Passion Pop is an Australian alcoholic beverage, labelled as a carbonated 'passion flavoured' wine. The product is produced by Golden Gate Wines in New South Wales and comes in a number of flavours: Original (passionfruit-flavoured); Mixed Berry (strawberry with a hint of raspberry); Peach; and Suze (butterscotch flavored).
Passion Pop's low price made it very popular amongst Australian university students, although an over supply of grapes in Australia in 2006 has seen its popularity slide as students gravitate to higher quality wines whose prices have dropped.
Specifications
Passion Pop is produced by Golden Gate Wines, as are a number of less well-known and similarly priced drinks. Passion Pop is labeled as a carbonated 'passion flavoured' wine, and comes in 750ml bottles. The drink is 9.5% alcohol, meaning that one bottle contains 5.6 standard drinks.
Packaging
Passion Pop comes in a 750mL glass champagne bottle. It was one of the first beverage products in Australia to utilise a plastic stopper (or "cork").
Passion Pop in Australian Culture
Passion Pop, like other inexpensive mass-market alcoholic beverages, is often referred to as goon, an Australian slang term used to describe alcohol that is bought cheaply for excessive consumption - most commonly by youth. The most common other beverage referred to as goon is box wine, once again for its relatively low price and large quantity per package.
Passion Pop is generally consumed by youth, and first-time alcoholic drinkers. Due to its sweetness, it is more often preferred by young females than males.
