if you look at the template, you will see there is no / button, so these templates do not collapse or uncollapse. hence, adding instructions about collapsing something that does not collapse is not a good idea. if there is no or button, we don't add {{collapsible option}} or |state=. Template:Infobox men's college basketball team‎, etc.

Frietjes, here's a template merge I would support in a heartbeat: Template:Infobox men's college basketball team‎ and Template:Infobox women's college basketball team‎.

Have you ever contemplated a comprehensive merge of all the college sports team infobox templates? With a handful of options, I think all U.S. college sports could be accommodated and the team infoboxes would then have a uniform appearance across all sports. Just a thought . . . . Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:48, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

the first is already proposed here. I had thought about the second as well, but it will take more time to work out all the details, since there are differences in the post-season tournament section for various sports. Frietjes (talk) 22:19, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
I just posted a comment in support of the merge of men's and women's college basketball templates. That pending merge should be a no-brainer, and you are clearly already on top of the two minor issues to be addressed in the combined template.
The creation of a combined infobox template for all U.S. college sports teams would require a lot of work and the inclusion of several options, but the core information to be included is common to all. Differences in NCAA playoff structure, etc., could be accommodated by options to be toggled as needed. The payoff would be worth the effort. Not only should these infoboxes have a common appearance within a given sport, the teams affiliated with a given university should also have a common appearance and graphics style, and that can only be accomplished by a common template across all college sports teams. I think you would find the college football, basketball and baseball sports projects to be supportive, and the other college sports do not have active/vocal WikiProjects and tend to follow the lead of the football, basketball and baseball projects. I would be grateful for your help in making this happen, but I also understand that you have numerous pending template projects already. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 11:14, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Template: Heads of State of Kenya (Edit)

I really don't get why this template shouldn't look unique and better than it does right now, it has the colours of the current Presidential Standard and Coat of Arms of Kenya and it has absolutely no affiliation to anything else. If the reason is that is stands out in the Titles and Succession section of the Elizabeth II page I suggest that there be a separate template for the leaders of the Kenya (Commonwealth Realm).

Swiss town Infobox

Hi Frietjes, I made some changes to the infobox settlement wrapper you created at Template:Infobox Swiss town/sandbox. Perhaps you will want to review those changes, and make a few more tweaks before proposing it as a replacement for the current version. Cheers, Nero the second (talk) 14:11, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Frietjes, did you have time to check this template? I think it's working pretty well, you can see a few test cases here. If you don't object, I will renominate it at TfD soon.--Nero the second (talk) 10:21, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
I haven't had a chance to look at it too closely, but moving the ugly mapfinder to a separate template is a good start. I will look at it closer in a day or two. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 18:02, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

Template question

My understanding of templates is improving, but still weak. It was brought to my attention that uses of the {{Infobox NCAA team season}} for women's basketball team sis producing a header which refers to Men's teams.

For example, see: 2013–14 Texas Tech Lady Raiders basketball team

I don't know if this is a result of the edit you proposed in July and simply not noticed until now, or because of something else.

However, I took a look at {{Infobox NCAA team season/succession}} which has the sex parameter. When I look at the source, I do not see it being used. Again, my template knowledge is weak, so I may be missing something, but I notice that every one of the listed parameters is used except for sex, so that why I am asking you.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 22:36, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

I've now been told this was a deliberate change, with an intention to use the mode option, so the question is now moot. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:21, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
there was no intent to break backwards compatibility. the fact that the old syntax doesn't work is a mistake. I will see if it can be corrected. Frietjes (talk) 15:41, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
Don't make it a high priority, in fact, I can't justify doing it at all. I reviewed all entries in Category:College women's basketball team seasons in the United States and changed where needed. If anything needs to be done, it is to update the documentation to note the change, and remove the |sex= parameter, so it doesn't get accidentally used by someone who doesn't see the announcement of the change.
I noted the change at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject_Basketball/Women's_basketball#Announcements--SPhilbrick(Talk) 16:41, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
(Having said, that, I'm involved with basketball but not other sports, so there may be issues with other sports)--SPhilbrick(Talk) 16:43, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
@Sphilbrick: thank you for fixing them. I think we can scan 'what links here' for the template and search for 'women' or 'lady' or 'girl' in the article title. one of the outstanding questions is how to deal with situations where 'lady' (e.g., 2008–09 Savannah State Lady Tigers basketball team) or 'girl' (e.g., 2009–10 Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team) is used to distinguish between men and women. here, we probably want the template to remove the 'women's' prefix? Frietjes (talk) 16:48, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
this is the list of all transclusions with women, lady, or girl in the title. Frietjes (talk) 16:55, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
They are all women's basketball teams except for one tennis team, which is fine. My earlier check did not look at user space, but only two, and they are fine. However, I didn't answer your other question. No obvious answer is jumping out at me, so my current thinking is to let it go until and unless someone else raises it. Tennessee is a more trafficked article, one doesn't have the issue because it is a redirect, but 2008–09 Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball team shows the issue. Frankly, if you didn't notice a problem, I don't think it would jump out at you.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:20, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
@Sphilbrick: I created template:Infobox NCAA team season/team which removes the text if the team has 'lady' or 'cowgirl' in the title. let me know if you see problems and I can undo the change, or fix it. thank you again. Frietjes (talk) 17:34, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

I am fixing the formatting of articles in the tracking categories, and ones that are on my watchlist. there seems to be a problem with your browser in that it is adding spurious newlines above some templates? I have removed the ones from the articles on my watchlist, but you should probably have that fixed. both AWB and bots routinely remove these, but there is no reason to add something that is going to be removed later. Frietjes (talk) 19:54, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Audio in infobox

Hi,

We have some biographies with an audio recording of the subject's voice, using {{Listen}}, below the infobox, and this looks awkward. See, for example, Corrie Corfield. I'm experimenting, using {{Infobox gymnast}}, with different ways to include the audio file in an infobox; see User:Pigsonthewing/sandbox2 (I've left the three infoboxes aligned vertically, so that their widths can be compared). The first infobox is as it was, with no audio; the second includes {{Listen}} and the third has three separate parameters. Is there a better way to do this? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:14, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

@Pigsonthewing: I added a fourth example. to me all three of the four are perfectly acceptable. the one with the embeded box without the |plain=yes is suboptimal. a fifth choice would be to not embed the box, but stack it below. Frietjes (talk) 22:21, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
Thank you; not least for the impressive promptness of your response. I think I prefer option 3, with your changes to the template; it takes up less width. I'm going to ask for the parameters to be added to {{Infobox person}}, and other templates as the need arises. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:30, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: it may be useful to have a default heading when no heading is specified, say '{{{name}}}'s voice'? otherwise, you could have the audio link in there with no context. Frietjes (talk) 22:34, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
Yes, that would be good. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:37, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
Oops. I tried to make |voice_header= a link, but that didn't work... Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:35, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Brillaint work - thank you! Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:51, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

@Pigsonthewing: no problem, I may tweak it a bit more, but I think the basic idea is there. I can simplify it if we aren't allowing someone to pass a {{listen}} template as an arg to |voice=. Frietjes (talk) 22:52, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
I suggest we don't allow that. I've already made the request at {{Infobox person}}, so please mirror any changes there. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:09, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Infobox cricketer

Sorry, I have another job for you ;-)

{{Infobox cricketer}} already has |female=true for women. Please can you modify the code there (which I copied from {{infobox gymnast}} so that if that parameter is set to "true", it displays the female symbol, otherwise the male? I would do so myself, but I'm not sure, in |female|f=&nbsp what each component ("female", "f", the nb space) represents or does. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:34, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Why these symbols even exist? -- Magioladitis (talk) 06:20, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

I believe the content was nearly identical. an admin could compare the two, but the outcome of that discussion was that it was preferable to not have something so visible. however, if you keep away from the Aussies you will probably see less blowback. Frietjes (talk) 17:06, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

Gadget850, I would like to see this category empty at some point. I would like Help pages not to show as incorrect ref formatting. -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:47, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
That would mean that no help pages would show in the category. This needs to be discussed more publicly. --  Gadget850 16:29, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Third gender option

There's a version of the "subheading and gender" code from {{infobox gymnast}}, in {{Infobox user}}. As discussed on its talk page, we need to add a third gender option ("other"; for "gender queer" folk). There is a symbol for this, but not an ASCII code, only an image, File:Gendersign.svg. Can you make this work, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:05, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

added in infobox user, and fixed a bug which was showing anyone with no specified gender as other. not everyone takes the time to set this parameter in the preferences. the use of an image here is going to cause some consistency difficulties since the male/female symbols are sized as text by the browser, while the other has a fixed size. Frietjes (talk) 16:40, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. Yes, I thought that might be a concern. Hopefully not a major one. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:57, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Film director navboxes

As someone who clearly knows their way around templates and navboxes, at what point would you have thought that a film director's navbox would need splitting down into decades (which I consider an arbitrary split anyway)? The reason I'm asking is that I'm been tidying up some navboxes and removing decade splits when they only have about 5-10 entries, and another editor keeps reverting. --Rob Sinden (talk) 14:04, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

yes, splitting by decade is arbitrary. I, personally, don't think this is ever needed. it increases the size of the navbox, and reduces the natural wrapping the occurs when the browser window is resized. Frietjes (talk) 15:14, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks - That pretty much mirrors my opinion. I've left something on the editor in question's talk page. Let's see what happens... --Rob Sinden (talk) 15:34, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
The editor wasn't happy, so I've started a discussion at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Film#Film director navboxes. --Rob Sinden (talk) 18:15, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello. I thought I had left the height parameter there. It was not my intention to remove it completely. I was just trying to "dispense with the various height parameters in the infobox, to be replaced by a single "height" parameter, in which can be placed a {{convert}} template" as per the discussion mentioned. Are you able to help us achieve this? Many thanks.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 20:53, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

@Gibson Flying V: yes, I believe so. you should be able to use |height={{convert|5|ft|11|in|cm|abbr=on}} now as alternative syntax. the old syntax should also work as well, but can be deprecated. Frietjes (talk) 20:56, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

okay, still checking on the other issue. my WindowsXP laptop is pretty old, but I should be able to install Chrome on it. I did not see the same problem in Chrome on Linux. it could be the negative margins, but will have to do some more checking. Frietjes (talk) 15:14, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Templete: Kolkata topics

Respected Madam, I would like to draw your attention to your removal of the "Bands" category from http://en.wikipedia.org/Template:Kolkata_topics. I think Bands of the city are also "topics" of the city. So please let the "Bands" category be in http://en.wikipedia.org/Template:Kolkata_topics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.227.157.41 (talk) 20:19, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

you should create an article on Bands in Kolkata if it is a notable topic with sources. there is no section for bands in Kolkata, hence there is no need for it in the navigation box. Frietjes (talk) 13:51, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

done. note that there was a small, and entirely inconsequential typo in the update to {{Infobox disease}}. I used |defaultsize= instead of |sizedefault= (see Module:InfoboxImage. it's inconsequential since the module uses frameless when this parameter is not set. GT Navboxes

Please let me know why you are changing the colors on GT Navboxes? - Mistercontributer (talk) 19:44, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

@Mistercontributer: according to Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets the official colors are old gold and white. the colors are set by {{CollegePrimaryHex}} and {{CollegeSecondaryHex}} for uniformity across all Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets templates. if these colors are incorrect, the place to change them is in {{CollegePrimaryHex}} and {{CollegeSecondaryHex}}. Frietjes (talk) 15:13, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Georgia Tech also has Navy blue as an official color per Georgia Tech's Licensing and Trademarks web site. Navy blue is also used as a background color on Georgia Tech's Official Athletic Site. These were the colors used when standardizing the GT Navboxes. However, you completely removed Navy blue from the GT Navboxes. In the future I recommend you build consensus for changing the GT Navboxes on the WikiProject Georgia Tech talk page before making any additional changes. Thanks - Mistercontributer (talk) 17:30, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
then change Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, {{CollegePrimaryHex}} and {{CollegeSecondaryHex}}? no need for Georgia Tech to use a scheme that is different from all other universities. let me know if you need helping editing the templates or articles. Frietjes (talk) 17:52, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for adding Navy Blue back to the GT Navboxes. Georgia Tech has more than 2 official colors which is why Navy Blue is not listed as one of the two official colors on Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. I believe the colors keep changing on the GT Navboxes partly due to this issue. I understand the need to follow the same scheme used for other universities. However, most universities only have 2 official colors so the other universities do not have this problem with regards to their Navboxes. - Mistercontributer (talk) 19:44, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

@DoriSmith: wrong editor, you probably want to inform the editor who submitted it (User:Rankersbo). Frietjes (talk) 16:54, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
Sorry Frietjes, my mistake, I thought you'd taken that article on rather than just doing a bit of copyediting. I'll redirect this to the IP who started the article, although I don't suppose that will get very far. However with a decline it can be deleted at some point. Spaceflight infoboxes

Hi! I was wondering whether you could possibly withdraw your proposal to merge Template:Infobox space mission (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) and Template:Infobox space expedition (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). These templates are actually part of WikiProject Spaceflight's infobox standardisation drive, and have both already been merged into Template:Infobox spaceflight (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). Since around 1,800 articles were affected, several templates with very different syntaxes are involved and very few editors are actively involved in large-scale replacement, this process is taking a while, but those templates are on their way out as it is. --W. D. Graham 20:38, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

@WDGraham: so, how about if we formalize it and make the recommendation to delete both after replacement with {{Infobox spaceflight}}? this would place them in the holding cell at WP:TFD/H until they are replaced, but would probably accelerate the process. Frietjes (talk) 20:45, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
If you think it would help then by all means go for it. Otherwise I've really broken the back of it now and having the replacements performed by users familiar with the subject rather than backlog-clearing users does have the advantage of allowing other cleanup to be done at the same time. The merger was discussed at WikiProject level so there is already a consensus to proceed. I'm currently working on transclusions of {{Infobox spacecraft}}, but I'll take a break once I've finished the current batch and get rid of these two. --W. D. Graham 20:53, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Updating infobox building

Hi, can you update this with the infobox hotel parameters? Sevral of the parameters in The Dorchester aren;t showing. The infobox hotel was voted to be deleted ages ago but it still hasn't and it's now got a nasty mint colour in it..♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:28, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

note that there is a typo in the alt parameter in the hotel box, where it is used for both the logo and the image, so this should be corrected as well. Frietjes (talk) 20:15, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Pushpin support on the map was added for an editor. As was the option to choose a symbol for hotels. This probably needs to be kept and the pushpin choices expanded for different types of buildings over time. 'map_dot_label' sounds like the label for the pushpin and probably should be phased out and replaced with pushpin_label. Vegaswikian (talk) 21:31, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
could do that, perhaps call it |pushpin_type=? what about affiliation and Facilities? where are these used? Frietjes (talk) 22:46, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. At one time Vegas I advocated the keeping of it but I really think it's redundant now. It was voted to be merged long ago anyway.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:00, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Lanuages spoken by the Zhuang

Languages spoken by Zhuang people include but are not restricted to Zhuang, and Yue, Pinghua, and South Western Mandarin, in more recent years Putonghua. For each of the four Chinese dialects/languages mentioned whilst often a second language it is possible to find some Zhuang people who consider that to be their first language. One could argue that the number of Zhuang mother tongue speakers is so small that they should not be included, or argue that all should be included for completeness. Please may I ask why in your edit you decided to leave only Yue but not other Chinese dialects/languages spoken by Zhuang people.Johnkn63 (talk) 03:06, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

@Johnkn63: I did not remove or add any languages or other content in my edit to Zhuang people (see before and after. you must have my edit confused with the following edit by the IP editor. Frietjes (talk) 14:09, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Format Dispute

Frietjes, thank you for your interest in contributing to the University of Westminster page. However, I feel that you have been purposely formatting the the navbox with blue cells. I will assume good faith, but this change damages the aesthetics of the navbox, and pages connected to them. I ask you to please refrain from creating this format error. I understand that certain links are missing, but these are being worked on. Thank you for your understanding. Proposed deletion of Chad Johnson (cornerback)

The article Chad Johnson (cornerback) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence he meets WP:ATHLETE, never played 1 NFL game, lack of sourcing for GNG

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
