The Badener Greifs are a German American football club from Karlsruhe, Germany.

History

The Greifs were founded in 1982 by a group of motorcycle enthusiasts and thus are one of the oldest existing American Football clubs in Germany. They take part in regulation play since 1983.

The first Greifs were a motley crew of some hardworkin', toughplayin' and heavydrinkin' local boys (who never saw a football before?), active and retired American G.I.'s and a bunch of former Mannheim Redskins players, who were first coached under Charles "Chuck" Fernandez. To everyone's surprise they won their first ever game against the Mannheim Redskins, on a rainy Easter saturday in Mannheim, in 1983.

The Greifs celebrated their first major success in 1985 with the move into the 1.st Bundesliga.

The biggest success in the club's history came in 1987 when the Badener Greifs made it all the way to the German Bowl IX.

After victories in the playoffs against the Dortmund Giants (48:6) and the Ansbach Grizzlies (13:7), the Greifs lost to the Berlin Adler in the finals with 12:37.

The Greifs reached the playoffs every year between 1986 and 1991 and won their conference title 4 times. But they never made it past the quarter-finals of the German Bowl again.

The Badener Greifs Youth Team was also quite successful during this period. They reached the semi-finals of the Junior Bowl in 1989.

The Greifs missed the Play-Offs in 1992 for the first time and just barely avoided the descent into the 2.nd Bundesliga. Equal on points with the two relegated Stuttgart Scorpions and Darmstadt Diamonds the Greifs only advanced by the better side comparisons. The decline followed a year later in the '93 season.

The team struck bad luck as the 1.st Bundesliga was reduced by one team and they were second last in their group and so they descended into the 2.nd Bundesliga. But even in the '94 season, the descent could not be stopped and the Greifs went down again and for the first time in the club's history, they were only third grade.

After another season of ups and downs in 1995, the Greifs twice reached the second spot in the Regional Liga Mitte. In 1998 the Greifs won their conference championship and were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga.

But after only two seasons, the Greifs descended back into the regional league where the Greifs are still playing today.

Besides the men's team, the Greifs also have a youth team active in the 2009 season, they are competing in the development league.
