During the Carolingian dynasty, Teralfene belonged to the shire of Brabant. As from 1056 it was part of a German territory that was given to the sepulchres of Flanders in feud (the so-called Rijks-Vlaanderen). Under French governance Teralfene was part of the Dijle-territory. During the Dutch period, this department was transformed to the province Zuid-Brabant in 1815 by Willem I of Orange. Until the end of 1976 Teralfene remained an independent municipality.
