Revision as of 10:10, 11 June 2004

Sometimes, we want to delete redirects. Hence this page.

Other Votes for deletion (VfD) pages: copyright violations -- images -- votes for deletion

Deletion guidelines for administrators -- deletion log -- archived delete debates -- undeletion -- blankpages -- shortpages -- move to Wiktionary -- Bad jokes -- pages needing attention -- m:deletionism -- m:deletion management redesign -- Misplaced Pages:Cleanup

List articles to be deleted in this format:

When should we delete a redirect?

To delete a redirect without replacing it with a new article, list it here. This isn't necessary if you just want to replace a redirect with an article: see meta:redirect for instructions on how to do this.

You might want to delete a redirect if one or more of the following conditions is met:

  1. The redirect page makes it unreasonably difficult for users to locate similarly named articles via the search engine. (see meta:searches and redirects for proposals to lessen this impact)
  2. The redirect might cause confusion. For example, if "Adam B. Smith" was redirected to "Andrew B. Smith", because Andrew was accidentally called Adam in one source, this could cause confusion with the article on Adam Smith, so it should be deleted.
  3. The redirect is offensive and/or POV, such as "Joe Bloggs is a Loser" to "Joe Bloggs", unless "Joe Bloggs is a Loser" is discussed in the article.
  4. The redirect makes no sense, such as ] to love
  5. It is a cross-space redirect out of article space, such as one pointing into the User or Misplaced Pages namespace.
  6. If the redirect is broken, meaning it redirects to an article that does not exist, it can be deleted immediately, though you should check that there is not an alternative place it could be appropriately redirected to first.

However, avoid deleting such redirects if:

  1. They have a potentially useful page history. If the redirect was created by renaming a page with that name, and the page history just mentions the renaming, and for one of the reasons above you want to delete the page, copy the page history to the Talk page of the article it redirects to. The act of renaming is useful page history, and even more so if there has been discussion on the page name.
  2. They would aid accidental linking and make the creation of duplicate articles less likely
  3. They aid searches on certain terms.
  4. Someone finds them useful. Hint: If someone says they find a redirect useful, they probably do. You might not find it useful - this is not because the other person is a liar, but because you browse Misplaced Pages in different ways.

For example, redirecting Dubya to George W. Bush might be considered offensive, but the redirect aids accidental linking, makes the creation of duplicate articles less likely, and is useful to some people, so it should not be deleted.

  • Ohosaka redirects to Osaka.
    • Keep unless no one else uses this transliteration, otherwise delete. --Jiang 00:57, 3 May 2004 (UTC)
    • No one else uses it and I can't see it being a common misspelling
    • Keep. anthony (see warning)
      • This is a deliberate misspelling. You'd really have to try to type Ohosaka. In kana (Japanese phonetic script) it's written O-o-sa-ka; there's no ho in it at all. Exploding Boy 23:17, May 3, 2004 (UTC)
    • Delete. I see no reason to keep this. Angela. 01:03, May 15, 2004 (UTC)
    • If the kana is different, may as well delete. Can I do it right now? WhisperToMe 05:52, 21 May 2004 (UTC)

  • Misplaced Pages:Issues to be addressed -> Misplaced Pages:Village pump. Inappropriate redirect. The village pump really isn't the best place to address issues. The page was recently 137kb which makes it inappropriate for addressing anything. Advertising them maybe, but not addressing them. These things should go on meta or the mailing lists. "Clube de Regatas do Flamengo" is the official name of the soccer team.
"Flamengo" is the name most people would know and use to look up or refer to it.
"Mengo", "Mengão", "Fla" and "Mengo" are informal nicknames used by its fans;
but even they would look it up as "Flamengo" -- especially in an English
encyclopedia.
Keep. The article could mention at least some of the nicknames. - User:Docu
"Serra dos Órgãos" is the correct spelling and capitalization for the Brazilian national park.
"Serra dos órgãos" is a capitalization error.
"Serra dos Orgãos" and "Serra dos orgãos" are plausible spelling errors.
"Serra dos Orgaos" and "Serra dos orgaos" are likely to come up in non-ISO texts.
"Organ Hills" would be the correct translation and capitalization.
"Organ hills" is only a capitalization error.
"Organs hills" and "Organs Hills" could be entered by someone not used to English.
All other versions listed above are extremely unlikely.

  • Iredumi redirects to Irezumi. This is a mis-romanization. The "du" romanization (which is itself outdated and rarely used, now usually being given as "zu") is used to represent the Japanese syllable づ, while "irezumi" is written with the character ず, romanized as "zu." This redirect can only serve to create confusion. Exploding Boy 07:00, May 20, 2004 (UTC)

Instead, the reader should be reffered to a more general article on the topic, such as eye surgery. Some of the other laser assisted eye surgery methods are PPK, and LASEK. Presenting this topic as the sole method for laser eye surgery is biased and misleading. At the very least, a disambiguation page should be created.

It should list the eye surgery article for general information and under it there should be the others.

  • Cher (character) - redirects to a movie whose principal character is Cher, but the disambig serves this function better already, so this will only complicate searching (reason 1 above). Andrewa 18:38, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

  • Lawrence Lau - Soap opera actor's name is spelled incorrectly. The correct spelling (and a totally different profile) is found here. TheCustomOfLife 01:08, 6 Jun 2004 (UTC)
  • Sympathy redirects to Suffering. Should it? While one could argue that sympathy is a special form of suffering, I don't believe that this link is a very strong one. I also think there's quite a bit to be said about sympathy itself, particularly with regards to psychology (and related concepts like as empathy). The suffering article doesn't mention sympathy at all. -- Vardion 12:58, 6 Jun 2004 (UTC)

  • Order of Christ was made a redirect to Society of Jesus with the edit summary "redirect to Jesuits, dunno if this is a correct alternative name for them". Later Blanked by Loremaster which is presumably a request for deletion. Angela. 09:24, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)
  • Cycle -> Cycles. This redirection should be the other way around. --Smack 23:15, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)
  • Phoinix -> Phoenix - The former is linked from only one page, which is Topbanana's report on double redirects. Therefore I'm wondering if it's actually necessary to have it. Grunt 16:29, 2004 Jun 9 (UTC)
