The Help Project Newsletter
Issue V - January 2013
Project news summary
From the editor

Hello again from the Help Project!

In the last newsletter (which was quite a while ago sorry!) I talked about my fellowship and the plans for improving the main portal page, Help:Contents. Well I'm sad to say that my fellowship is now over, but very happy to say that the proposed improvements to that page have been completed and implemented. Do check it out if you haven't already.

Another important and frequently used help page, Misplaced Pages:Contact us, has also seen a significant revamp. You may recognise the design inspiration from the new tutorial pages.

In project news, we now have a subscription to the "article alerts" service. Any deletion nominations, move discussions, or requests for comments on pages within the Help Project's scope will now show up at Misplaced Pages:Help Project/Article alerts. So that's definitely a page which project members might want to watch.

Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Misplaced Pages:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

Open Help Conference

The Open Help Conference will be taking place June 15-19 in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation.

It has been suggested to send a team from Misplaced Pages/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Misplaced Pages's help.

There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) Please join the discussion in Meta's IdeaLab if you're interested, and/or have suggestions about what we could work on.

Other news

If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

Suggestions for future issues are welcome at Misplaced Pages:Help Project/Newsletter.

Frieda Ekotto

Re: Frieda Ekotto page. Hi Sarah thanks for the notes about the page. I had trouble finding secondary sources on Frieda Ekotto's biography. However, I can probably use a review or so to substantiate her scholarly work. Would that help? Also, how do I untag what you've flagged once I'm done adding these sources? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thorgodofwar (talkcontribs) 00:21, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Thorgodofwar! That's usually one of the biggest issues when writing about academics - lack of reliable secondary sources. A good guide for reference is WP:ACADEMIC which sets out the notability guidelines for academics. If you can find some reviews of her work, that'd be great - also folks who cite her work in their writing. It can be stuff listed behind paywalls (i.e. on Jstor). My biggest fear is that if we don't find enough reliable secondary sources for the article it could be nominated for deletion :( All you have to do is remove the templates at the top of the page, you should see them up there, it's just above the infobox mark up. While they are rather unsightly, they serve as an attractor for other Wikipedians to help improve it. Thanks for contributing - it's a challenge! And if worse comes to worse, we might have to just wait a few more years to include her. Fingers crossed that isn't the case. :) SarahStierch (talk) 00:28, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
p.s. don't forget to sign your posts whenever you write on a talk page (even your own). You can do that by typing 4 tildes: ~~~~. That way we know who writes it and a bot doesn't come by and have to do it for you. :) SarahStierch (talk) 00:28, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Sarah. I found an interview with her and some reviews and will add. Will drop you a note when I'm done so you can check whether this makes it better? Thanks for your help. Thorgodofwar (talk) 00:35, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Sounds good! SarahStierch (talk) 00:36, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Sarah, I've updated the page and added 3 secondary sources (1 interview and 2 reviews of her work). I've also removed your tags. Please let me know if this is ok. Thorgodofwar (talk) 01:25, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Awesome, good work :) Can't wait to see it improve as time goes on. And thanks for being bold and removing the templates. Can't wait to see what you contribute next! SarahStierch (talk) 05:53, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Karen Lord

Hi, SarahStierch! Thanks for your comments on the Karen Lord page. I'm aware of the fact that WordPress is considered to be an unreliable source, but in this case, it's only referenced because it's Karen Lord's primary professional website. It is not used as a reference for any of the data (as far as I am aware) -- those citations are to secondary sources. What is the recommended procedure in these situations?

The article is looking good! I just get extra paranoid about women's biographies, since I'm so used to having them nominated for deletion or questioned on notability due to sources we often use - so I like to make sure we (and me!) cover our butts. Anything that isn't cited with a reliable secondary source can be removed or challenged on Misplaced Pages, so I always try to replace content with non-related websites as best as possible. The external links have a lot of great content, we can keep expanding it using that - so great work at building all the citations and links out. The next move is to expand out the article using interviews, reviews, write-up's about her and her work, etc. I think the article will only get improved at this point! I've never heard of her until now, so thanks for writing this - I'm in need of some new reading material :) If you need anything, let me know - and I hope you'll keep contributing. SarahStierch (talk) 06:06, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
p.s. one more tip: don't forget to "sign your posts" - whenever you write on a talk page (your own, someone else's, or an article) you should sign your post. It's a common thing most people don't do when they start editing - but it let's us know who wrote what without having to check our history (we're lazy). You can do that by writing 4 tildes at the end of your posts: ~~~~. SarahStierch (talk) 06:08, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

RESPONSE TO SARAH AND TO JOHN CD

Dear Sarah and John,04:04, 27 April 2013 (UTC)04:04, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Littlelulu89 (talk) I am confused about what the problem is regarding the submission for information on Phillip J. Petillo, Luthier-Engineer. I am sorry if I violated any rules but I assure you I have all documentation, letter, bibliography and all information regarding the work and life of Phillip J. Petillo. I am currently writing a book for a publishing company on his work from 1966-2010 when he died suddenly after being awarded three Core Patents from the USPTO. I am sorry if I presented the information incorrectly. I have letter from ROALD HOFFMAN, Nobel Prize winner on Dr. Petillo's work with the use of BORAX in the last three CORE Patents that were awarded and being considered for use by US SUBS. Do you have a service that could help me to conform to your rules? I assure you I have all the documentation since 1966 and his 30 patents covering the Musical, Medical and Energy Venues. His sons continue his legacy and his medical devices are still being used, one is currently in the Smithsonian. It would be a shame not to have him in your publication for my lack of utilizing your COMPLEX rules which can be quite confusing. I would be glad to pay someone to do a PROPER presentation of the all the documentation I have and that is already published since 1966 with some on you tube with Bruce Springsteen. It can be very confusing when trying to follow all your specification that can be confusing to the lay person. Thank you for your insight and I look forward to hoping you can help me present the important work that was discovered by Dr. Petillo and that his work is still being carried on today by his son, David and our entire family. I would be happy to pay for assistance if you have such a service offered to do this correctly to accommodate your rules properly. I apologize for whatever I have presented incorrectly. Thank you for your time. Sincerely with Appreciation. 04:04, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Lucille A. Hi there. I think you have maybe the wrong Sarah..or..editor? I'm unfamiliar with the situation and might not be the best person to ask. I'm sorry :( SarahStierch (talk) 06:01, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Re: your unsolicited comments about Chandra Mohanty article

I'm not a newbie user, but thanks for swooping in and decorating this article with a bunch of flags. Lovely! I have only just started my work on this article. This article is under no more risk of being nominated for deletion because of the improvements I have made today than it was before I made them yesterday and your laying the threat on it is not helpful.

I know how to properly acquire and license a photograph. If you had bothered to check, you would have seen that this image is pulled from Wikimedia Commons where it is clearly indicated that the photograph is using a Creative Commons license. All rights have been released so lay off the lawsuit threats.

And I feel obliged to observe that if you're going around to all the #GWWI participants' talk pages and leaving similar "helpful" comments that you are not doing the #GWWI project a service (and you certainly aren't making me wish to have a tea). I've read your user page. You should know better than to dump all this on my Talk page instead of the Talk page for the article where it would be welcome and helpful. ChristineBushMV (talk) 04:57, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

:-( Misplaced Pages:Assume good faith. Sorry, I tried to help, and I'm sorry it came off like it wasn't that way. Regardless, I hope you'll continue contributing to Misplaced Pages in a positive manner and assume good faith of other editors. Thanks for being involved in the women's editing initiative. SarahStierch (talk) 05:52, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi ChristineBushMV (talk), I am one of the main organizers of #GWWI. SarahStierch's comments are meant in good faith, and overall to improve the quality of the pages improved/created by the #GWWI project. She pointed out a few things about the page I created which another long-time Wikipedian had flagged as well. Her comments really helped me with my page--and we believe that her feedback is ultimately very useful for our project (and thank her for her work.) As we get more involved with this project, let's try to assume good faith on each other's parts as we get to know Misplaced Pages better. We're all not perfect, but we're trying! Thanks so much for your contributions to #GWWI. Thorgodofwar (talk) 08:41, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Teahouse Badges

Hey Sarah! How are you? Figured I would let you know that I've modified Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Badge/Large to include the "message" and "signed" parameters, and I think it looks great and Ocaasi has already included the change in the WikiLove script. Due to the success there, I've decided to tackle adding the ability to specify a number of badges received in the Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Badge/Small template and have set up a series of -sandbox templates (Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Host-sandbox, Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Badge/Small-sandbox, Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Badge/Answer-sandbox, Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Badge/Easter egg-sandbox, Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Badge/Host-sandbox, Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Badge/Question-sandbox) and have been testing the changes on Misplaced Pages:Teahouse/Host landing#Technical 13. For some reason, setting the value of badges to "yes" or "1" changes the placement of the badge. Also, the easter-egg badge seems smaller to me, and I'm not sure why. I know you are familiar with some of this coding stuff, so I figured I'd have you look at it and see if you can offer some improvements. I'm also asking Soni, Writ, Heather, and Ocaasi to take a peek at it as well and see if we can't get it working right. Thanks. Technical 13 (talk) 22:22, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi guys. I wasn't involved in creating the badge system. I'm flattered you'd include me in the conversation. I trust everyone to work on behalf of me and the community - so I'm good to be opted out of this right now due to other obligations :) SarahStierch (talk) 17:40, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

"women" categories

Hey Sarah - saw your comments on Talk: Amanda Filipacchi (I'll eat my hat if I spelled that right on first try). I do have a problem with the so called "women" categories, when they are used as subcategories while removing them from the main cats. I'm all for feminist studies, and as you no doubt recall I've spoken out about the male bias here - my "overabundance of testosterone" comment still gets me unfriendly email - but I object to a structure where the desired result is that we separate out female writers, put them in a subcategory, leaving the main "American novelists" category purely male. My reasons should be obvious - I'd be ok with having the female writers in both the sub cat and the main cat, but I absolutely can't agree to having them removed from "American novelists", even if it means that feminist studies can be facilitated. I'm far more concerned about someone perusing the "American novelists" category and getting the impression that all novelists are male. And then there's the annoying grammatical error - "women" is not an adjective, "female" is. I've said elsewhere that Wiki editors tend to be tone deaf when it comes to describing women - I truly don't think that they would think that "men politicians" or "men doctors" sound correct, yet they have no problem with "women politicians" or "women doctors". I don't actually think the grammatical error is the most important aspect here, but it's a pet peeve. But I do think that cleansing the novelists cat of women is wrong, offensive, and should not be allowed to stand. Cheers! Tvoz/talk 04:41, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. As I have thought I've said before - having "Women foo" categories is important to me. I think it's stupid to remove women from the "American foo" category (of course!). But, as we know, they want to "clean up" those categories - so I have no clue how that will be handled. I just hate the fact that the situation is getting so blended and weird now that people want to remove "Women foo" categories in general. While it's nice to think we live in a world that is genderless conceptually, we don't (I had this conversation in Berlin last year, where I met many German editors who believe that gendered issues no longer exist, which is clearly not true regardless of language). It doesn't really matter though - I'm too burnt out at this point to try to fight and argue and deal with it on talk pages through the at times painful consensus process that makes Misplaced Pages so unique and special (sincerely). Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I'm sorry I'm too worn out (from so long of "doing" women's focused projects on Misplaced Pages) to do much at this point. I'm spent, and this entire blow up was just...something that pushed me over the edge. Thanks for coming by though, and thanks for contributing to Misplaced Pages. SarahStierch (talk) 04:55, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Gah, had to edit for grammar and so much more. I am officially burnt out about this stuff! SarahStierch (talk) 04:58, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I can't argue with that- time for a break! Tvoz/talk 05:08, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

I've been seeing a edge of the gender categorizing issue and was going to leap into the discussion but have less desire to push that than I do to respect your wiki burnout. So, to quote an old song "We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when." Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 15:29, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
