Occupy Wall Street, or #occupywallstreet, is a nonviolent demonstration protesting what participants view as negative corporate influence over U.S. politics. It was inspired by the Arab Spring movement and periodic protests tactic. The demonstration started on September 17 2011, and its organizers hope it will last "a few months."
Although the movement is leaderless, it was originally organized by Adbusters magazine. In August 2011, the hacktivist group Anonymous incited its followers to take part in the protest, increasing the attention it received. Other groups have also helped organizing it, such as NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage. The organizers hope to get 20,000 protesters to Wall Street, the financial district of New York City, but Adbusters co-founder Kalle Lasn says he hopes to see as many as 90,000 there.
Prior to the protest's beginning on September 17, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a press conference, "People have a right to protest, and if they want to protest, we'll be happy to make sure they have locations to do it."
The protest has been supported by a few, such as rapper Lupe Fiasco who donated tents for the sit-in and wrote a poem to inspire the protesters, although mainstream anti-corporate activists, such as Michael Moore, haven't said anything on the topic.
