The mamanwas were the original settlers of Tubod. Being nomadic in nature, the natives moved to the hinterland when Christian immigrants occupied the area. Agustin Mendez was the first Christian settler and is considered the founder of the area. He was an industrious person and was able to cultivate a large area of land planted with abaca, rice, and other crops.


Tubod in early times is a woodland or otherwise known as a virgin forest with native inhabitants the “Mamanwas”. They have been a nomadic in nature; they traveled from the hinterland in Tubod usually stayed near the riverbank. Mamanwas derived from the Two (2) root words "Man" mean people, or “Banwa” means jungle. The "Mamanwas" means people living in the jungle. The Mamanwa people are still occupying the hinterland in Tubod particularly in the Barangays Cawilan and Motorpool. It is a very significant beginning in building a home for an exquisite tuboranon. This is an indication that, the past oldest times are essential tool for the making in Tubod. In which we generates record to formed part in its history. It is a place where we find a better dwelling for Tuboranon.
Tubod was previously part of the Municipality of ], ]. It was created by virtue of dated September 18, 1957.




History speaks; it is Mr. Agustin Mendez the first man discovers the place. He is an immigrant from Ubay, Bohol Province on 19th Century. A man with noble qualities in life, he eagerly promotes Tubod in the map of Surigao del Norte. The origin tells us that this place has no legitimate name. It is Mr. Mendez organizes a Cabeza unit to create a name of the place.



Inadvertently, the Cabeza equivalents to a “leader” while the Cabezilla equivalents to a “Kagawad” we called today. This is one way to remember the past 105 years in existence with our dead leaders in Cabezilla. Today, we still give respect-paying tribute on their souls who painstakingly contributed the making of Tubod. The Cabeza ruling body is composed of the original tuboranon namely; Agustin Mendez, Donato Pacatang, Florencio Gallenero, Gabriel Sumania, Isaias Calamba, Mariano A. Dapar, Galanida, Lumayag and Barro. Mr. Agustin Mendez led the Cabeza bloc while the young Galanida acts his secretary all the rest are his Cabeza Council members. The Cabeza Council governs under the Cabeza law.



Early days of the year, Mr. Mendez calls a priest in Carrascal, Surigao del Sur to officially bless this place. Unfortunately, the invitation failed due to bad weather, “Kusog kaayo ang hangin” and they failed to come. The journey's objective is to be able to declare and name the place. The means of transportation before from Carrascal to Placer uses only a Cayack or “Baroto nga may Layag” before reaches Placer. However, the Mainland wing transportation from Placer to Barangay Timamana is via horse riding try.



Second, Mr. Agustin Mendez's journey, he instructed Cabeza Secretary Galanida to go to Jabonga, Agusan del Norte for a requisition of a certain Clergy. Secretary Galanida officially travels in Jabonga. They cruise Tubod River to Sabang point in Lake Mainit. Consequently, in early times only a connected coastline travel from Mainit shore. It is where early tuboranon glides the bulky Lake of Mainit to reached Jabonga.



Luckily, the invitation in Jabonga had been answer. A day has come. The early settler believes the importance of the first celebration. It is on this day, conceives the new Sitio name. In fact, the priest in Jabonga personally led the blessing. In line with his priestly work upon the authority by the early settler to celebrates the First mass. It was Reverend Father Sanidad declares the place. He called it, “Sitio Union Sanidad” on the “Tres de Abril” Year of our Lord. “Tres de Abril”, is an Espanol term for the 3rd day of April. Coincidentally, the original name of the Sitio derived from the Priest surname, "Sanidad". Thus, early dweller had their mass for monthly worship or having been an option weekly when it needs. It is because they believed in one God and most of them are religious fanatics. Tuboranon are religious people with Roman Catholic dominates other religious affiliation and sects.



Prior to, Sitio Union Sanidad before described have been a Rough Road and Community Houses made up of Nipa and Round Timber materials. The rough national highway is fronting Tubod Roman Catholic Church. In an early period, only a few people settled the place. It is much better that, Sitio Union Sanidad is a progressive Sitio in Barangay Timamana. This Sitio serves as a farmland area where Mr. Mendez cultivated in a day and at night; he goes home in Timamana where his residence established and later part transferred in Tubod.



During the evolution of years, Sitio Union Sanidad separates from the Mother Barangay Timamana through the mandate ordered by duly Constituted Authorities Declaration on 19th Century. Sitio Union Sanidad again declared to be an independent Barangay Tubod on 1908. It is a public knowledge in Tubod that Mr. Agustin Mendez is the first Christian settler who named the place and called him, “TUBOD”. The word “Tubod” comes from the local dialect term, “Tuboran” which means Source of Water. Tubod is a Visayan word that full of meaning. It has been indicated with, “Tuboran sa Kaluoy, Tuboran sa Pagkamanggihatagon ug Tuboran sa Gugma". Barangay Tubod has a populace more or less 100 people mostly immigrants from Bohol, Leyte, Camiguin and Surigao.



Before, it is a Socio-Agricultural Sitio with their source of income coming from the root crops or "Duma” in a Visayan term such as; Ube, Camote and Calibre. Later, a Coco farming and Irrigated Riceland planted twice a year.



On 1908, Barangay Tubod surrounded by Mountainous Terrains, Hills and a Famous Mt. Maniayao stand overlooking the Municipality. A greenly pastureland with a mountain ranges fixed the place. It is a God’s blessing for the people in Tubod with the presence of the Natural and Mineral Resources like; Gold, Silver, Copper, Chromites, Iron and the like.



In religious undertaking, Mr. Mendez donates a Solid Wood material sculptured Patron Saints Peter and Paul made on 19th Century. The Town feast falls every June 28-29 each year. Eventually, Mr. Mendez legacy is the one who founded Tubod and take several donations purposely for Municipal Site and Roman Catholic Church sites. Consequently, he donates some portion of his vast track lands to people in order to entice them living in Tubod.



However, the political bustles in Tubod exist. Mr. Mendez led and inherited by new leaders in establishing Tubod. There are several leaders were appointed/elected in Town. Tubod was previously part of the Municipality of the], ]. Tubod is a 5th class municipality in the province of Surigao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 10,922 people in 2,165 households.

Physical

Tubod lies in a valley at the centre of the peninsula that is the mainland portion of Surigao del Norte, with hills and mountains to the east and west of the town. A picturesque natural feature in the western hills is Songkoy Spring, where clear water emerges from the rainforest and collects in a natural pool that is a popular local swimming place.

Rural areas along the valley floor are dominated by agriculture, while the hills are home to coconut plantations, rainforest and gold mining. To the south of Tubod is Lake Mainit on the border between Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte.

The Maharlika Highway runs through the centre of Tubod and links the town with the major centres of Surigao City to the north and Butuan in Agusan del Norte to the south. The closest airport is in Surigao City which has flights to Cebu and Manila, but larger passenger services operated by Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific fly from Butuan Airport. Ferries at Surigao City connect the mainland with the adjacent islands of Surigao del Norte and the neighbouring province of Southern Leyte.
