Delete entry about me please!
Hi,
My biography was put on wikipedia without my permission by a gallery. I have attempted to remove it myself but got a warning. I only talk to the gallery via my lawyer and they refuse to de-link or do anything to remove me. PLEASE HELP by completely removing me!

Many thanks, Ireneferg (talk) 03:57, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Your permission is not required for us to have a biography about you; however, this article happens to appear to violate our policy on biographies of living persons and is probably not notable enough for inclusion, so I have proposed deletion. However, if sufficient sources are found, the article may be kept.--Jasper Deng (talk) 04:10, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- I think Notability is confirmed. I found 6 web mentions of Ms. Ferguson and 7 news articles through google and placed them all on the talk page. I restored the article with the proposed, since a proposed delete on an empty page is sort of weird. I also don't find anything that violates BLP except for possibly the birthday. I know we've deleted month and day on request from the subject of the article. I found the birth year in an unrelated reference.Naraht (talk) 04:35, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)Update: Someone found sufficient sources, so the article can likely be kept. If you wish to voice your concerns, you may go to the online ticket request service.--Jasper Deng (talk) 04:37, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Please read about ownership of articles and the rules in Biographies of Living Persons. Misplaced Pages uses referencable work, which generally means that information in articles is somewhere out on the web or in a newspaper or someplace similar. Please take a look at the article and where this information is available to see if something not referenced is there. The month and day of your birth have been removed, that isn't appropriate to include unless very publicly available elsewhere. Removing Citation and Referencing notification
I am very new to editing and I have been doing some work on different suburbs of Auckland, NZ, in particular Kingsland, New Zealand. Before I began it had the Citation and Referencing notification:
This article does not cite any sources. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. Find sources: "Help desk" – news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR (July 2010) (Learn how and when to remove this message) |
at the top of the page. I have since added content and referenced my sources. I was wondering if it is within Misplaced Pages etiquette for me to remove the notification myself or if I need to request for an administrator to reevaluate the page? Researchassistant101 (talk) 04:09, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

- Please remain calm and try to understand what is happening here. The content of the article is well sourced and factually accurate. Your attempts to change the content is resulting in removal of correctly sourced material and so your changes are being reverted. We, as editors are happy to work with you to adjust any incorrect content provided you can provide reliable sources indicating a difference. Can I strongly advise you to stop making changes to the live article and instead post the issues you have with its content on the articles talk page (Talk:Lutalo_Muhammad) then other editors can inspect your proposed changes and comment or include them. Tattoo Artist list, adding an artist
Hi, I would like to add an Italian tattoo artist Tom Tattoo, real name Tommaso Buglioni, one of "the fathers" of modern tattoo art in Italy, born in 1961 and working since 1982. He has long worked in the USA, partecipating to several conventions in the State, as, for instance, The NYC Tattoo Convention since his first edition in late '90s. He has a page in the Italian Misplaced Pages: can I add him to the list even if he has not an English page? How can I manage it? Thanks--Giulia Visci (talk) 16:21, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- That's kind of a complicated question. There's no rule that requires a list item to have a page associated with it, but editing is by consensus and other editors may object unless you can at least provide a reliable source, as defined by Misplaced Pages, which says that he's sufficiently important to be included. You might try adding him with a link to the Italian Misplaced Pages article in this form ] but I'm not at all sure that will be sufficient since there may be sourcing and copyright problems with the Italian article. Your best choice may just be to wait to see if anyone responds to the suggestion that you've made on the list's talk page. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 16:50, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your kind answer! What about adding a list of English language publications mentioning Tom Tattoo as a reliable source? If you have a look to the Tattoo Artist List you'll see it is a table: hoe do I add a name to the list? Thanks --Giulia Visci (talk) 07:39, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- Start with Talk:List of tattoo artists. I have so much trouble adding stuff to tables I'm not really the one to ask. I usually mess up the table when I try.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 20:02, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Adding a Picture

I am trying to upload a picture of our Carassauga page but can't seem to get past all the questions being asked. Please let me know the best way to upload a picture of our Festival to our page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carassauga (talk • contribs) 16:32, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but your username violates our policies against editing from a role account and you will probably be blocked from editing for that reason before you are able to upload any photo. If you establish an individual account, then you need to know that the questions must be properly answered in order to confirm that Misplaced Pages will accept the photo for use here. Once you've established an individual account, you might post here again to say which questions are giving you trouble. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 17:01, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- BTW, it's not your page - the article belongs to Misplaced Pages. See WP:OWN and WP:COI for some guidance. Roger (talk) 09:06, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Minor edit check box is checked
Have I missed something? Noticed today that the minor edit box is by default checked. I am sure this is new, isn't it? How do I "uncheck" it permanently? - Isn't the setting for making every edit minor, somewhere in you user preferences? Astronaut (talk) 18:13, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
@ User talk:Floating Boat ... Perhaps you should. It is not obvious to me.
@ Astronaut Thanks, I thought that too, but cannot find it anywhere.
To all: Please can someone help me!
-- Gareth Griffith-Jones/The Welsh Buzzard 19:19, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- The checkbox before "This is a minor edit" is checked? You're not getting it confused with the box following minor edit, which is for "Watch this page", are you? That box is checked on pages you are already watching, and there is a setting to always check it in your preferences. - Purplewowies (talk) 20:21, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
@ Purplewowies Thanks. I am fully aware of the 'Watch this page' check box to the right of the minor edit box, and I have checked in My preferences the appropriate check box : 'Add pages and files I edit to my watchlist'.
- I believe that option in preferences was removed some time ago - too many people left it checked, and marked everything as minor. Do you remember enabling that option at any point in time? If you did, I guess it's possible that it remained enabled when the preference got removed, although I thought they'd taken steps to avoid that. If you didn't, then you may want to ask at WP:VPT for help. Hersfold non-admin 20:22, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)
@ User:Hersfold Yes, I had a sneaky feeling that I had read something about it being made unavailable for that reason.
I certainly never enabled it.
I shall have to keep an eye on it. It seems to appear checked on some edits and not checked on others without any contribution from me. -- Gareth Griffith-Jones/The Welsh Buzzard 20:47, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Aha, I found a way to check. Go to this link: that will list all the preferences you currently have set in a machine-readable format, which usually isn't useful for us, but the benefit here is that it includes all the preferences we've hidden from the normal screen. Once you go there, make sure that your username appears on the page, and then search (Ctrl+F on Windows) for "minordefault". If you see minordefault="1", that means that somehow your preferences are still set to mark all edits as minor by default. I can give you instructions on how to turn that off if needed, but it's a little more complicated. Hersfold non-admin 20:31, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm. If you're sure it's the minor edit box that's being checked and not the "watch this page" one, I haven't the faintest idea why this would be happening, and I'm certainly not seeing it. Is there a particular page that seems to consistently have the box checked when you try to edit it? Hersfold non-admin 20:49, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- I have done your check on "minordefault" and it shows =0
As I said above, {{edit conflict}}, I shall watch it carefully. Many, many thanks for giving so much thought and help. Cheers! -- Gareth Griffith-Jones/The Welsh Buzzard 21:05, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- I have done your check on "minordefault" and it shows =0
- Some settings can make minor edit be checked for some types of edits. I see you use Twinkle. See Misplaced Pages:Twinkle/Preferences. Do you use the Vector skin? YMCA Camp Minikani
Good afternoon! I was wondering who I would need to contact to update some information about the YMCA Camp Minikani Misplaced Pages page.
Most notably the points in bold below. Could you please direct me to the correct person?
YMCA Camp Minikani is a residential summer camp located along the shores of Lake Amy Belle in Hubertus, Wisconsin, in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. YMCA was established in 1919 by the Milwaukee YMCA. Minikani is also home to one of the cleanest lakes in Wisconsin, Amy Belle. At its conception, Minikani served as a summer camp for boys living in the Milwaukee Area who came for two weeks to learn camp skills and participated in competitive athletic events. Minikani has since transformed to a co-ed camp that has shifted from competitive activities to challenge by choice to eliminate the emotional pressure of competitions. To this day, Minikani offers its traditional summer programs, Explorer programs, Leadership in Training programs, as well as Day Camp and Equestrian Camps. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.48.118.66 (talk) 18:48, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hello! You are more than welcome to be bold and edit the YMCA Camp Minikani article yourself. You don't need any permission from us in order to edit the information. Cheers, SassyLilNugget (talk) 20:03, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- However, your contribution will be enormously more valuable if it references at least one indepedent reliable source for the information, otherwise a reader has no way of knowing whether it is correct or not. --ColinFine (talk) 16:05, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Am I doing this right? and do I have access to actually posting it? I'd like to add it ... but I'm not sure how. Thanks so much in advance for your help! I appreciate it! Music4ibc (talk) 18:53, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Unless you think you can get the copyright holder to grant permission (and not just for Misplaced Pages to use it), don't upload the image. Wikimedia Commons only accepts images released under a free license. If the image is copyrighted, non-free content, don't upload it here either, as using non-free images of living persons is unacceptable in most cases. Using a caricature in the person's infobox might be disparaging and probably should be avoided anyway. PleaseStand (talk) 19:34, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
PCRL
Dear Friend,
There is a Misplaced Pages topic of "PCRL", and I would like to add additional entries under this title that is not related to the entry already under this title. Is this appropriate, and how should I do that? Specifically, I am the founding director of the Powertrain Control Research Laboratory (PCRL) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This research group was founded in 1989, continues to thrive today, and conducts important research and development, and trains engineering students for the transporation and other industries. We have also won a number of important international awards, and have several patents to our credit. You can review PCRL's history and activities at: http://powertrain.engr.wisc.edu
Please let me know how I can add content to Misplaced Pages about this group (PCRL). Thank you for your consideration. Best regards. 2607:F388:1082:FFF4:53B:379D:EA47:3AF3 (talk) 19:34, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- You can learn how to create an article at WP:YFA. Since you are affiliated with the group, you should also read about how to handle a conflict-of-interest at WP:COI. It might be better if you have someone else create the article. You can request that at WP:RA. RudolfRed (talk) 19:43, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- And to explicitly answer the first clause in your question: no, it's not appropriate. Each Misplaced Pages article treats only one topic, so your organization would have to have an article of its own, presumably titled with the full name of the organization. A hatnote at PCRL would then be added to direct readers searching for the organization to the correct article. Deor (talk) 21:18, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Tank Overhaul
Dear Sirs, I have been watching, for some time now, with great interest, your program "Tank Overhaul". This subject has great interest to me, as my father served in World War Two in a tank batallion. Some of the programs that you televized have no ending. The Sherman Tank, that was cut in two, for example had no ending. Also, the German Panther had no conclusion. "What happened to these projects?" I am greatly interested in finding out. Are there any DVDs that I can purchase regarding these projects? Any help you can supply would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for you time...JD. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.24.126.199 (talk) 02:27, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Misplaced Pages, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Misplaced Pages itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.Template:Z25 - Purplewowies (talk) 02:37, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

- Don't put spaces at the beginning of lines; leading spaces have a special meaning on Misplaced Pages. If you really want to indent a paragraph, put a colon (:) at the beginning of the line. —teb728 t c 06:32, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- But the material you are trying to upload has a far worse problem than formatting: I'm sorry to have to tell you that Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia; it is not a web hosting service for Soroptomist's content. And if I understand correctly, you uploaded a copyrighted article from a Soroptomists site; that would be a copyright violation. —teb728 t c 07:24, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Turning off the watchlist pop-up messages
When I add a page to my watchlist by clicking the little star next to the search box, I get a pop-up message with this text (approximately):
- The page"Misplaced Pages:Help desk" has been added to your watchlist, which will...
I understand that this useful for newcomers, but I would very much like to get rid of this message, partly because it's a bit annoying in itself but mostly because the pop-up message tends to cover the "View history" button.
Does anybody know if there is a setting for turning off these pop-up messages, and if there isn't how I could ask the MediaWiki developers to consider adding such a feature?

There are several cases where the same fact appears in more than one article, so when it changes it has to be updated twice or more. The case I'm looking at is the set of historical lists of ambassadors of the United Kingdom to other countries. There's also a page listing current ambassadors to all countries, so when there's a new ambassador, two pages have to be updated, which typically means that the list of current ambassadors gets out-of-date or inaccurate. So I've begun to put in code to transclude the name of the current ambassador from one page to the other. See List of Ambassadors of the United Kingdom to Afghanistan and the entry for Afghanistan in List of heads of missions of the United Kingdom. Is this a good (or at least reasonable) way of doing it?
I've used Template:Onlyinclude rather than using bare onlyinclude and /onlyinclude tags, in case in future another piece of text from the page needs to be transcluded, although it does make the code more complicated. The code could be more straightforward, and clearer, if Labeled Section Transclusion was installed on the English Misplaced Pages, but it isn't, although it's been proposed from time to time (for example).
Thanks! ... Stanning (talk) 11:37, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- if you are using transclusion it will remove the need to repeat and reduce article size but increase server load. i strongly suggest using onlyinclde tags as the template could cause problems. no data isnt a problem you jsut put it wihtin the onlyinclude tags i use on tv episode show list all the time. although i cant see where the trasnclusion acutally is. it seems like only the current ambassor is using trasnclusion to which makes it pointless using it just for one person as both pages will need updated anyway unless you do it in reverse to what oyu have jsut nowAndrewcrawford (talk - contrib) 11:50, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. You can see where the transclusion is by looking at the code. The current ambassador is transcluded from the "list of ambassadors" page to the "heads of missions" page, thus only the former page needs to be updated. My intenetion is to repeat this transclusion from all the other "list of ambassadors" pages eventually.
Can you point to an example of what you've done with TV episode show lists? ... Stanning (talk) 14:25, 27 October 2012 (UTC)- I can see the value of this function, but is it a function that the average editor would understand and use correctly? It is possible that a relatively new editor could go into an article or a table with intentions to make a valuable edit, see the coding and be discouraged from making the edit. Your idea make sense, but will it have side effects? → Michael J Ⓣ Ⓒ Ⓜ 14:29, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- That's what I'm not sure of, and why I asked the question here before continuing. As I said above, installation of Labeled Section Transclusion would make it much easier for the average editor. However, it's because the average editor has failed to update the "List of heads of missions" page that I looked for this possible solution! ... Stanning (talk) 11:37, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. You can see where the transclusion is by looking at the code. Hi, I'm new to Misplaced Pages and while talking to a Canadian friend who resides in Vancouver, he told me of a renowned Canadian actor, young actor, who is member of the Vancouver Masonic Lodge, and I think it's Cory Monteith, so I added Category:Freemasons to his article. Is it right? Please consider I'm new to Misplaced Pages. Thank you. Iowafromiowa (talk) 16:24, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- No it isn't. We don't add categories to articles because we think that they belong there, based vaguely on what someone told us. Articles are based on published reliable sources, not hearsay. AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:27, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Understood, I'm sorry. Iowafromiowa (talk) 16:35, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- And even if the information represented by a categorisation is reliably sourced, it is not necessarily appropriate: if a person has made a public point of personal facts such as their religion, their sexual orientation, their politics, their membership of particular societies, then it is almost certainly appropriate to mention them in an article about the person, and add the article to the appropriate category. But if they themselves have not discussed this matter publicly, or only mentioned it in passing, many Wikipedians feel that it is not appropriate for an article to mention it, or to be put in a corresponding category. This question is sometimes contentious, though. --ColinFine (talk) 16:15, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Categories in edit window
I just noticed that categories started to disappear from the bottom of the edit window, only to pop up again at some time (making it impossible to control the category display during preview). A glitch/lag? Btw, odd things are going on in the Category:Internet advertising and Category:Domain name system, where category suppression of User:Adrianeu's namespace doesn't work (the former category is not even displayed in the edit window). Brandmeister 17:00, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- Fixed. Some categories were added by {{Domain parking}} so I removed transclusion of that template. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:23, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Sock puppet suspicion
We have a discussion on an article's talk page. Basically, all "old" WP editors say one thing, and two new editors don't agree. The only contributions of both these editors are the remarks on the talk page. I suspect sock puppetry. Now, I really like Assume good faith and Don't bite the newcomers adn Civility, and I wonder if it is okay to voice my suspicions on this talk page, or if I should hold back a bit, just to prevent this discussion from becoming ugly and personal. What are your experiences with sock puppetry? What is the right moment to say that you wonder if two editors are the same person? Lova Falk talk 17:47, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Ipad app
One more question now that I'm here. :) In the middle of a section about a remedial program, an editor has written: The iPad app xxx is designed to offer training of this part, including a source. Is this good content for an article, or should it be removed? And if it should be removed, which guideline should I quote when I motivate the removal? Lova Falk talk 18:06, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Two articles on the same person?
I just finished revising the article on Thomas Courtenay (1432-1461), Earl of Devon, adding references and in-line citations, and then found what appears to be another article on the same person.
This is the article I just finished revising:
Thomas Courtenay, 6th Earl of Devon
This is the duplicate article in its unrevised state:
Thomas Courtenay, 14th Earl of Devon
I think the duplication of articles arose because there's disagreement among reliable sources as to whether the Courtenay Earls of Devon were of a second creation, and should therefore be numbered starting from 1st Earl, or whether they weren't a new creation, and therefore should be numbered in sequence from the Redvers Earls of Devon. There seem to have been some redirection of articles in the past to have them conform to one or the other of these two numbering systems, thus resulting in two articles on Thomas Courtenay (1432-1461), who was 14th Earl under the one numbering system, and 6th Earl under the other numbering system.
Something should be done to regularize the numbering of the Earls of Devon, since it now seems (see the Talk page), that there's agreement the Courtenay Earls of Devon should be numbered consecutively after the Revers Earls of Devon.
However that's a more long-term problem, and the immediate problem seems to be that the duplicate unrevised article should be deleted (at least that would be my suggestion), i.e. this article should be deleted:
Thomas Courtenay, 14th Earl of Devon
That would also involve redirecting the link on the disambiguation page for Thomas Courtenay.
Help with this would be much appreciated. NinaGreen (talk) 20:03, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- I would strongly advise redirecting the new article's title to the old title. Then, revise the old article, taking advantage of the information you found for the new article, but thus preserving the long edit history of the old article as well as the new. That's pretty much standard procedure in a situation like this. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:15, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm pretty confused.:-) I don't actually know which was the new page, and which the old page. All I know is that I spent a lot of time today revising one of the two articles on the same person, only to find, after I'd finished, that there was another article on the same person.
- I did change the link on the disambiguation page so that it directs to the article I revised. That way Misplaced Pages readers will get the latest version. But beyond that, I'm unsure what to do. I went to Move page, and found this:
- Note that the page will not be moved if there is already a page at the new title, unless it is empty or a redirect and has no past edit history.
It sounds as though I might muck things up if I attempted a move. Maybe I should just leave things be for the time being. NinaGreen (talk) 02:22, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

- It's called an "infobox", and which infobox you use depends on what kind of subject. For a company like IBM for instance, the infobox is {{Infobox company}}. —teb728 t c 21:27, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Request for an article to be written on Tom van der Loo
Hello, I'm looking for a full page on Tom van der Loo who founded is own software company 'Holland Automation International' in the 1980's in The Netherlands, which grew internationally and made a big impact on the software world in that period. I'm doing a paper on this subject and have found many different articles on him in Dutch and English but not 1 page which compiles everything. Including when he sold HAI (holland automation international) and founded SEagull Software and was in the board. and what the companies there did.
I can provide the links to the articles that already exist, but I'm not a good writer and don't want to make mistakes on a Misplaced Pages page, so my question is: Is is it possible to ask someone else to write the article on Mister Tom van der Loo?
I've also found one old schoolbook with a 5 page interview with him, but can't find it on the internet, and also found an article in the Dutch magazine 'Quote' about him being one of the largest private ship owners in The Netherlands, but it's an old article.
Can anyone help me research and compile a well written wikipedia page?

Page out of date
Misplaced Pages page on me is either a spoof or woefully outdated by 10 years, and my central scholarly interests are mis- or under-represented. You just have to google my name to see what areas I work in and things I publish. This is so embarrassing as you now give a short description of me in google search on right hand side. Why don't you display this as my OBITUARY? Either you delete Misplaced Pages entry on me or do something about getting it corrected. Discouraged ...
I am new to Misplaced Pages. I have attempted to write my first article. It was approved after long and detailed corrections ~ mainly with the help from several experienced reviewers and contributors ~ to whom I am grateful. However, since the article has been approved, I find that there is a large popularity of reviewers out there that seem to dominate their time with finding what's wrong with an article and placing it on disclaimer probation. I find this disheartening ~ many tell you what's wrong and walk away, without giving much aid or help in rectifying the problems they say were reasons for deletion. To the unexperienced reader using Misplaced Pages, seeing this disclaimer at the very beginning can be off-putting at best. It seems to discredit an otherwise truthful and factual article. Even though other reviewers (who added in its creation) have all approved of its tone and content. I want to write more articles, in the same fashion and field, but I am so discouraged with the reception from reviewers on Misplaced Pages that I wonder: is it worth my time and effort? everyone has an opinion, and they all say they are doing what they are doing for the good of the system ... using rules and regulations to backup what they feel is correct and good. (sigh) ... can't we just all get along? Thank you for your help in advance. Here is the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/Aaron_Robinson_%28composer%29 PS if you find something wrong, please don't place it up for deletion ... please work with me to fix it. I know that by bringing attention to my article, I am asking for more trouble, but I truly believe in the good of this system. Sincerely Impromp2Music (talk) 15:35, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- I've gone through the article - the biggest problem I found was the "Further reading" lists which simply repeated the References list so I removed them. Most of the "problem tags" were imho unjustified so I took them out too. The only "major" issue remaining is the "External links" list is excessive - the IMDB links should go - IMDB is user edited so not reliable. Only the most important directly relevant websites should be in such a list - try to limit it to a maximum of 3 or 4 links. Roger (talk) 16:35, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- Just wanted to touch bases here. The Aaron Robinson (composer) article has not been placed on probation. Various issues with the article have simply been identified. Nobody has placed it for deletion. Impromp2Music, you've been offered quite a bit of help by other editors, but unfortunately, the help was offered by new and inexperienced editors. My apologies there. As stated before, it is important for you to review the guidelines yourself, rather than requesting that others simply do the work for you. Dodger67, please refrain from removing maintenance templates without addressing and fixing the issues identified. If you have a question with the issue, simply contact the editor for clarification. Note also that while IMDb may not be used to establish notability, the site is perfectly permissible as an external link. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 16:58, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) The article you started isn't "on probation" (there is a concept of article probation here, but it refers to something different.) Anybody, you included, may apply a tag to any article, and anybody can query it if they feel it is unjustified or remove it once the issue has been properly resolved. Moving tagging to the talk page is unlikely to attract much support. Misplaced Pages articles vary hugely in quality; tags alert users to issues that should be taken into account when reading them, and would not be seen if they were on the talk page.
- Please remember that this article isn't "yours", and try not to take tags personally. Nobody is obliged to fix problems rather than simply pointing them out, although fixing them is regarded as good practice. The best way to banish a tag is either to discuss it with the tagging editor and reach consensus that it can be removed, or to fix the problem it highlights.
- Getting a draft to mainspace via the optional review process is an achievement, but mainspace is the beginning of the development process for that article, not the end. Starting articles and getting them to stick is actually really hard, particularly for new users, which is why the review process exists and can seem so arduous. Improving existing articles can be a good way of becoming more familiar with policy and procedure as you learn your way around here and develop your editing skills. Good luck and happy editing. - Karenjc 17:05, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clarifications. I am puzzled as to why two very important references were removed from the article? Whoever went in and completely reconstructed the article seems to have made it less credible now than when it was first approved. The very publication "New Grove" book on composers was the reference for many of what is now being asked for citations: where he was born, who he studied with, performed on and off Broadway (which is odd that a citation is needed, when in the very next sentence, it states that he conducted, orchestrated and arranged the Broadway show "Islands" ... a reliable source that was referenced in the book "John Wulp" a biography about Broadway Producer John Wulp ... but was for some reason, removed) ... Mr. Robinson is not known for writing the book "Does God Sing" ... he is not an author first. This was not in the original article. The subject heading is: Aaron Robinson (composer). He is a composer ... these are not corrections by whoever went in and so quickly re-wrote this article. To state Mr Robinson is known for writing a book, and is "additionally known" for other things is untrue. Whoever wrote that is mistaken. It is wrong. If they had referenced the two publications that were previous included, they would have known this. The book was just released in 2012 but Mr Robinson has been a conductor and composer for 25 years. The reason the book was written, documenting his life in music. At some point, readers must trust an article's creator who has done their research and placed true facts within an article that is referenced in other sources. Now however, the reader has no reference points. The reviewer who went in and deleted so many things and changed so many facts, has actually made this subject less notable. To have removed the New Grove book on composers is detrimental to this article. It proves and backs so many statements. To ask: "by whom?" regarding the organist comment, one must also go back in and question "by whom" when a statement such as: "He is known for writing the book ..." (citation is needed for this statement) ~ furthermore, why is "disambiguation" needed for conductor? when the book states clearly that he is a composer and conductor ... his recordings listed support "recording artist" and of course "author" for the book he wrote. Who went in and made these changes? ... and why? Why so hastily? It took me weeks upon weeks to construct this ... and in mere minutes, someone went in and changed the entire notability of this subject. I just went in and saw that the statement "and can be seen in the PBS documentary On This Island." is referenced by the book "John Wulp" ~ first, this run on sentence has nothing to do with the previous statement regarding early jazz and ragtime. It is a poorly constructed sentence ... and the reference is completely wrong. The book does not reference a reliable source for the PBS documentary ON THIS ISLAND. Who went in and did this? and why? I just can't understand it ... they completely made a mess of this article and now it is unreliable in so many ways. Why? I thank you for trying to clean-up what you thought was wrong to begin with, but in doing so, you've made this article incorrect and wrong. Impromp2Music (talk) 20:04, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- The New Grove reference was removed from the lede sentence, since it only served to provide a citation for the fact that the subject is a composer. The lead section serves to summarize the article content and clearly state why the subject is significant and/or important. We then establish notability through the sources provided. The New Grove reference was not actually used to support any other content and when attempting to access the book for verification and possible usage for other content, it was inaccessible. If you can offer a full citation (including pages) for the requested sources using the book, please feel free to do so. The Wulp reference was there and used with the Wulp content within the article below. I have moved the citation back. You state above the the subject is not known for writing the book Does God Sing, but make this claim in the article. A bit puzzling. Did he actually not write the book? According to my search for a full citation, the claim was accurate. Is the subject not known for things other than writing a book? The request for disambiguation is due to the word conductor. Take a look at that link. We need to disambiguate the word. Keep in mind that not all readers use English as a primary language. The statement that the subject is "Considered to be one of the world's great orchestral organists" needs clarification. This lacks a neutral point of view. The statement that the subject is known for writing a book, is based on his published works, which is supported in the corresponding "Published works" section below. The statement "and can be seen in the PBS documentary On This Island." was cited as such in the lead section, because this is how you had it cited in the section below. I moved the statement to the lead section, because it helps to support notability. My bad. You ask why these changes were done so "hastily". I suppose it is due to the inaccurate (and unfortunate) guidance you have received by other less experienced and new editors than yourself. I certainly apologize that you have received mixed messages from the community. That said, I find it ironic that you would request article cleanup and assistance from so many editors in various different places, only to complain when a seasoned editor finally decides to help you by doing just that. Again, my bad. In all regards, while the article requires additional citations, as noted, it is now in compliance with the encyclopedia's guidelines. You're welcome. - This discussion should be taking place on the article's talk page. Your rationales for what should be in the article belong there, where you can try to reach consensus about its content with other editors working on it. The Help Desk can explain policies and explain practicalities, but it's not here to arbitrate on the content of articles. But I can address a couple of points not clarified yet.
- At some point, readers must trust an article's creator ... No. All Misplaced Pages content must be independently verifiable; nothing can be taken on trust and references must be shown. And there is no "creator" of an article; there are only contributors and every article is forever a work in progress.
- ... less credible now than when it was first approved. The article hasn't been "approved"; only accepted as passing the threshold for inclusion. There is no implication that the content you wrote was definitive.

I removed the disambiguation tag - it's hardly likely that he is a composer and tram conductor. So I am inclined to think that some of the criticism of the article is unreasonable. Henry Berry Lowrie
The picture you have alleged to be Henry Berry Lowrie is not he. It is my great-great-grandfather Quinn Godwin. Quinn's baby son, Uncle John Godwin, had that picture for close to 80 years. He loaned it to his nephew, Lonnie Revels, Jr., in the 1970s and Lonnie never gave it back. He used it in a brochure about Henry Berry, wrongly calling it Henry Berry. It is ironic that Henry Berry, an Indian, is falsely portrayed by a white man, even though the white man was married to two Indian women, Sally Hammans and Mary Sampson. Please correct this huge mistake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.161.87.214 (talk) 17:51, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- The problem we have is that the picture's page commons:File:Henry Berry Lowrie.jpg says that it comes from "the biography page about him and his work by the city of Alexandria, VA.", and indeed this shows the picture and identifies it as Lowrie. This means that we have an apparently reliable source (a .gov website) that identifies it as Lowrie, and you, whom we know nothing about, identifying it as Godwin. I'm not trying to impugn your veracity, but as it stands a reader has no way of knowing if you are correct, or if you (g-g-grandchild of Godwin) even exist! Have you got some other published evidence - another photo of either Godwin or Lowrie for example? Otherwise I'm afraid that the criterion for Misplaced Pages is verifiability, not truth, and the identification should stand. --ColinFine (talk) 16:44, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Everyone, I do not know how to add information to a site So maybe one of you can do it for me. Mischa Barton was in a movie called; 'Paranoid' with Jessica Alba. circa 2004. This movie is not listed in her works. She did a great job playing a 'deaf-mute'. Thanks! Regards, Richard C. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.95.178.181 (talk) 23:01, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Deleted Chesapeake Conservancy entry
Hi there, I am trying to create an organizational page for the Chesapeake Conservancy, just like the ones for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Defenders of Wildlife. My first attempt was removed due to G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion. Do you have suggestions of how I can create this page without it being perceived as a promotion and, thus, deleted? Thank you very much. Best, Twigatembo (talk) 00:29, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- I wouldn't use Chesapeake Bay Foundation as a model of excellence. The final paragraph is borderline acceptable, probably on the wrong side of acceptable.
- In your case, sentences such as
- "The Conservancy believes that connecting people to the Bay is vital to ensuring the long-term conservation of the Chesapeake Bay" is clearly promotional. It is often accepted to include a quote from the organization about the mission, but it should be a clear quote.
- The article looks like it was written by someone who is promoting the organization, not an outside disinterested summary of the organization.
- You need some references that are independent of the subject. Has it been discussed in newspapers or books?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:41, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Misplaced Pages does not contain "organizational pages": it contains encyclopaedia articles, some of which are about organisations. I'm not just being picky: I suspect that you are having problems with the article because of the way you are thinking of it. This is not a directory, or a social networking site: it is a general encyclopaedia, and the articles should be appropriate in tone and content to that purpose. --ColinFine (talk) 16:51, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
User Name / Pass Word
I have a user name but I can't log in because I have forgotten my password. When I ask for a new password and input my e-mail addresses the system tells me that there is no e-mail address connected to my user name. How do I get out of this mess. I am not even sure where I can read an answer if you have one. Thanks Fred — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.31.179.30 (talk) 03:48, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hello Fred! You'll read the answer right here. Unfortunately, the only way to recover a lost password is through the email system you have tried to use. If you didn't enable email on that account, then there is no way to recover your lost password. The only recourse at this point is to create a new account. They are all really bad articles, none of them have any references at all. You should definitely not be using any of them as examples of what a proper WP article should look like. Unjustly Blocked, Please Assist
This is Colton Cosmic. I was blocked by Timotheus Canens who said I was sockpuppeting and abusing multiple accounts. It's just not true. I never sockpuppeted Misplaced Pages. I never had multiple accounts. I had an account where I was harassed and so I switched to a new one under WP:CLEANSTART and never went back. With the new account I edited entirely different articles. I complied with all CLEANSTART provisions that I know of. My previous account was never sanctioned, blocked, or warned, and I made many, many constructive edits with it.
Another admin, UltraExactZZ, also acted against me, blocking me from editing my own talkpage. You can have a look at it (User talk:Colton Cosmic) but don't blame me for the drama, I didn't want that. There are all manner of hangers on there, chiming in with prosecutorial speeches, and the most unseemly among them attacking my honesty and needling me after I was blocked from my page, and thus unable to rebut.
How to explain this? Most of them are good, but the sorry truth is that Misplaced Pages has a few bad admins and they do a lot of damage to the project. They're running the tools indiscriminately to push up their stats on the blocked editor leaderboard. They have no standards. Infamous among them is BWilkins, who threatened to block me if I didn't disclose him my previous account, and boasted of his "admin phallus" which he states is quite large. Timotheus Canens, who blocked me, is another bully, idly dwelling on IRC and sublimating his cyberstalking proclivities by running the "Check User" tool at a whim on any editor he dislikes. UltraExactZZ is the common specimen of the vicarious entity walking two steps behind the bully, ready to back him up.
I'm not saying I'm perfect. If you look at my edits I too sharply criticized a sarcastic suicide metaphor essay I mistook for policy. I criticized a fellow admin as "provocateur" but he or she was antagonizing a fellow, vulnerable, editor, so that edit looks bad but you have to consider the context. There was one article where I was accused of edit-warring, but it was a BLP and I sought to protect the subject and his family from privacy invasion. I got angry when I was blocked without warning or discussion, and should have handled all that stuff at my talkpage better. But this guy was sitting on IRC and taking away a hobby of mine, making a false claim about me, without a word of discussion!
What else? ArbCom considered my case and said I had to disclose (to it) my previous account. I didn't do that, policy doesn't say I have to do that, and ArbCom's mailing list contents have been compromised and published in the past. But realize that ArbCom *did not* block me, they only declined to remove my block. Any admin can still unblock me. If you unblock just my talkpage I'll log in to answer any questions you have. I promise to be civil and limit myself to a one-revert-per-day rule if you unblock me. Colton Cosmic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.147.225.24 (talk) 13:52, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

- It's clear, by the way, that BWilkins' phallic crack was a jocular response to another user's accusing him of waving his "big admin-phallus". It's less clear, at first glance, that that exchange has anything to do with Colton Cosmic. —Tamfang (talk) 02:47, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Self Published Book
I have recently published a book entitled "The Whole Truth: A Fresh Look At Reality". It is based on scientific fact and consists of original ideas and comments on a number of topics including reality, time, our universe, space, entropy and life. One example is that I propose the idea that reality is not a single subject but is composed of at least two aspects -physical reality and subjective, or perceived, reality which are independent, although inter-related. When reality is considered from this perspective one sees many subjects, such as time, in a completely different way.
I believe that my ideas are interesting, and that some could be useful, or even valuable to others. I would like to participate in Misplaced Pages discussions on a number of subjects, but I do not want to violate Misplaced Pages's principles or offend anyone.
I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.
Sui docuit (talk) 14:27, 29 October 2012 (UTC)sui docuit
- Hi Sui docuit. What you propose is unlikely to be included in Misplaced Pages, since we have a policy on fringe theories that would proscribe it. If the only source for your theory is your own self-published book, then it does not meet the basic requirements for inclusion, and an article would not be appropriate. Misplaced Pages isn't a forum for discussing new ideas, we are an encyclopedia that reports on subjects which have received significant mainstream coverage. Yunshui 雲水 14:36, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- (ec)Misplaced Pages does not publish Original research, citing your own work is considered bad form - other than that, there is no reason why you should not participate freely in improving the encyclopedia. You might want to take a look at WP:WikiProject Philosophy, as it seems to be the best match to your field of interest. Welcome to Misplaced Pages! datasets on contributions to Misplaced Pages and/or sister websites
Hello,
I'm interested in doing a statistical analysis of editing behaviors for a university research project. Where can I find datasets that contain information on edits made to Misplaced Pages and its sister websites? Information on each user that makes an edit to a page would also be nice. I ask because I think it would be rather inconvenient to have to look at individual page histories and user contributions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.135.100.115 (talk) 14:55, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
WRONG COMPANY DIRECTION
There is currently a Misplaced Pages page named Lonmin.
When you search for the company Lonrho it automatically takes you to the Lonmin page as though Lonrho is now Lonmin.
This is completely wrong and actually Lonrho has no involvement with the company called Lonmin at all. The direction of search for Lonrho, points to Lonmin, this must be cancelled/ changed as the company Lonrho does not want to be related to the business actions of Lonmin and consequently appear associated with the company. This is completely mis informed information and can have a negative knock on effect for Lonrho.
Lonrho for some reason is in the url for Lonmin.
Please may you inform me of the change to this misdirection. The company Lonrho are looking to hold their own Misplaced Pages page.
Please conifrm receipt of this email and what action will be taken to rectify this.
Many thanks and best regards,

- The references in the article make it clear that Lonrho plc was renamed to Lonmin plc in 1999. Many readers, however, will remember the company as Lonrho, and it is quite reasonable that there should be a redirect from Lonrho to Lonmin. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:55, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- I have replaced the redirect with a (very brief) stub at Lonrho. It was not a simple name change - the company actually split into two separate entities. Roger (talk) 15:57, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- This ref from the company registrar makes it a bit clearer. The company now known as Lonrho plc is what until 2007 was Lonrho Africa plc. The company that was previously Lonrho plc became Lonmin plc in 1999. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:04, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Good find! The organigram at http://www.lonrho.com/About_Lonrho/Strategy_~_Vision/Default.aspx?id=745 also helps. Roger (talk) 16:10, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

- It may be open to question which is the primary topic in this case. I expect that most people who recognise the name Lonrho will be thinking of the old Tiny Rowlands company, and the history of that is covered in the Lonmin article, rather than the new Lonrho. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:41, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- AIUI Lonmin was split off from Lonrho, so that history should be moved to the Lonrho article. It seems to me that the company split was misinterpreted as a name change by whoever worked on the article here on WP so they simply moved Lonrho to Lonmin instead of creating a new separate article. Roger (talk) 18:24, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- When the split happened, the name Lonrho plc stayed with the part that subsequently became Lonmin. It was the part that for 9 years was known as Lonrho Africa plc that was eventually renamed to become the current Lonrho. The Lonrho plc share price before and after the demerger would imply that only about 20% of the company had been demerged into Lonrho Africa plc. It appears (from that & from the registrar's information referenced above) that what is now Lonrho was split off from what is now Lonmin, rather than vice versa. I wonder whether it might not be clearer to have 3 different articles, one for the old company before the 1998 split, one for what is now Lonmin, & one for what is now Lonrho. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:51, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- That seems like a sensible solution - the current Lonrho could possibly go under the name Lonrho Africa - looking at it's organigram the current "Lonrho plc" is just a "top structure" added above "Lonrho Africa Holdings" except for "Lonrho Transportation" which appears to simply be a shell that owns an airline. (Why do companies like this go out of their way to make stuff so complicated for us?) Roger (talk) 19:18, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

We updated the page referring to our organisation(Climate Disclosure Standards Board), which then was put on fast track delete, the reason being that google didn't show any results on us(it does, with our website on top). I tried contesting it but it was deleted without any response on my contest. All we wanted to do is put up a more up to date description of our organisation. We are a registered charity and have no intention of breaking any rules or guidelines set out by wikipedia. We would simply like to update the page referring to us. This is primarily achieved by demonstrating that people not connected with the subject have decided that the subject is worthy of being discussed through the existence of articles in mainstream newspapers (excluding press releases and similar self-generated publicity produced by the subject itself) or other publications with a reputation for independence and quality. Roger (talk) 18:33, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- I do not know if this organization is notable or not, it in fact may be notable. However, the article's style was not encyclopedic—the content was likely copied from the company's website. In addition, the article was too long—it contained lots of information not suitable for encyclopedia and contained no references except own website, facebook page and a blog. Weird category name
There is something wrong with the article about Berlin. It's located in the category "Category:Misplaced Pages articles needing factual verification from May 2,012". - Odd. After some long perusing through the article's history, I found that the verification tag was originally added there on August 6th and the category that followed with it was messed up as well as it said August 2,012. Misplaced Pages's CSS is just plain too hard to read from
I know this sounds like a stupid complaint, but sometimes this website is too wide to read.
Sometimes this isn't a big problem like in articles with a lot of images which help push lines
of text into a narrower column, but in many pages, like this talk page for instance,
the lines are so long that my eyes get confused just trying to find the right letters.
I have a widescreen monitor which makes this a huge problem. I feel like I am back
in kindergarten, where you had to use rulers or long index cards when reading books
so you could keep track of a line. Can someone point me to some site-column shrinking
CSS that I can use on the user-custom CSS page?

- One possible workaround would be to use the browser 'zoom' buttons. Not sure of your browser, but Firefox has option for toobar buttons (not default). The downside is that in addition to shorter lines, you get bigger text -- which may or may not be a disadvantage. ~Just a suggestion ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 22:10, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm so un-savvy I don't even know what "CSS" means, but what I do in such cases (never at WP that I can remember) is hit the resize button in the upper right-hand corner of my screen, between the minimize and x-out buttons. Then I adjust the page size to my preference by dragging the margins in or out, up or down. Hope that helps. Yopienso (talk) 22:34, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

- I am aware of the User-custom CSS, I've even fiddled around with it, and managed to get the readable columns I was looking for, albeit with floating "Read|Edit|View History|*" off to the side. What I'm wondering is if anyone has managed to create a working narrow wikipedia CSS I can use, or if there are other workarounds that don't involve browser zoom (giant text and blurry pictures), or window scaling (affects entire browser and you see desktop icons in the background).
- I have a widescreen monitor too. I solve the problem by making my browser window only half as wide as the maximum. —Tamfang (talk) 02:38, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Citation
My problem is: I am citing information from a web source. The web source has a 'citation' tab. That citation tab specifies a formatted citation. That citation isn't very helpful for someone simply interested in verifying, or for wishing to find more related information.
My question is: should I just stick with the citation as specified, use URL citation based on " Although referring the URL might be enough in some cases..." , or add a 2nd citation (both), or ... (?)
- Web source of information: AnAge entry for Petaurus breviceps Classification (HAGRID: 02980)
- 'Citation' tab link: Disclaimers, Credits, and Copyright
- "...cite HAGR using: " de Magalhaes, J. P., Budovsky, A., Lehmann, G., Costa, J., Li, Y., Fraifeld, V., Church, G. M. (2009) "The Human Ageing Genomic Resources: online databases and tools for biogerontologists." Aging Cell 8(1):65-72.

- Hi Eric! Misplaced Pages actually has several templates for citations—one of the generic ones is {{cite web}} (click to learn how to use). You can also use {{cite book}}, or one of the many others—see WP:Referencing for beginners. Thanks, Theopolisme Boo! 23:20, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Better yet, see WP:Referencing for beginners with citation templates. Theopolisme Boo! 23:22, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Been there, done that - but this situation seems like a judgement call to me. ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 23:32, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- A citation template is always better — more info to the reader, is it not? Theopolisme Boo! 23:33, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

What the heck is Category:Misplaced Pages image maps, and why does Ben Kilpatrick have it? Clarityfiend (talk) 07:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
- Image maps are images which have multiple links in it mapped to the various people or objects in the image. The photograph in Ben Kilpatrick below the infobox is a imagemap. --Anbu121 (talk me) 08:01, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Uploading of newspaper articles
Hi all,
I have been working on the Boss School of Music article, and I hope it looks fine. For the same I have copies of some old newspaper articles regarding the subject, and I since I could not find these on the internet, I wanted to know if I could upload them somewhere, and then cite them in the article. These articles were published by some local newspapers and therefore have not been uploaded by the publishing house.
Thanks Nikhil D. Gupta (talk) 08:29, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
- You don't need to upload them in order to cite them. Just cite them giving the publication name, publisher name, the name of the author(s) of the piece, title of the piece, page number in the newspaper, and date. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 08:33, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
- You must not upload them - just cite them. If you upload them you will be violating copyright and all links you add on WP to such uploads will have to be removed. Template:Cite news provides a convenient way to cite newspaper articles. Roger (talk) 08:37, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Evalueserve logo update
Hi team, Evalueserve needs to replace its old logo on its Misplaced Pages page with its new logo version. I am part of Evalueserve's Marcom team and I've tried to upload it, but haven't succeeded as my account is not confirmed. Could you please confirm my Misplaced Pages account so that I can proceed with the logo replacement or advice me how this can be done?
