r/Incels is a former subreddit (community on Reddit) that was dedicated to men who claimed to be "involuntarily celibate" as they lacked any form of romantic or sexual relationship; it was launched in 2013, but banned from Reddit on 7 November 2017 due to violations of the site's content policy.
Content
Members of the subreddit often blamed their lack of romantic success on women; this lead to many members advocating sexual assault or violence against women, which the subreddit's misogynistic users referred to as "femoids" and "sluts"; notable posts included "reasons why women are the embodiment of evil". Women who attempted to discuss their issues, or people supporting them, were banned. The subreddit's users also targeted "normies" and "Chads" who were perceived to be protecting them, while admiring murderers such as Elliot Rodger, perpetrator of the 2014 Isla Vista shootings, who identified as an "incel".
Banning
However, due to Reddit launching new policies against inciting violence on October 25, the subreddit was banned by Reddit staff on November 7; the subreddit had previously attracted attention from other Reddit users, who had created a petition on change.org. It has been suggested that this was because an r/incels poster impersonated a woman and feigned being a rape victim seeking legal advice, though another reason that has been floated is that members of the subreddit planned to castrate a member's roommate. Former members of the subreddit appear to have migrated to other platforms, such as Voat or 4chan.
