Hi, I noticed that a newbie user, ], has been blocked indefinitely, the reason given being that he's not here to create an encyclopedia. I'm just trying to find out a little more about whether such a block is reasonable, since it doesn't fit any of the criteria in the ].
Condolence has never edited an article, but he has made suggestions on talk pages. He's obviously not used to scholarly work or research, or the inner workings of WP, but he wasn't being disruptive, and I've seen nothing to suggest he was acting in bad faith. I think what happened is he applied to become an admin, and some of the other admins assumed he was mocking the system. I asked the blocking admin at ] to clarify how this block fits with WP policy, and didn't get a very enlightening response. I'm particularly surprised at the block being indefinite, since this is supposedly reserved for extreme cases of vandalism and disruption.
Condolence has since returned as ], and is currently struggling to create the article ]; he was previously told that the only way to redeem himself was to create an article with references, a somewhat arbitrary requirement, I think. I believe he's just a newbie user who has been too timid to start editing pages yet, but is excited by Misplaced Pages and wants to learn how to contribute. So what if he's made lots of edits to his user page? It's giving him practice at editing, and it's hardly a load on the servers, is it?
Just looking for another opinion, since Ryulong has failed to satisfactorily answer my questions. Thank-you kindly, ]] 05:24, 24 June 2008 (UTC) |

AfD nomination of John Diefenbaker
An editor has nominated John Diefenbaker, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Misplaced Pages's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Misplaced Pages is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/John Diefenbaker and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:14, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Rum Sodomy and the Lash Pogues album cover.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Rum Sodomy and the Lash Pogues album cover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 02:03, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:The Waterboys Album cover.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:The Waterboys Album cover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Misplaced Pages:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Misplaced Pages:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Misplaced Pages policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 02:22, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Indef block on User:Condolence
Hi, I noticed that a newbie user, User:Condolence, has been blocked indefinitely, the reason given being that he's not here to create an encyclopedia. I'm just trying to find out a little more about whether such a block is reasonable, since it doesn't fit any of the criteria in the blocking policy.
I asked the blocking admin at User talk:Ryulong#Indef block on User:Condolence to clarify how this block fits with WP policy, and didn't get a very enlightening response. I'm particularly surprised at the block being indefinite, since this is supposedly reserved for extreme cases of vandalism and disruption.
Condolence has since returned as User:Condalence, and is currently struggling to create the article Gray magic; he was previously told that the only way to redeem himself was to create an article with references, a somewhat arbitrary requirement, I think. I believe he's just a newbie user who has been too timid to start editing pages yet, but is excited by Misplaced Pages and wants to learn how to contribute.
