The German Edition of the Diary (1849) is not complete, although the editor states this in his foreword! Instead the editor left out all (long!) passages which dealt with every day life and war cruelties which to him were obviously of minor interest to the reader. He fills in the gaps with short sentences hinting at the missing text. That is the only way the reader learns about those omittances.
