your RfA guidelines

I was looking at your userpage and saw your RfA guidelines and I thought they were quite high. I was quite surprised at "...at least 10 Non-Administrative Closures." I kinda thought that the rest doesn't support any would-be that just wants to focus on one area, which is still a help. I'm curious. Why is your bar where it is? Mysterytrey talk 21:16, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

You're right, they are quite high, but I meet all of them myself. I'll remove it, though. Electric Catfish 22:40, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Do you still require them (the certain areas:50 AIV reports;AFDs; also 10 articles isn't much but if someone is only interesed in 1 thing then...). It really is kinda limiting to only those that edit widespread and diversified. So, why did you have them? (I'm being openminded here.) Also, since you brought up you meeting all of them, any chance of a WP:RfA/Electriccatfish2? I'd support. Mysterytrey talk 23:28, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi! No, I don't require them and I don't have the time to check for each one, although 5,000 edits and 8 months was always my standard. Also, yes, I am having my RFA in January and people have all sorts of checklists that are much more stringent than mine. I personally mainly do anti-vandalism and new page patrolling work, although I do contribute to AFDs and content creation. Best, Electric Catfish 00:39, 24 July 2012 (UTC).
Couldn't help but comment: Great to know about your planned RfA. I for one would definitely support :) Anir1uph | talk | contrib 13:54, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Be sure to have read WP:Advice for RfA candidates first ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 19:08, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Actually, I find the advice there very helpful. Best, Electric Catfish 19:10, 1 August 2012 (UTC).

Did you know?

I just changed a redirect into an article, Yadkin-Pee Dee river basin, and there was one fact that I thought might be interesting and I finally sourced it (the other articles that mention it don't source it but I will fix that tomorrow). "Pilot Mountain was original inspiration for "Mount Pilot" in the 1960s television show The Andy Griffith Show" Since Andy Griffith died recently, and I just recreated the article today, I thought I would mention it to someone familiar with DYK to see if it was worth considering. I've only had one DYK before, back in 08, for Pigs in the City. Drop me a note if you have the time and let me know if you think this is interesting enough. Thanks! Dennis Brown - © Join WER 01:22, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

It seems interesting to me, but I don't have any experience in DYK's. Electric Catfish 11:28, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) DYK check gives it as 8 characters under the limit, but other than that, you should go for it. It would make a nice break from all the olympic hooks we have at the moment.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 11:35, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Ah, I picked your name up as a contact on the front page of WP:DYK as being "actively involved". And thanks Gilderien, I was intending to add some on the geography section today as well. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 11:39, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
You're welcome, and I should probably add myself to that list, thanks for reminding me. You could nom it now and add more while it is nominated, so it is reviewed faster.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 11:53, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
I've reviewed a few submissions, but I don't have any of my own :(. Electric Catfish 12:13, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Next time you create a new article, drop me a line, and I'll be happy to collaborate getting it up to DYK.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 12:17, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
I have added more, cleaned up the disambigs, no red links, added a nice image of Pilot Mnt. I would love it if someone else nom'ed it for DYK, I think the fact is rather interesting myself, as most people aren't aware that that many of the cities and towns in the TV show were based on real towns in this area "Mayberry" = Mount Airy, North Carolina (fun small town to visit, I bring visiting relatives there), Greensboro, North Carolina, etc. I've lived here 20 years now, it is an interesting place, culturally. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 16:12, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
The purely Pilot Mountain fact might be a little tangential...what about.."...that several features within the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin were used as inspiration for locations in the 1960s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show?"--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 16:43, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
I'm making some more edits to it, and, if you like the hook, will nom it later.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 16:58, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
I'll help out, too! Electric Catfish 20:41, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Like I said on my page, I'm easy. I moved to this area 20 years ago, and there are only a couple people working on articles here (out of more than a few million residents, sadly). I might have to work on some other geology related articles next. I stay so busy with other projects, I don't get to edit as much as I would like. You reverted at A Prophet on this issue. What's your thinking? (I'll watch here for your reply.) --Ring Cinema (talk) 22:10, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Please provide a link to the diff. I probably reverted it because it was unsourced. Electric Catfish 22:31, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
No, it was in the plot summary for A Prophet. --Ring Cinema (talk) 22:56, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't really make much of a difference either way, but I've reverted it back to origin. Best, Electric Catfish 22:58, 26 July 2012 (UTC).

I wanted to notify you that I have added a reason to the proposed deletion tag you added to the article. I assume you intended to add the tag questioning the subject's notability. Cheers! SwisterTwister talk 01:36, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Stone Key Partners

You just rejected my article after another editor reviewed it, seemingly approved it and asked me to resubmit. See notes below from Txcrossbow. Hello, James. I will take a look at it this weekend and run the references, etc. I admire your tenacity! After I review the article again, I will let you know so that you can either re-submit or make changes. Txcrossbow (talk) 15:36, 20 July 2012 (UTC) Please re-submit. Be patient on the review as there is a heavy backlog right now. Txcrossbow (talk) 06:14, 21 July 2012 (UTC) I will repeat the name note that I left for Stella...IF YOU HAVE GUIDELINES AND RULES, IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO FOLLOW THEM. I'm wondering how I can remedy the following issue and get my first article published. Thank you very much for your help! "What you can do: Add citations (see Misplaced Pages:Referencing for beginners) to secondary reliable sources that are entirely independent of the subject."

I've added two links to the New York Times (both of which are articles where the company is the subject of the article) plus links to Bloomberg and four links to Reuters. These are all very reliable, national, secondary sources and entirely independent from the subject. This bank is the largest Aerospace and Defense boutique investment bank in the world and is certainly notable to a lot of people. Based on the criteria here (http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:CORP), I provide the following arguments for notability.

1. Depth of Coverage- The New York Times, Wall St. Journal, Bloomberg, Reuters, the Washington Post and numerous others certainly feel that the company is notable. They have written significant articles on the company recently both on-line and in print publications. 2. Audience - these publications are national publications. 3. Interdependence of Sources- none of the cited sources (exception press release) have any relation to the company. Thank you very much for your time. http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Stone_Key_Partners — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesr1978 (talk • contribs) 19:19, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

This is James again- you asked me to resubmit, which I did. Then someone else reviewed and declined. This is sort of getting ridiculous. Do I get a new reviewer ever time? How is that possibly helpful / efficient? Do I just resubmit until I find someone that agrees that an organization that is the topic of articles in the NY Times, Wall St Journal, Reuters, Bloomberg, etc. is notable. This seems arbitrary and illogical. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesr1978 (talkcontribs) 18:32, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi! First of all, the article seems good now. Please re-submit it and than ping me and than I will accept it. Also, it depends. You will usually, but not always get a different reviewer. There are about 100 or so of us, and we are all experienced Misplaced Pages editors. Electric Catfish 20:03, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello Electric Catfish. Thank you for your help! I do not see the button to resubmit the article like I did the first two times. Please let me know how to go about re-submitting when it has been put into the declined category. Sincerely - James Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesr1978 (talkcontribs) 13:50, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

158.255.7.244

Hi. I declined to block this person for spamming. Normally we required the person to have received and ignored 4 or 5 warnings before we block. Obviously if they've used other accounts, then we count those warnings to.

Personally, as an admin who's done a lot of spam cleanup in the past, I prefer to not block spammers -- it's easier to track their behavior and spam domains if you don't force them to move to a new sockpuppet account. I find that blacklisting their domains is much more effective. (Note that we also give them multiple warnings before blacklisting). Blacklisting is potentially devastating to their domain since there are indications the search engines sometimes look at our blacklist when deciding whether to blacklist them in search engine results.

I encourage you to check out Wikiproject Spam and report spammers and their domains to the project's talk page using the templates there.

I also recommend you warn spammers on their talk pages and use the special domain-tracking templates Wikiproject Spam uses -- it helps tracking. See what I've done on the editor's talk page.

Most importantly -- thanks so much for looking out for spam! I hope you'll keep at it.

Regards, --A. B. 00:12, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

I also declined to block the unrelated IP 83.149.8.164 -- same reasons. --A. B. 00:19, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi! I've reported about 25 spammers. They all trip filters and apparently, spambots don't need to be warned. They usually also end up being open proxies. I deal more with anti-vandalism than spam, but if I see it, I'll report it. Best, Electric Catfish 11:53, 30 July 2012 (UTC).

Welcome to the Teahouse!

Hi KeilanaElectriccatfish! Thank you for signing up to be a future host at the Teahouse. Well, great news - the future is here: we'd love you to be a Teahouse host! Teahouse hosts do more than just answer questions. A few things we'd love to see you do as a Teahouse host:

  • First, declare your Hostness! Add yourself to the Host page! This page is where new editors and your fellow hosts can learn about you and get in touch with you easily if needed. By signing up here you declare that you know how to serve up a great cup of tea. Add yourself here.
  • Invite new users with our invite guide. Please invite new users to the Teahouse! At that guide you'll find some tips on how to invite. It's super important; we have plenty of Wikipedians answering questions, but not enough asking the questions!
  • Visit the tips page. The tips page provides you some basic tips on how to engage with visitors at the Teahouse. We have a special way of doing things - unlike other areas of Misplaced Pages! (Such as greeting new editors with a simple "Hi!" and being as easy to understand and friendly as possible.)
  • Join the conversation by participating on the host lounge talk pages. We also have an IRC channel now for hosts to get to know one another, develop your skills, and eventually the channel will serve as an additional help space for new editors!
  • To visit the IRC channel: #wikipedia-teahouse (Feel free to ask me for help if you're having trouble connecting!)
  • Participate in developing the Teahouse further by getting involved in phase two. Learn more here.

I'm so happy that you volunteered to lend a hand at the Teahouse. I look forward to following your contributions and invitations, and your assistance in making the Teahouse a great and warm place for new Wikipedians. See you there :) SarahStierch (talk) 20:57, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Would you be willing to help me with this NPP backlog? A month ago, there was a large amount of new articles and I couldn't review all of them. Articles older than a month won't appear and I've been targeting unreviewed articles and users who haven't been welcomed yet. If you can at least help me get to a week ahead, I'd appreciate it. Images and copyright

Hey! I see that my question has become very popular, as other users have asked it either :) Well i learned about the creative commons copyrights not much time ago: Images must allow commercial use and derivative works to be eligible for Commons. So licenses lyke cc-by-2.0 and cc-by-nc-2.0 are not free enough to be uploaded, as De728631 wrote on his answer (which is completely right). I would refer you to this: Commons:Licensing for more info about the copyright of media. —Hahc21 02:07, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

It's an interesting question Hahc. I've asked it on my adoption course for a year or so, and I think I've had a total of 2 (out of about 30) people get it right. It's a mean mean question (which is great for an RfA). Catfish, you may want to have a look at User:Worm That Turned/Adopt/Copyright which helps a bit on copyright in general. Catfish, you are very much needed here, Your Enormous contributions are well appreciated. The thread at ANI is discussing the prevalence of such incidents in general. Please do not get offended, some editors were concerned about it, hence the discussion, Hope you will reconsider your decision. regards --DBigXray 12:25, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Dude: toughen up. The world is a rough place, and so is this wiki. Stick to your guns when you feel you're right: don't run away from the situation. Doc talk 12:41, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

The thing you should have done is to accept the (rather constructive) criticism by the other editors and use that to make the necessary adjustments and improve. Sometimes, the best way to improve yourself is by making mistakes. --MuZemike 13:13, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Guys, thanks. You guys have all been here for much longer than I have. However, Misplaced Pages is was my hobby. I had only good intentions and I feel as if the ANI report is smashing all of the work I've done here to pieces. Electric Catfish 13:24, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

You feel that way, sure. But I understand (see below) that it should not have happened there to start with. Your work stays even if you leave. Please consider to stay also. - I was close to leaving a year ago, I know the feeling. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:31, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I really appreciate it. Yes, I'll return in a few months when this all gets cleared up. Best, Electric Catfish 13:33, 3 August 2012 (UTC).
A few months? Will it really take you that long to get over it? It's cleared up. Get on with what you were doing before this. That's a non-admin order! Doc talk 13:37, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
I'm very upset that other editors perceived my good-faith actions as "malicious". Also, there's no policy that says that non-admins can't do what I'm doing. I think that an RFC on this issue would be great. Best, Electric Catfish 13:40, 3 August 2012 (UTC).
No one in that thread used the word "malicious". You are overreacting by retiring for a few months, but you seem to have already decided what your plan is. Good luck. Doc talk 13:45, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Hey, Electriccatfish2. I am very sorry that you have put up a "retired" banner over this affair. Please accept my apologies if any of my remarks were too harsh. -- Dianna (talk) 15:27, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Same here, Electriccatfish2, you don't need to leave over an AN/I report. The best thing to do, as I'm sure others will agree, is to use it as a learning experience to make yourself a better editor. Acalamari 17:01, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Just to let you know that (1) I appreciated your message re Savannah Metro Police Dept., and hopefully we can develop an article on the lines of the excellent Charleston, West Virginia Police article, and (2) I hope you agree to stay with WP; Misplaced Pages can be frustrating -- petty insults, admin honchos strutting their stuff, etc. -- but that's to be expected in a big, bureaucratic monster like WP. Hope you will stay for a while.Mason.Jones (talk) 18:04, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Don't let it bug you.

Don't let an overblown report at ANI, that should have been handled elsewhere, drive you away. Seriously. It can be maddening, but just take a day off and try to overlook it if you can. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 13:03, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Mentoring

After a bit of a chat by email, I'm under the impression that Catfish won't be gone for ever, and he's agreed to mentoring when he gets back. If anyone wants to chat with me over the matter, you know where to find me. Worm(talk) 14:23, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, Dave! Electric Catfish 14:27, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Hey Catfish. Just to let you know that I've fired up a mentoring page here. There's also an associated talk page, which we can chat about anything you like here. See you soon! Worm(talk) 11:29, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Dude

Just no. Facts all come with points of view. - Talking Heads, Cross-eyed And Painless. Wait a bit, sure... See how much you miss Misplaced Pages. :) But I fully expect you back! Theopolisme TALK 14:28, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! After many email, I've decided to come back, but not now. Dave (WTT) has offered to be my mentor. Also, I put myself as inactive on the status page. Best, Electric Catfish 14:30, 3 August 2012 (UTC).
Hey Catfish, why you took it so serious? Well, i dunno, but if i'm still here after an unsuccessful RFA (and up and running) i think you can do the same. ANI reports don't damage your reputation (unless you have violated the policies, of course). You just did what you felt was right, although some considered it over-reacting. I hope you won't leave and say editin here. WP is a rough place, yes, but if you know how to handle it, it can be an amazing journey. —Hahc21 14:37, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I've spoken to Dave (Worm) over email and he's convinced me to stay and offered to be my mentor. I was proud that you didn't retire after your rough RFA. Electric Catfish 14:41, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

See You Soon

Hello My Friend,

Being in the cross hairs at ANI really sucks, but I hope that you have learned from your experience and will use it to the good. Remember that you are a really great editor, and we want and NEED you to stick around. Take as much time as you need. Come back refreshed and ready to do all the great stuff you've been doing, PLEASE! Thank you very, very much for the good work you've done and for the good work you will do in the future. Cheers, Ebikeguy (talk) 18:08, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

You'll be welcome when you return

You've been very helpful on the Misplaced Pages project and will continue to be when you come back. --Jprg1966  18:11, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Message from SwisterTwister

We shouldn't allow incidents affect our editing and time here. I understand how stressful incidents can be, I experienced stress during my RfA. At times, taking a wikibreak may help clear our mind. Regardless if you want to return again or not, I wish you well. SwisterTwister talk 03:07, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

That's nothing compared to the stress you'll get if you do one day become an admin ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:16, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Rather then start yet another thread, I'll just piggy back on the last one that is currently open. :) I agree with the many users above that you should not let the ANI thread kill your hobby. We have all had our @#$@ moments at one time or another here (even if only internally expressed) Instead take on board the constructive points that were raised, maybe take with a grain of salt those that might have seemed a bit harsh but valid. Maybe take some time off as you suggested you might. Sometimes a few days away can put this place into a more liberating perspective. At the end of the day day it is just a website. An important and professional website, but not a place that should be causing you to feel distraught. Take care EC and I hope to collaborate with you again in the not too distant future :) Kindly Calmer Waters 04:41, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Five

Stop by for a tasty glass of wiki-iced tea at the Teahouse, today!

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteer who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
  • More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
  • Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
  • New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
  • Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Re: Retirement

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for the words of support and encouragement I have received over these few days. I see that I am wanted here and heave decided to return. I'm going to thank everyone who posted a message about my retirement personally this week, but I would like to begin by expressing my thanks for all of your support. Also, one of the points that was brought up at AN/I was that I disregarded warnings. I big to differ. JBW's note was politely written about not using the (Non-administrator comment) template at AIV to identify myself as a non-admin. Ponyo's comment was about using templates to show that I agree with the report. I have acknowledges both comments. Also, I hope to continue contributing to AN/I, UAA, and AIV by making helpful comments, such as pointing out that a s user has not been warned, but I do not intend on making decisions, such as removing reports. Also, I would like to point out to everyone that non-admins are allowed to help out in WP: PERM/C, and I do that myself. Lastly, I would like to thank Worm That Turned for offering to mentor me and I hope that I will be welcomed back into the community of Misplaced Pages. I look forward to collaborating with you all in the future, and wish you all of the best. Electric Catfish 22:59, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Good Great to see that you decided to return. Hopefully you can put this behind you quickly and continue to make good contributions! AutomaticStrikeout 23:21, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! Electric Catfish 23:21, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Great to see that you decided to un-retire! A similar thing happened to me last month; sometimes things can just get overwhelming. But it's always nice to see how much people appreciate you and want you around. Statυs (talk) 00:49, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Why...

...are you responding here? It says quite clearly at the top of the section that only admins who work in RFPERM are to respond - it's intended to gauge if ADMINS feel that additional hands are necessary. dangerouspanda 12:09, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

I have removed my vote from the page. Please note that I only voted after 2 non-admins (Mabul and Riley Huntley) voted. Best, Electric Catfish 21:11, 6 August 2012 (UTC).
