It features an API that I will have the bot use to do a one-time run and find all the files you're after. If it happens to come to the point where I'm suffering from fatigue and abandon the bot task, you will at least have the tool that should expedite your efforts. Best <span style="font-family:sans-serif">— <span style="font-weight:bold">] ]</span></span> 01:00, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
::Oh, okay, thanks for the update. No rush. :-)] (]) 01:03, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
{{od}}{{yo|Anythingyouwant}} Okay! I've got an ''initial'' release of the sound search tool up and running! There's still more work to do, but hopefully you'll find this useful as-is. Check it out at ]. During testing I found numerous composers who have unused files on Misplaced Pages, for instance, . In the result set, you can reveal info about the file (as specified by the "Information" template on Commons), play the file, and show which pages on Misplaced Pages use it. Each of those requires a separate API call, which is why we show the information on demand rather than by default show it, otherwise it'd have a significant impact on load time.{{pb}}Now, I realize this lets you only query for one composer at a time, which may make your efforts to update ] take longer. But I got to thinking... and correct me if I'm wrong... but the point behind ] is to list all the free music files of notable composers, right? There seems to be a lot of maintenance involved, as you'll need to keep that list updated, and also the "backlinks" (what links to this file). So, why not use the tool? It's always up-to-date, and let's you play the files right within the interface. The only information missing is "performer", "comment" and "genre". I thought maybe we could add this information to the file pages directly in some uniform way, then the tool can go off of that. This would sort of phase out the ] concept and the considerable effort it takes to keep it up-to-date. What are your thoughts?{{pb}}A quick explanation of updates I plan to make soon: Better API handling, as right now if there's server lag the tool may fail. I may convert some queries to go off of the replication database so this won't happen. Also I should be able to speed up the "List only files not currently used on Misplaced Pages", as we're querying the backlinks for each file individually when we could query for multiple files at once. This may all sound like gobbledygook to you but I thought I'd let you know anyway :){{pb}}Let me know what you think of the tool and how I can improve it. Best <span style="font-family:sans-serif">— <span style="font-weight:bold">] ]</span></span> 15:44, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
:Hey, that's very impressive. I think it will be an excellent tool for people who are focusing on a particular composer, which I sometimes do. You might want to add a third button "List only files currently used in articles", just in case people would like to know about that.{{pb}}The main issue I have is the following. When I use the Sound Lists, all I have to do is focus on the column labelled "What links to This File". I gaze down that column, and if there's no blank space then I just keep on gazing down the column, and I only stop my gaze when I reach blank space, because that means a file is not being used yet in a Misplaced Pages article. So, I can scan through dozens if not hundreds of composers in less than a minute, if all the respective files at commons are being put to good use in Misplaced Pages articles. But using the new tool would be difficult for this purpose, because I would have to type in and do a separate search for each composer. This is the main reason why I think the Sound Lists are very useful and worth keeping and updating. Anyway, who wants a ] that doesn't say what's inside it? :)] (]) 17:12, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
::The jukebox analogy is a great one :) I knew in its current state the tool wasn't going to fully offer what you wanted, and I'm content with what I have done, I just wasn't sure your approach and intent behind the sound list. The articles on composers probably don't change too much, or are subject to vandalism, otherwise I'd raise my point that they could changed by others while the sound list is not updated (e.g. the "what links to this file" could be outdated). If I had the time and energy, I could make a real jukebox just as you say, and how cool that would be! My goal here however was just to meet the bot request, which is well over halfway done. I built the API which the bot can now use, so it's just a matter of looping through the list of composers to find files not currently being used. About that... I could cross-reference against the sound lists, but figure just finding files that aren't being used would be sufficient, right? From there you can update the lists accordingly. Anyway I hope the frontend of the tool will still be of use moving forward :) Best <span style="font-family:sans-serif">— <span style="font-weight:bold">] ]</span></span> 01:54, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
:::A really cool thing about the sound list as it stands right now is that the "what links to this file" cannot ever become outdated. For example, if you take a look at , you'll see that the first item under "What links to this file" is ], but this will automatically be deleted from the Sound/list/A if someone removes the music file from that article. That's because the nifty code that I used to construct Sound/list/A is similar to the code you see at Wikimedia Commons for an image, where it says "File usage on other wikis" (i.e. that info is changed automatically when the file usage changes).
:::As for just finding files that aren't being used, I suppose that would be helpful, but it would be even more helpful to get files that aren't being used '''''&''''' that are not already listed in the sound list. That's because there are many files that are listed in the sound list but that are crummy, and so they shouldn't be included in articles....those files may be very poor quality or duplicates or redundant or whatever, and I've been trying to make a note of ''why'' they're not included (yet) in Misplaced Pages articles. I definitely would not want to list one of those files twice (or more) in the sound list.] (]) 03:23, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

This is a careless error on my part, so apologies! I've modified the script, with proper logging, and am going to give it another spin :) This time going to write to ] so we can see what was missed. Tech News: 2025-03
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- The Single User Login system is being updated over the next few months. This is the system which allows users to fill out the login form on one Wikimedia site and get logged in on all others at the same time. It needs to be updated because of the ways that browsers are increasingly restricting cross-domain cookies. To accommodate these restrictions, login and account creation pages will move to a central domain, but it will still appear to the user as if they are on the originating wiki. The updated code will be enabled this week for users on test wikis. This change is planned to roll out to all users during February and March. See the SUL3 project page for more details and a timeline.
Updates for editors
- On wikis with PageAssessments installed, you can now filter search results to pages in a given WikiProject by using the
inproject:
keyword. (These wikis: Arabic Misplaced Pages, English Misplaced Pages, English Wikivoyage, French Misplaced Pages, Hungarian Misplaced Pages, Nepali Misplaced Pages, Turkish Misplaced Pages, Chinese Misplaced Pages) - One new wiki has been created: a Misplaced Pages in Tigre (
w:tig:
) - View all 35 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, there was a bug with updating a user's edit-count after making a rollback edit, which is now fixed.
Updates for technical contributors
- Wikimedia REST API users, such as bot operators and tool maintainers, may be affected by ongoing upgrades. Starting the week of January 13, we will begin rerouting some page content endpoints from RESTbase to the newer MediaWiki REST API endpoints for all wiki projects. This change was previously available on testwiki and should not affect existing functionality, but active users of the impacted endpoints may raise issues directly to the MediaWiki Interfaces Team in Phabricator if they arise.
- Toolforge tool maintainers can now share their feedback on Toolforge UI, an initiative to provide a web platform that allows creating and managing Toolforge tools through a graphic interface, in addition to existing command-line workflows. This project aims to streamline active maintainers’ tasks, as well as make registration and deployment processes more accessible for new tool creators. The initiative is still at a very early stage, and the Cloud Services team is in the process of collecting feedback from the Toolforge community to help shape the solution to their needs. Read more and share your thoughts about Toolforge UI.
- For tool and library developers who use the OAuth system: The identity endpoint used for OAuth 1 and OAuth 2 returned a JSON object with an integer in its
sub
field, which was incorrect (the field must always be a string). This has been fixed; the fix will be deployed to Wikimedia wikis on the week of January 13. - Many wikis currently use Cite CSS to render custom footnote markers in Parsoid output. Starting January 20 these rules will be disabled, but the developers ask you to not clean up your MediaWiki:Common.css until February 20 to avoid issues during the migration. Your wikis might experience some small changes to footnote markers in Visual Editor and when using experimental Parsoid read mode, but if there are changes these are expected to bring the rendering in line with the legacy parser output.
Meetings and events
- The next meeting in the series of Wikimedia Foundation Community Conversations with the Wikimedia Commons community will take place on January 15 at 8:00 UTC and at 16:00 UTC. The topic of this call is defining the priorities in tool investment for Commons. Contributors from all wikis, especially users who are maintaining tools for Commons, are welcome to attend.
