items keep getting erased from a page on deana martin
I have been helping Deana Martin update her wiki page, because the links we put in from songs she has recorded to descriptions of those songs keep getting deleted. Also, the photo of the book cover she had uploaded (book is about her father) was deleted. After they were deleted the first time I went in and put connections to articles that showed she had recorded those song, but after a couple weeks those links disappeared again. Someone named Walter Gorilitz is the person deleting the links between songs. We don't know who he is or why he is deleting the links. Can you help me understand what is going on please

- Please use links instead of URLs here (Deana Martin): it makes life easier.
- Please note that since you are assoiciated with the subject, you have a conflict of interest. This is not a value judgement, its just a fact. Therefore please read our policy at WP:COI. (In a nutshell, don't edit the article directly, make suggestions on its talk page instead.) If you are being compensated in any way for your editing, you must make a declaration of this in order to comply with our terms of service: see WP:PAID.
- Please discuss these edits with the other editor by opening a new section on the article's talk page. Please assume good faith (WP:AGF). A polite discussion that assumes that the other editor is trying to improve the article usually works fairly well. In your case in particular, since you have a COI, you will be depending on other interested editors. If the discussion does not reach an agreement, come back here and we can tell you what to do next. -Arch dude (talk) 01:28, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Legally recognized places & notability guideline.
One can read at Misplaced Pages:Notability (geographic features) that: "Legally recognized, populated places are presumed to be notable". But how can we document that a collection of buildings next to village, having a distinct name, is a legally recognized place? Should we trust Censuses that attribute some people to that place/area? Or should a local governing body exist so as to say that area is a legally recognized entity? Τζερόνυμο (talk) 08:00, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Unable to reset password blocked globally?
Hi, received a notification that a failed login was attempted on my account. Immediately went to change password as a precautionary measure. It kept on resetting the page and new passwords didn't seem to stick. I can login fine, as is evident here, but I thought I'd try and request a new password as if I was locked out. Upon doing so I hit upon an error message stating I was blocked globally from requesting a new password.
Anyone able to advise? I don't want to lose access to my account even though I'm not as active as I once was. I'm trying to do all this on the mobile interface while at work, doesn't seem that intuitive a way of going about things so I'll apologise if in the wrong place. Many thanks.Narom (talk) 11:35, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Narom: You can request at most 5 temporary password emails per hour. The bottom of the mobile version has a "Desktop" link to get the desktop interface. If you are logged in and know your password then you can use "Change password" at Special:Preferences without an email. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:51, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- Many thanks for the reply. I have had no temporary passwords at all, requesting one tells me I'm globally blocked from doing so. Going to that page just doesn't seem to do anything. I can carefully enter passwords into both boxes and submit but nothing happens. The boxes empty themselves, no, error messages appear nor confirmation that it may have worked. I log out to test only for it to only work with my old password that I want to change. Since posting this I've received two more emails stating failed login attempts. Colour me confused. - Special:ChangePassword works for me in Firefox on a pc. I haven't tried a mobile device. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:26, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- @PrimeHunter: Thanks for your help, it just seems it did not agree with me doing it on a mobile device. Now i'm home and at my desktop it changed exactly as youd expect. Cheers Narom (talk) 14:18, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Table cell problem
Could anyone help with this table problem, please?
Here is the table:

Year | Pre-2001 | 2001-02 | 2002-03 | 2003-04 | 2004-05 | 2005-06 | 2006-07 | 2007-08 | 2008-09 | 2009-10 |

Notes | Widen this to 10 cols; delete cell to the right |
I need a single cell on the bottom row to the right of the column 1 heading "Notes", in which I can place text. The cell is shown above as the one containing the text "Widen this to 10 cols; delete cell to the right". It needs to be 10 columns wide. The cell currently to its right (wide and blank) needs to be discarded.
I can achieve this with a colspan instruction but the result is a gray cell and bold font, which I don't want.
A solution will be much appreciated! SCHolar44 (talk) 12:59, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Tracked in Phabricator
Task T193769
I keep receiving notices from WP that there have been multiple failed attempts to log into my account from a separate device within the past 2 days. Is this an actual live user trying to hack my account? or just a computer attempting over and over again? and finally: should I change my password? it's pretty strong now. Maineartists (talk) 14:49, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- Here because I noticed many recent attempts wiki-wide. I'm not a security expert, but I wouldn't recommend changing your password if it is really strong, unless you fear you may have used it on a device with a key-logger installed or otherwise compromised. I just tried to log into my account with a incorrect password as a test and am awaiting the email from the website. I saw on village pump technical near the bottom that it could be bot, but I don't know if the developers at the 2FA-for-all-editors are testing random accounts. - @L3X1: You may not get an email notification if the login attempt is from an IP address or device you have recently logged in with. @Maineartists: If your password is strong and not used at other websites then don't worry. Using the same password at multiple sites would be a big security risk. You can disable the notifications at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo but may have to do it at the wiki where the login attempts are happening. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:40, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- My password is quite strong and not used anywhere else; so I will take your advice. Thanks! I appreciate your time. Maineartists (talk) 15:59, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- User:Maineartists, User:L3X1 - That is interesting, because I just received a failed login attempt message, and was about to a few questions here. I will not be changing my password, because I know very well what it is, and no one else has a chance at guessing it. My question is whether repeated unsuccessful login attempts can be reported to CheckUser and whether CheckUser can soft-block the IP addresses or IP address ranges that the attempts are from. Since another editor has also reported a failed login, my guess would be that a long-term abuser is behind the attempts, and that strong passwords will work just fine. Can CheckUser investigate if the problem persists? (I know that CheckUser doesn't publicly associate IP addresses with people, but that only means that they don't publicly associate them, because they do see the IP addresses.) This is all over Misplaced Pages today. This was some sort of mass action probably by a malicious bot of some kind. I don’t think the intention was really to breach accounts but rather to cause a bunch of chaos, which they seem to have succeeded at. (related threads are at WP:AN WP:TEA and WP:VPT) I myself haven’t gotten a notice today. It’s been a while, so I don’t remember, does the notification tell you the IP of the attempted login? Otherwise I don’t see how CU could be of use here. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:34, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- I got a notification about a failed log in but it's good to see it wasn't just me. The notification doesn't mention the IP address. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 19:36, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for verifying that. In that case there is no way for CU to do anything. If they actually succeeded at breaching an account it would be different, but CU can’t tell us who just attempted to log in. Someone in another thread noted that today is designated as “National Password Day” by some organization or other and I suspect this is some trolls way of “celebrating” that. - Same happened to me. I sure as anything wasn't on Misplaced Pages eight hours ago. The last time somebody tried to break into my account, I ended up asking why the offending IPs weren't revealed. If someone tries to log into an account maliciously, they have surrendered "privacy" for their IPs, in my opinion. Apparently there is already a Phabricator task on the issue of login-attempting IPs, but it is still open. Master of Time (talk) 20:35, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah, it’s apparently in the works but not up and running yet. The back office is apparently going to be making some sort of statement about this int he near future. Collapsed subinfobox content won’t show
Hello experts,
I have copied a script from Template:Subinfobox bodystyle#Examples with the aim of having an infobox partially collapsed -- in the lower parts -- on opening. My problem is that clicking “Show” doesn’t expand anything (nothing happens). A shortened script is as follows:
the article name | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
File:An image.jpgA caption is here | |||||
Overview | |||||
Status | Operational
| ||||
Service | |||||
Type | Street tram operation |
Ideally, I’d also like to colour the section headings of the collapsed elements ("Operation" and "Technical" in the example shown) a little greyer than the background, to match the normal infobox headings as in "Overview"; and to centre the words "Operation" and "Technical", which at the moment are right-aligned.
I would be very grateful for help; I've tried my best but I fall short of my ambition at the moment! SCHolar44 (talk) 21:45, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

- @SCHolar44: Your "show" links work but there is nothing to display. You can only use parameter names which are known by the template you are currently in. If that template is the general {{Infobox}} then you have to work with the numbered header/label/data parameters at Template:Infobox#Main data. I made an example here. - By entry, I'm assuming you mean article? To my knowledge, you cannot change the name of an article. However, I'd suggest making a redirect from Phenomenological Studies to the French one, or instead, you can create a new article (with both language name) as the title, and merge the original article to it. I'd suggest the former. Hope this helps! Also, please do not make 2 of the same sections. ⇒ Lucie Person (talk) 22:52, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Once in a while, what if I find something that is almost to WP:SHARE and WP:LOGOUT? Tainted-wingsz (talk) 04:21, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hello, Tainted-wingsz. There is nothing wrong with an editor editing while logged out, either accidentally or intentionally, unless it is done to evade scrutiny, or to falsely appear to be multiple people in a discussion or debate, such as an AfD or an RfC. Similarly, there is nothing wrong with two different editors working from the same computer or location, so that they have the same IP address or similar IPs, unless they are apparently a) working together, and b) attempting to deceptively appear separate so as to gain more weight in a discussion or an edit war. If you seriously think that sort of abusive conduct is occurring, privately alert a CheckUser as described in WP:LOGOUT, But if in doubt, don't, is my advice. - Oh, it's that there was a problem, where it fitted in one of those category, or "categories." But the info, closely had similar strange edits to a past user that I mention on here. (the person before me at the time, was inserting a see also. But are the said items related to the article, as later on it had a WP:NOTHERE tag to the talk page.) I.e, Saying a political sentence while finishing an edit on a page/ article. And what does that have to do with anything, really? Method to display full Category without paging?
The list of pages in a given Category breaks into additional pages after 200 entries. Is there a way (URL param or other?) to display the entire category on a single page without breaking? Thanks in advance, AUTiger » talk 05:58, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Autiger: I don't know a method on a category page. Misplaced Pages:PetScan at https://petscan.wmflabs.org/ can list the first 10000 pages in html format and maybe more in other formats on the "Output" tab. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:46, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Updates to the Air Seychelles Wiki Page
Hi Support,
I am trying to push some updates on the Air Seychelles Misplaced Pages page. However, I got a message from Talk that I am not citing sources (Note that in the past, I cited sources from the official website but were declined). Kindly be advised that as a member of the company I am providing the correct information to be updated, but they are reverted back to original values. Recent changes that was made is as per below:
(1) Paris and Madagascar route no longer applicable as they have been stopped. (2) Number of Twin Otter aircraft reduced to 5 from the fleet. The Airbus A330 is no longer with the company, hence to be removed as well. (3) Codeshare partners with Jet airways, Etihad airways and South African airways (saa) only.
Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pvalmont (talk • contribs) 06:01, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Pvalmont: I saw you mentioning the official website link in the edit summary. That can be used as reference. Visit here for more information about citing sources. Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk to me) 06:24, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- There are two problems with your edits. One is that you have a WP:Conflict of interest and other editors wonder whether you are WP:PAID to edit. We often have paid editors who want to push publicity and promotion onto Misplaced Pages, but clearly this was not your intention here. The other problem is that you removed a reference without replacing it with a better reference. The argument "I know, I work for the company" is not an acceptable authority on Misplaced Pages since we have no way to confirm who you are. See WP:Referencing for beginners on how to add a reference to confirm the corrections that you want to make. Dbfirs 06:42, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

I wish to report the fact that the photograph on the Harold Acton page, captioned 'Harold Acton', is definitely not him. It has appeared recently. Please can you help me get this information across. 2017 Wikitext Editor
At some point the editor switched and my edits are all tagged 2017 Wikitext editor. I have no problem with said editor.
My question is: there are tags for other models of editor, and a lot of edits are not tagged at all. What is the not-tagged-at-all editor? Is it the the former one from before Wikitext? How do I get it? When I push Edit the Wikitext editor is the one that comes up, so I would expect to see that tag all over. But I don't.
I understand that once in that editor I have an option to use some WYSWYG version, which I usually eschew. Is that the unmarked one? M.boli (talk) 14:05, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- @M.boli: You get the 2017 wikitext editor by enabling "New wikitext mode" or "Automatically enable all new beta features" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures. They are disabled by default. VisualEditor can be enabled at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing. wikEd can be enabled at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. wikEd is a user script and doesn't make a tag. If you don't enable any of these then you get the default source editor. The mobile version of the site has a variant of the source editor and also makes a tag. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:18, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- @PrimeHunter: Yap! Thank you. I turned off the beta features, and I get an older editor page. I like the new one, but I was darn curious. Thanks! M.boli (talk) 16:38, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
Identifying reliable source
If I enter some text and make a reference, can I reference a source whose reliability I do not know, I assume that if it is not reliable it will be rejected. What is the easiest way to do this without causing confusion? Sui docuit (talk) 14:41, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- First, you must actually access and read the source, not just assume that the source says something (e.g., because someone else used it). If you have done that and the source "feels" OK to you and does not clearly fail the criteria in WP:RS, then be bold and use it. If you are in doubt but you think it might be OK, then use it but also post a question at Misplaced Pages:Reliable sources/Noticeboard, and then come back later and repair the article if needed. Please don't just assume some magic will happen: all the editors are volunteers and it's better to avoid making additional work for them if possible. -Arch dude (talk) 15:09, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- Pinging Sui docuit, and elaborating on the above
please don't just assume some magic will happen
: there is no computer program to tell if a source is reliable, either, if that is what you had in mind. Google and Facebook are full of smart people when it comes to algorithms, machine learning etc. yet Facebook's answer to fake news websites (admittedly a subset of "unreliable sources") for now is manual review and asking users to flag content. So you cannot expect a team of Misplaced Pages volunteers or staff to have that nailed down with automation. Tigraan 16:56, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- Pinging Sui docuit, and elaborating on the above
- To put it a bit more positively, Welcome to the team! As an editor, you have just as much authority as all of the rest of us, and we appreciate your efforts, so just be bold (WP:BOLD) and do what you think is the right thing. If someone disagrees, they can revert, and then you can discuss (WP:BRD). If you are unsure, discuss first. This is the process we have used to create an encyclopedia of more than 5.6 million articles in less than 20 years, with the help of more than a million editors. -Arch dude (talk) 02:45, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
Is there a Whatlinkshere for sections
I split the section of an article into another article and fixed incoming links. But then, I found that Special:WhatLinksHere was not indicating me the redirections to specific sections. For example, the articles that link directly to Jesus#Perspectives. What can I do to fix see them and fix this kind of links systematically? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MaoGo (talk • contribs)
- I tried a few hacks based on
insource
but did not manage to make any of them work. Tigraan 17:04, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- A search on insource:"Jesus#Perspectives" may work but it can both give false results and miss real results, e.g. if the section link used a redirect. It gives no real article results here but clicking "Everything" gives two results in other namespaces (one of them your above question). You can sometimes reduce false results with insource:"Jesus#Perspectives" linksto:Jesus which only gives pages which actually link to Jesus. Both false results did here so it makes no difference. The more complicated insource:"Jesus#Perspectives" insource:/Jesus\#Perspectives/ is more accurate by only listing pages with the exact string "Jesus#Perspectives". A normal search will allow other characters instead of "#". PrimeHunter (talk) 17:09, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Separation of a title from body of article.
Hello. Recently I added a section to the page called "List of superlative trees" in which I listed the trees bearing the largest flowers. Recovering my account
Hi, I reset the password to my account (User:MaxBrowne) but now I've managed to forget my new password. I don't think I had any email associated with that account, if I did it was probably one that I've abandoned. Can I still recover that account? A quick check will confirm that my IP is the same as that of MaxBrowne. I will happily abandon this account if I can recover the original. MaxBrowne2 (talk) 06:39, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- If you cannot possibly remember the password, and have no access to an email account associated with that account, then that account will have to be abandoned. I can sometimes remember old passwords by waiting a day or two, engaging in my favorite relaxation techniques, and putting myself into the frame of mind that I was in when I created the password. Good luck to you. Cullen Let's discuss it 06:49, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Couldn't you just do an IP check to confirm my identity, then email to an address associated with this new account? MaxBrowne2 (talk) 08:06, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- User:MaxBrowne has stored an email address. If you enter the username and no email address at Special:PasswordReset then a password mail is sent to whatever address is stored. If you may have access to it then check for spam/junk filtering by your email system. The last password you stored in the account doesn't expire when a password mail is sent. It only expires if the mailed password is actually used so you can still try to remember the password. Wikimedia system administrators (not Misplaced Pages administrators like me) can set a new email address for an account so a password mail can be received but they only do it in rare cases like hacked accounts with high user rights. And they require strong evidence of identity, probably much more than having access to the same IP address. I doubt they would bother with a verification of your identity when the account only has rollback rights and 8,000 edits. You can just use the new account and mention the connection on the user pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:28, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

I edited an article and my change was removed.
I edited an article on https://en.wikipedia.org/Sun_Tzu.
I added: "In 2018 The Revised Art of War by Keiran Proffer was published in the U.K. This is the first complete revision of Sun Tzu’s work in the English language." This change was removed the following day.
Under history it showed: (cur | prev) 17:19, 4 May 2018 Underbar dk (talk | contribs) . . (30,833 bytes) (-162) . . (Undid revision 839585632 by Cath Writer (talk) need to clarify what's meant by "revision" here, otherwise i don't see the need to WP:ADvertise another version by a self-published author) (undo | thank) (Tag: Undo)
'Need to clarify what's meant by "revision"'. Easy to ask, but a full explanation would take some time. Basically ′The Art of War′ was made as a series of terse jottings, in quite a random order, and which frequently wander off the point of the chapter. A revision, putting the notes into a logical order, and re-arranging the chapters, has been made in Chinese, but ′The Revised Art of War′ is the first revision in the English language.

- You should go to Talk:Sun Tzu and make this explanation. The article's talk page is tthe best place to discuss the article. People who are interested in the article will be watching it. Underbar dk will probably be watching it also and can respond with more info about why the info was removed. ~ GB fan 10:59, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

Hello Misplaced Pages, I have a question about the article "Conversion Therapy"
I read the article concerning conversion therapy and found it to be quite political and even biased, and trying my best to conserve as a non-biased source as I have in the past seen it as not this. Note, I do not condone this practice at all, again, I just want to preserve fact over opinion on Misplaced Pages. The edit I made was quickly undone, and I made 2 simple edits. The previous contributor to the article called it a pseudoscience, despite conversion therapy not being a direct or even indirect contradiction of science. The other I edited from was removing a politically charged "rant" sounding bit of the article in the beginning. These were the only changes I made, and was wondering if you could share more light on what I did was not contributive in nature. Thanks (https://en.wikipedia.org/Conversion_therapy) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.144.160.126 (talk) 21:54, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

Inquiry on adding a new feline member to "List of oldest cats" page please
Hello! As long-time readers of Misplaced Pages (and having just become a registered user), we are hoping to have some info added to your page "List of oldest cats" (a semi-protected page) but are not sure how to go about doing this.
Our beloved tabby Meetsi is verifiably 24 years old, making her the third oldest cat in Canada (and 8th in the world currently alive), at least according to this Wiki list. She was born in 1994 and has a microchip in her ear with this birth year. We also have dated vet records (an "authoritative agency"), to substantiate our claim. She may not live for much longer, but we would be honored to have her join your esteemed feline list:).
Please advise how we could add Meetsi's info to your site. We appreciate your help in getting her longevity officially recognized!

- You have not made any edits to Draft:Dementia and nutrition between April 18th and May 6th (above), so I wonder what version you have been editing? Do you have another account and a version in a sandbox? Perhaps you have a copy on your own computer that you have been updating? The draft contains unencyclopaedic language in addressing the reader as "you", and reads more like an essay. It is unlikely that your draft will be accepted as a separate article, so I hope your professor is realistic and expects only a "Misplaced Pages-style" attempt. If you find an updated copy, you are welcome to copy it to your draft so that your professor can read it there, but you will need to explain that you made some edits off-line. - Hello, please provide links to any pages where you are encountering difficulties. Your edits, from the IP used to post here, at Roger Troutman and Zapp have not been removed; although some tidying and possibly sourcing would be needed to bring them more into line with Misplaced Pages's manual of style. Eagleash (talk) 17:58, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hello, person contributing from Arizona and Colorado. You have been adding unreferenced stuff to the Zapp (band) and Roger Troutman articles, and related topics, for a couple of months now, using multiple IP addresses. Your disruptive contributions have resulted in the Troutman biography being protected from unregistered users such as yourself, a protection style called WP:Pending changes. The pending changes status means that your contributions don't show up to the reader until a registered user comes along and approves them.
- Examples of your disruptive changes include:
- Unreferenced list of family names
- Crediting Roger and Larry instead of Zapp & Roger
- Accusation of theft, a violation of the WP:BLP policy
- removal of a band member
- Asserting falsely that Zapp is just Roger Troutman and not his other brothers and other band members
- Puffery including Troutman's "most prized creation six sons".
- Lots of unreferenced puffery and promotion, including Troutman's "most prized creation six sons".
- promotion of Roger Troutman
- promotion of Roger Troutman
- promotion of Roger Troutman
- promotion of Roger Troutman
- promotion of Roger Troutman
- So the answer to your question is that you should register a username so you can edit through article protection, but more importantly, you should stop promoting Roger Troutman to the detriment of the other brothers, and you should always cite your sources for information. Am I correct? User-duck (talk) 18:02, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

- @User-duck: The sheet music may well contain the information, it is not possible to say from what we have. However, there is a requirement to assume good faith and trust that the original editor has verified it. However, the link is to an Amazon listing of the sheet music for sale and we probably should not be linking to 'commercial' pages like that. By the same token, if a book contained information used as a source in an article, the reference would be to the book itself, not an Amazon listng of it. Eagleash (talk) 19:12, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

is feeding the vendor; we should not be doing that. The correct citation, in my opinion, provides detail from the source, from the sheet music: author, title, publisher and location, ismn, year of publication, etc. - —Trappist the monk (talk) 19:23, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
