Nuestra Señora Reina de los Angeles was founded in 1784 as an asistencia, or "sub-mission" to the nearby Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. The assistant mission's name was derived from one of the advocations of Mary, mother of Jesus. Priests from San Gabriel divided their time between that outpost and the new site.
History
The priests abandoned the site as the Pueblo de Los Angeles grew in population. Fray Luis Gíl y Taboada placed the cornerstone of a new church to serve the local pobladores (settlers) on August 18, 1814. Architect designed the new building and supervised its construction; the completed structure was dedicated on December 8, 1822. A replacement chapel (La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Angeles, or "The Church of Our Lady Queen of the Angels"—nicknamed the "Plaza Church") was rebuilt utilizing materials of the original church in 1861; for years it served as the sole Roman Catholic church in Los Angeles. The facility has operated under the auspices of the Claretian Missionary Fathers since 1908.
