Area code 205 is a telephone numbering plan code covering central and western Alabama including the cities of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. As the area code of his hometown of Birmingham, American Idol winner Ruben Studdard was known for wearing t-shirts with "205" printed on them.
The 205 area code served the entire state of Alabama until January 15, 1995 when the lower portion of the state became area code 334.
