WAOW-TV channel 9 (PSIP, digital channel 29) is an ABC affiliate which serves Wausau and Rhinelander, Wisconsin, along with other communities in north central Wisconsin. WAOW also has a satellite station in Eagle River, WYOW channel 34 (PSIP, digital channel 28), which extends the station's reach to extreme northern Wisconsin and the western portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The stations also carry a digital subchannel of The CW called North Central CW which carries the programming of the CW Plus national schedule, and is available on local cable providers. The station had also carried the Retro Television Network until mid-February 2009; since the beginning of March, the station replaced it with This TV .

WAOW's transmitter is located in Wausau, Wisconsin on Rib Mountain. WYOW's transmitter is located on Thunder Lake Rd. in Sugar Camp. Both WAOW and WYOW are owned by Quincy Newspapers.

WAOW/WYOW converted fully to digital on February 17, 2009 without a nighlight period for WAOW; WYOW's analog signal remains on the air with a nightlight loop .

History

Studios

WAOW is Wausau's second television station having signed on the air on June 12, 1965 serving as a satellite station of Madison, Wisconsin's WKOW as part of the Wisconsin Television Network, which would later include WXOW in La Crosse and WQOW in Eau Claire. By the 1980s the station would gradually start focusing more on the Wausau/Rhinelander market by adding local programming and content.

On New Year's Day 1997, WYOW came on the air to extend the station's reach further to the north. WYOW airs WAOW's entire schedule beyond differing promos identifying the station under their Northwoods 34 branding.

WAOW had also previously aired Fox's NFL package from 1994-1999 after the NFC contract and rights for most Green Bay Packers games moved from CBS (locally, WSAW channel 7), due to the lack of a local Fox affiliate. When Wittenberg-licensed WFXS (Channel 55) came on the air in December 1999, it became the area's Fox affiliate, and later contracted with Channel 9 to provide their 9pm newscast. In February 2009, the station also aired WFXS's digital signal temporarilly on subchannel 9.3/34.3 while that station ironed out problems with the activation of their digital transmitter.

WAOW's weather staff also provides weather updates to Midwest Communications stations in Wausau, along with stations in their other markets without an existing weather forecasting deal with a television station in their market (in these cases the WAOW meteorologists just identify under the station's calls without WAOW branding).

WBIJ

In mid-February 2009, Quincy announced the purchase of Crandon based WBIJ (Channel 4), a FamilyNet affiliate which was sold to Quincy by the widow of the station's founder. Quincy intends to convert the station to become a new satellite station to serve the northeast portion of the market near the Michigan border after completing the station's digital channel 12 transmitter facilities .
