== Infobox NFL player ==

Over the weekend, I saw your insertion of the tracking code into the Infobox NFL player template to identify those articles in which more than one of the "position" parameters were being used. Do you have the ability to similarly identify all of those articles where any of the presently existing coaching parameters are being used? I believe it would be helpful if we could identify all existing instances of current coaches/former players that are using the Infobox NFL player template. Specifically, it should help focus the discussion on the present flaws in the template's layout, and also help focus the discussion as to which existing parameters should be eliminated as overkill and to better make room for the coaching parameters. Please let me know if you have the ability to do this. Regards, ] (]) 15:18, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
: yes, I could track any use of the coach parameters in {{tl|infobox NFL player}}. I was planning on doing this as part of the merger before it was interrupted. ] (]) 16:56, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
:: Frietjes, please insert the tracking code, so we can identify and examine those articles that currently use the coaching parameters presently included within Infobox NFL player. Thanks. ] (]) 18:22, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
::: track with ]. will take some time for cache to catch up and the category to fill. ] (]) 20:34, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
:::: Looks like the tracking category is now fully populated with 377 player-coach articles. I will be reviewing them over the next several days to create a list of issues to be addressed in a merged template. Also, did you see my query in the TfD discussion for Infobox college baseball team regarding the creation of mock-ups? Creating a mock-up or two would probably be helpful in illustrating the configuration and presentation of data in a merged player-coach template, as well as demonstrating the need to prioritize data and potentially remove certain non-essential parameters. Also, I would like to explore the possibility of a "type=" parameter that would toggle and permit us to use only certain parameters when configured for a current player or current coach, thus effectively creating subclasses of the same template. ] (]) 21:00, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
::::: I could mock-up a merge of any pair of the baseball template, or provide an assessment of how easy it would be to merge them in a sane manner. I probably won't respond on the TfD thread, just to avoid the drama. I am personally tired of the ] being filled with template mergers that were nominated by editors who have no idea how to actually merge templates. Now TfD is generally backlogged due to Plastikspork taking a wikibreak. Closing TfDs and merging templates is really a thankless job. but, I will finish the sandbox mock-up of the merger for NFL coach sometime this weekend to try to move that along. ] (]) 21:37, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

:::::: Frietjes, thank you for offering to do a mock-up for the merged baseball infoboxes, but we probably don't need one to accomplish the merge of the "college baseball" and "collegiate baseball" infoboxes (talk about "redundant"). After review, that particular combination may not even require any changes to the surviving template. More like a manual migration to template No. 1, followed by a deletion of template No. 2. I would be grateful if you would tweak your original November 4th TfD to specify merging "collegiate baseball" into "college baseball," but I think that's likely headed in that direction already.

:::::: After we see where the larger multi-template baseball infobox discussion is going, your mock-up skills may be useful in convincing some of the baseball editors to merge some of the other baseball-related templates. That may require some thrashing about on the baseball WikiProject talk page to get there, because I don't see Andy's current TfD proposals going anywhere. If nothing else, Andy's TfD en masse has at least drawn the attention of WikiProject Baseball to the subject. It's a very active project, and I expect that several of the identified templates will eventually be merged (if not just replaced with another more common template) after discussion.

:::::: I will be very interested to see your mock-up of the merged NFL player-coach infobox when it's ready. As I said, I think it will be a key element in convincing CFB and NFL editors to prioritize data, hopefully eliminate some of the less important parameters that will contribute to a ridiculously long combined infobox, and merge the player and coach data in a compact, presentable manner. BTW, did you understand my question about a "type=coach" or "type=player" parameter that would only permit us to toggle certain parameters for current coaches or players? Is that possible? In any event, once we have something to show, perhaps with several variants, we can go about notifying the individual CFB and NFL editors and soliciting their opinions.

:::::: Looking down the road a ways, at some point I would like to explore a potential merge of most of the various college sports infoboxes. The commonality of parameters is relatively high, and having a standardized graphic presentation would be better than the hodge-podge we have. Here again, I think the ability to toggle certain parameters that are specific to certain sports would be helpful and allow us to use a single template in multiple variants. The example would be "Infobox college sports team," that could then enable certain sport-specific parameters by toggling "type=baseball," "type=lacrosse," "type=swimming," "type=volleyball," etc. I know that it may seem odd to you, but there is actually a much higher degree of parameter commonality between college baseball and college basketball than there is between college baseball and professional baseball because of the affiliated universities and conferences, as well as the close similarity in the way conference tournaments and NCAA playoffs are structured. ] (]) 22:39, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

:: ...I think I know the cause now: the combined height of the flag and coat of arms on the righthand side of the template. I don't feel either should be removed, though. Perhaps it might be possible to rework the master Navbox template to prevent backgrounds from stretching to fill an image or images' combined height. == TfD Infobox collegiate baseball team ==

Freitjes, I volunteered to perform the manual migration of the 53 uses of Template:Infobox collegiate baseball team to Template:Infobox college baseball team, following the closing of the November 4th TfD. Several of the parameter field names appear to be unnecessarily long in Infobox college baseball. Is there any reason why we cannot shorten the longer ones to obvious abbreviations, e.g., conference_tournament > > conf_tourn, or national_champion > > nat_champ? Also, is it necessary to use the underscore/space? Please advise. I would like to settle this before proceeding. Regards, ] (]) 01:31, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

::: Also, I would like to create a new, separate field for the colored background bars for section header text. Currently, the color of these section header background bars is apparently tied to the first color hex.

Your edits are very useful. Trying to edit WP is like an never-ending book - there's always another page! Two things I like are standardisation and conciseness. There are another dozen-ish islands I need to add. And do you have any particular reason to change ha to km2? - Population-density 'auto' still works with ha, gives /km2. These tiddly islands it seems a bit arch to quote their size in km2.

As a matter of interest, why change <code><nowiki><reflist /></nowiki></code> to <code><nowiki>{{reflist}}</nowiki></code>?

And why <code><nowiki>{{ubl}}</nowiki></code> rather than <code><nowiki>{{plainlist}}</nowiki></code> which claims to be better than ubl?

] (]) mytime= Tue 10:49, wikitime= 02:49, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
: if 'auto' works with the area specified using ha, then I have no strong preference either way. my thought was that if it is large enough to be 1 or more square kilometer, might as well use that. as far as the ubl vs plainlist, the ubl template can be indented, but the plainlist template cannot. the ubl template can be used in image captions, but the plainlist template cannot. the plainlist template does allow for an unlimited number of entries, but otherwise they are basically equivalent. as far as the &lt;references /&gt; vs {{tld|reflist}}, there is an advantage to using {{tld|reflist}} when you have more than a couple references, in that the font-size is slightly smaller, and it allows for multicolumn presentation, and moving references out of the text using the {{para|refs}} feature. for an article with only one or two references, it's mostly a matter of personal preference. thank you for creating all the articles and spending so much time working on them. ] (]) 14:49, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Whoa! Edit conflict! I was working on citations, and went to sleep thinking to convert the table in the morning. Wake up, and it's done, almost! I got that list from the official web site. : difficult, due to the massive number of labels/fields, but I now have something in ]. the current issues are, (1) I had to merge several duplicate fields, so there will need to be some tracking to see if someone is using duplicate parameter names, (2) I had section the template using child infoboxes, so there will be two additional headers, and (3) I still need to double check for typos, and generate some test cases. ] (]) 22:32, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

::Did the new version come live? -- ] (]) 20:29, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
::: it's in the sandbox. the minor hang-ups at the moment are (1) possible transclusion depth issues, since the new version has to use nested infoboxes to get around the 100 label limit, and (2) there are now merged duplicate fields that need to be checked and fixed. if you look through the sandbox code, you will see several <nowiki>{{#if:{{{a|}}}|{{{a}}}|{{{b|}}}}}</nowiki> statements. each of these is a merged field that needs to be tracked. it would also be nice to have a list of all the fields in use, with the number of uses, so we could remove some of the underused parameters. it's possible that with some fields cut, I could make the whole template use fewer than 100 rows, and get around the limit, and avoid possible transclusion depth issues. ] (]) 15:00, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your replies, Freijes:
* ''the place to add this usage note is in {{tl|collapsible option}}, not in the transclusions, especially if you plan to add this to many different templates.
*: ''I have made an edit request to add the feature to collapsible option (see ])
*:: I didn't try adding it to {{tl|collapsible option}} as I imagine many (most?) templates ''don't'' have this option, but I do think it's something that may as well be possible. Thanks for adding the request.
* ''as for the fixes to ], the parenthetical sections are sublists, and should use a sublist markup
*: The drawback I've seen with the one-asterisk two-asterisk N-asterisk etc method -- neat though it is -- is that it allows trailing parentheses to be linewrapped away from their preceding link. (In other words, things like:
*:: ..... {{·}}{{·}}
*:: (){{·}} .....
*: rather than
*:: ..... {{·}}{{·}}
*:: (){{·}}{{·}}...)
*: Hence my resort to "&nbsp;(" before a newline starting with a single asterisk. I see your point, though, about it creating a mangled semantics. In that case:
* ''if you would like other editors to comment, I can post a note at ].
*: I imagine this linewrapping wrinkle can be ironed out, so perhaps posting a note/request to that effect is worthwhile..?
I hope you understand my feeling a bit perturbed about your appearing to shadow what I'm doing and undoing some of it without at least trying to ask/persuade me not to continue doing it (and thereby wasting ever more of both our times). Perhaps, though, you have been stung as a result before? In this case, as I'm hopeful the issues above can be sorted out, I'm happy to omit the "possible to omit state=" lines and, when appropriate, start using more than one asterisk per line. Accordingly, I'll now amend any country-topics templates I've left using them.

: I can reply here or on your talk page, or on both, whatever works for you. I, personally, don't mind that it wraps the line, and find that it does a perfectly fine job in adding the bullets for sublists. ] (]) 22:28, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

:: Leaving replies here seems to be fine. I was just wondering whether it's usually done the other way. I'm guessing it isn't possible to see what other editors have on their watchlists (and for how long), so I imagine it's easy to forget how what's maintenance to one editor might look to another. Something for me to try to remember as well.
:: I also meant to include above that your #ifexist:media: "hack" in the Country topics template seems to be working well -- and seems to be what's supposed to be done rather than a mere "hack"! Thanks.
:: ] (]) 22:37, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

::: yes, the #ifexist:media isn't the hack, but the renumber of the groups and lists to get the image to appear is a hack. something to keep in mind is that "#ifexist" is considered a semi-expensive parserfunction, although not as expensive as some string manipulation templates like {{tld|str left}}, {{tld|str right}}, and {{tld|str find}}. this isn't a big problem unless you try to use too many on one page. you can get an idea of the current expense of templates on a page by looking at the page source, where you will find performance information in a comment near the bottom of the page. ] (]) 22:43, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

:::: I see what you were referring to now: the "Optional custom group 1" section, yes? I like it -- and if, for some (good) reason, Navbox needs to yoke the image to list1, then I say it's more of a neat workround than a hack. I was thinking of trying to emulate it for any occasions when there might be no history group nor a custom1 group -- but then thought that's probably very unlikely..? ] (]) 23:15, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

::::: yes, I think making that more complicated can wait until it is actually needed. by the way, it would be great if you could use {{tl|small}} instead of {{tag|small}}. there is a minor difference in appearance, but the {{tl|small}} makes the text slightly larger, and will likely be modified into a css class, allowing for an override in one's personal css file. ] (]) 23:21, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

== Substitute parameters for one parameter within template code? ==

Hello again Frietjes,

I was just plugging a loophole in {{tl|Country topics}} when it occurred to me that it'd reduce the code's density if the repeated instances of <code><nowiki>{{{country|{{{territory|{{{region|}}}}}}}}}</nowiki></code> (with or without that final pipe) could be replaced with something shorter, e.g. <code><nowiki>{{{place|}}}</nowiki></code> (with or without pipe). Is that possible (and, if so, worthwhile)..? ] (]) 10:57, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
: the only major benefit would be making the code easier to read. I know that some templates where there is a real need to support multiple parameters use a "core" subtemplate, like {{tl|infobox mountain}}. given the newness of the code, I would say changing them all to use {{para|place}} or {{para|region}} probably wouldn't be a big problem if you like that better. ] (]) 15:31, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

:: Thanks for your thoughts. My second/third ones are to leave things as they are, as I reckon it's better to keep the choice between country / territory / region (and maybe something else in future) rather than unwittingly promote confusion between what's considered a territory rather than a country, etc, etc. (Hence also the current {{tl|Territory topics}} and {{tl|Region topics}} redirection pages.) And, it's less to do. ] (]) 16:01, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

== More flexible / nearly-as-simple image-handling in ]? ==

Another thought I'd appreciate your thoughts on, Frietjes. It's occurred to me that the standard
: <code><nowiki>]</code>
...is probably preferable to {{tl|Country topics}}'s current image-handling via
: {{para|image|''filename''}} {{para|imagesize|''px''}} {{para|imagelink|''article name''}}
...as the standard format is more flexible, nearly as simple and means the template uses three fewer parameters. Worth updating? ] (]) 02:18, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
:: that does seem like it would be less complicated. the trend for infobox-based templates is to use the image/imagesize type syntax, but for navbox-based templates, I don't think there is a trend. once you start adding link text, it seems like the advantages of using the image/imagesize syntax is diminished. ] (]) 16:18, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Frietjes,

I've noticed that (some? all?) the " topics" templates now using ] aren't displaying the first group (History) or any image they've been given &ndash; i.e. it looks like something's going on with handling whether or not the template has a group1/list1. It's probably something I've done, but I can't spot it. Perhaps your (fresher) eyes can (assuming you also see the omissions)..? ] (]) 09:38, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
: fixed it. there was an unclosed comment in the code. I found it by copying the template to the sandbox, and replacing all "<nowiki>{#</nowiki>" with "<nowiki>{{{{|safesubst:}}}#</nowiki>", then looking at the preview of a substituted version, which showed the problem pretty clearly. my other method of debugging is to just start substituting the template in one of my own personal sandboxes until I see the problem. == Template:Groupname rather than Longlink? ==

Happy Christmas etc, Frietjes &ndash; hope you are well.

It looks like ] might not get any further, so I took a look at the {{tl|longlink}} you mentioned. It says it's meant for use with sidebars and does add an unwanted 0.4em's worth of padding-right if used with groupnames, so how about this "groupname" version of the template instead?:

: <code><nowiki><div style="padding:0.1em 0;line-height:1.2em;{{{style|}}}">{{{1}}}</div></nowiki></code>

I think these padding and line-height settings mean it can be used with navboxes without changing the overall height of (a short, one-line) group. (But they can always be tweaked/corrected.) If you approve, I'll create a "groupname" template and start using it as/when I pass by wrapped groupnames. Best wishes, ] (]) 16:00, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

== Re Nazism templates ==

The slight modification I introduced is merely the desaturated form of the standard blue, and imo it looks very appropriate and understated. ::::::That I have done. And as evidence of the fact that this is a "deviation" to an ''acceptable'' degree on this project, I've submitted some examples of ''widespread'' use of the same "deviation". Sidebar with collapsible lists

Hello Frietjer, Can I ask you about the creation (edit) of sidebar with collapsible lists for the following Templates? (Template:Politics of Northern Cyprus, Template:Politics of Somaliland, Template:Politics of Transnistria, Template:Politics of Nagorno-Karabakh, Template:Politics of South Ossetia and Template:Politics of Abkhazia). These are in old form of. Thank You. Jan CZ (talk) 17:54, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

sure, I can help, but I would need to know how to divide it up into headings and lists under the headings. Frietjes (talk) 14:10, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
I have in mind the same editing style, as in the case of Template:Politics of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Your edit from 20.11. 20:38.2012. We need the one style for all politics templates (of states with limited recognition). Jan CZ (talk) 15:21, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
okay. I will have a look later. I don't have time right now. Frietjes (talk) 15:52, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Clearly, no hurry. And, thank you very much. Jan CZ (talk) 16:11, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Need a favor with template collapsing!

Hi, Frietjes i have been refered to you by TonyTheTiger to help me with the collapsible option in templates. TonyTheTiger contributed here making the navbox variable by adding collapsible options. I just need a favor with Template:Abu Bakr can you help make it variable too by adding collapsible options if you are similar with the technicality?? I mean to say can the individual heads like General Information, Family etc can they be made variable with collapsible options? i have worked on it but have not been successful. Hope to hear from you soon. -- Ibrahim ebi (talk) 18:06, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

okay, I changed it to use {{sidebar with collapsible lists}}. Frietjes (talk) 14:06, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for the help. Please do clear two things
1.Can this ({{sidebar with collapsible lists}}) be used if the list titles are Nested like in this case and
2.Is the list height alterable or is it constant??
Thanks again for the help. -- Ibrahim ebi (talk) 15:45, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
(1) yes, you can nest the template, but you have to be careful to avoid excess borders and padding. (2) yes, this can be altered either using the padding or setting a value for the "line-height" in the style. I will look at the other example later. I don't have time to do it right now. Frietjes (talk) 15:51, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the clues you have been a helping hand i will try it my self and if i face any difficulty i would definitely ask you.By the way Happy New Year. -- Ibrahim ebi (talk) 17:12, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

ISBN-10 and ISBN-13

Are {{ISBN-10}} and {{ISBN-13}} really needed? -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:32, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

changing references

Hi there. I noticed that you changed the citation in Bjørn Johansen (footballer)'s article from his playerhistory-profile to the transfermarkt-profile. What is the point of that, when his transfermarkt-profile supports nothing of the text written? Mentoz86 (talk) 15:51, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

you need to find a new source since {{playerhistory}} is being deleted. Frietjes (talk) 15:55, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I'm sorry, when looking further, his transfermarkt profile does list what clubs he played for (though the time of the transfers are incorrect), so I guess I was too fast on the trigger there. Again, I'm sorry, and keep up the good work replacing those playerhistory-templates. Mentoz86 (talk) 15:56, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
no problem. I stopped for now since I don't think transfermarkt is the best source either. I plan to use more official sources when possible. Frietjes (talk) 16:05, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
Those statistics-pages aren't really good, except for statistics (obviously). If you don't find another source, you might also replace <ref>{{playerhistory|###}}</ref> with something like <ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.playerhistory.com/player/### |title="Name" profile |publisher=playerhistory.com}}{{dead link}}</ref> and let someone else replace the dead link later. :) Mentoz86 (talk) 16:33, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

More templates

What about {{Rls}} for Template:Wests Tigers 2012 squad and Template:Wests Tigers 2011 squad.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:27, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
if you don't see /, then the template is not collapsible. Frietjes (talk) 16:07, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
{{National squad no numbers}} and {{National squad}} for many templates at .--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:51, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
if you search the source for those templates, you will find there is no "state", so nothing can be done there until |state= is added. Frietjes (talk) 16:09, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
