So Random! is an upcoming American Disney Channel series that is scheduled to premiere on June 5, 2011. It was created as a spin-off from Sonny with a Chance after its leading actress, Demi Lovato, left the series to focus on other endeavors. The first promotional spot for So Random! aired on May 13, 2011, during a new episode of Wizards of Waverly Place. It is Disney Channel's third spin-off series (after the That's So Raven spin-off Cory in the House and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody spin-off The Suite Life on Deck).
Concept and production
In Sonny with a Chance, Lovato's character, Sonny Munroe, becomes the newest member of the cast of the sketch comedy show So Random!, which is presented as a show-within-a-show. The first two seasons of Sonny with a Chance followed the experiences of Munroe and the rest of the cast, who are often simply called "the Randoms." In October 2010 Lovato underwent treatment for "physical and emotional issues." In April 2011 she confirmed that she would not return to Sonny with a Chance for its third season.
Following Lovato's departure from the series, So Random! was introduced as it own series that will focus more on comedy skits than Sonny with a Chance had done. Filming for the season began on January 30, 2011. Each episode will feature sketch comedy skits with the So Random! cast, as well as a musical performance by a guest star. Originally intended to be a third season of Sonny with a Chance, Disney began to describe the show as a separate series following Lovato's confirmed departure.
