He is Iran's former ambassador to the UN (1989-1995), and France (2002-2005). Kharazi was also the senior adviser to Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati. In addition Kharazi was chairman of the 1997 Tehran OIC Summit. He is currently on leave of absence due to his conflicting political viewpoint with the present Iranian administration and is former President Khatami's adviser.

He was also a key figure in Iran’s two-year nuclear negotiations with the EU trio and past advocate of “normalisation” with the United States.
