WikiProject Christianity Newsletter (June 2013)

ICHTHUS

June 2013

From the Editor

Since its formation in 2006, WikiProject Christianity has come a long way. A significant number of new articles have appeared on a wide range of topics, and the quality of some key articles has seen dramatic improvement. Yet, by the very nature of the open, crowd-sourced development environment in which we operate, as the number of pages in the project has increased at times our attention has been naturally diluted. We should of course strive for quality everywhere, but we should remember that this newsletter is called Ichthus.

Starting this month we will start a "Focus on" series, where we will try to "bring Jesus back" and focus on him. For five consecutive issues we will focus on one aspect of the study of Jesus. The goal of this series is to inform our members of what the project contains and highlight those articles which have reached quality and stability.

From this month until November we will focus on the historical Jesus, a topic which has been the subject of much discussion on article talk pages, as well as the general media. This is an important topic, and we have a good set of well referenced articles on that now. Then, starting in December we will focus on Christ, and the spiritual and theological elements that the title entails. Following that the review of the life and ministry of Jesus in the New Testament, his miracles, and parables will take place. And each month the "Bookshelf" will mention a book that fits the theme of the month.

We hope you will enjoy this journey as we present a new aspect of Jesus each month. And given that as the number of project pages increases, the ratio of those watching the pages declines, we hope that more of you will watch some of these central pages that help define this project.

Church of the month

The current building of All Saints' Church, Winthorpe in Nottinghamshire, England which was completed in 1888, is at least the third version of the church, which dates back to at least the early 13th century.

Good articles and DYKs
The article Jesus received the good article mark last month, as did Cleeve Abbey. A number of churches were featured on the main page in the DYK section in May, namely St. Lamberti, Hildesheim, Karja church, Braaby Church, St Patrick's Liverpool, Vlah Church, Freerslev Church, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, Mata-Utu, St. Michael's Cathedral (Sitka, Alaska), St. Lamberti, Hildesheim, Karja church, Braaby Church, St. Pierre Cathedral, Saint-Pierre, Mont Saint Michel Abbey, St Patrick's Church, Liverpool, Vlah Church, St Catherine of Siena Church, Cocking, Catedral Nuestra Señora de La Asunción, Roholte Church, Notre Dame Cathedral, Taiohae, Leicester Abbey, Caracas Cathedral, Caldey Abbey, King's Mead Priory, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Hong Kong) andAll Saints' Church, Winthorpe, as well as the hymn What Wondrous Love Is This.

Focus on...

THE
HISTORICAL JESUS

Did Jesus exist? Did he walk the streets of Jerusalem? The Historicity of Jesus article answers these questions with a firm affirmative. Historicity does not discuss if Jesus walked on water, but if he walked at all. The issue was the subject of scholarly debate before the end of last century, but the academic debate is almost over now. As the article discusses, virtually all academic opposition to the existence of Jesus has evaporated away now and scholars see it as a concluded issue. The discussion is now just among mostly self-published non-academics.

In 2011 John Dickson tweeted that if anyone finds a professor of history who denies that Jesus lived,he would eat a page of his Bible (Matthew 1 he said). Dickson's Bible is still safe.

The article discusses the ancient sources that relate to Jesus and how they fit together to establish that he existed. The evidence for Jesus is not just based on the Christian gospels, but by inter-relating them with non-Christian sources, and the fact that they all "fit together". Moreover, the existence of Jesus is not supported just by Christian scholars and in recent years the detailed knowledge of Jewish scholars and their discoveries (e.g. Shlomo Pines' discovery of the Syriac Josephus) has proven highly beneficial. We encourage you to read and follow the article, for the existence of Jesus is central to the existence of Christianity.

From the bookshelf

Jesus Outside the New Testament: An Introduction to the Ancient Evidence by Robert Van Voorst, 2000 ISBN 0-8028-4368-9

Just a few years after its publication, Van Voorst's book has become the standard comprehensive text for the discussion of ancient sources that relate to Jesus and his historicity. This detailed yet really readable book has received wide ranging endorsements - Blomberg and Harris separately referring to it as the most comprehensive treatment of the subject.

Did you know...

A Handel manuscript
  • ... that Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the initials "S. D. G.", for Soli Deo Gloria, at the beginning and end of all his church compositions to give God credit for the work, and that Handel at times did the same?

Calendar
The coming month includes days dedicated to the honor of Beheading of John the Baptist, Saints Peter and Paul, the Nativity of John the Baptist, and Saint Barnabas.

Original Research

words

Hi Chris. Belated welcome back to Misplaced Pages. You may recall that, back in September, you suggested that I had tried to publish original research in the Thomas More article. That accusation is completely untrue, and I would appreciate it if you could withdraw it. You responded at the time, which I appreciate, but you didn't withdraw the accusation regarding original research. In fact you compounded it by suggesting that I had attempted to edit the More page "according to my own opinions" and that I had done so "as if what believe is unquestionably true". As it happens, you're mistaken on that score too: there are very few things I believe to be "unquestionably true" - Cogito Ergo Sum and Pythagoras's theorem would be two contenders, and I'm not even certain of those - so the idea that I regard my beliefs about Thomas More as being beyond question, let alone that I would edit Misplaced Pages accordingly, is very wide of the mark. But I don't want to spend too long debating your assumptions about what I believe. All I want is to tackle once and for all the suggestion that I attempted to publish original research in the More article. Could you therefore please substantiate that accusation or withdraw it. I think I've been quite patient in waiting two months (and counting) for this to be resolved. I fully accept that you felt the need to take time away from Misplaced Pages in October, and realise that you could not respond at that time, but now that you are back I'd appreciate it if you could resolve this outstanding question. Brooklyn Eagle (talk) 02:26, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

I'm so sorry. You deserved an answer long ago and I failed to get back to you. I had begun developing a reply but I wanted to be precise since there's been disagreement. Sadly, I was overcome by events. I've already posted to the More talk page so the audience can see it there. I'm going to be brief, so please no tendentious replies.
Take for instance your deletion. You went on a long explanation of why you thought that content was biased. You never provided sources beyond your own belief about More. You never provided any academic criticism of Marius's book.
I previously brought up your deletion at Catherine of Aragon. The text communicated what the cited sources said. It's not up to Brooklyn Eagle on behalf of the English-speaking world to determine the sources didn't mean what they said. As I suggested back on 8 October, you are welcome to remove improperly sourced content or use the inline templates to raise questions about particular sentences. I've looked at your edit history and I agree that often you've helpfully removed POV and bias from various articles. This time I think you're stretching too far, especially considering you haven't brought a single source with you after all these weeks.
In conclusion, if you felt I claimed you were writing original research, consider that rescinded. I think you can go on at least using inline templates and raising questions on talk pages about POV issues. And please, adopt a nicer tone. I'm trying to appreciate your zeal for getting this right but you don't come off well at all and it makes a difficult discussion needlessly harder. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:58, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, and also for the gift of sugar, which was a nice gesture. No worries about the delay, I realise you were busy. Besides, as you can see from this, I'm not exactly lightning fast when it comes to replying either.

With regard to what you say, you keep bringing up Catherine of Aragon, despite the fact I've already acknowledged I might have erred on that occasion. I stand over trying to correct the ludicrous idea that we can have any idea at this remove whether CofA was beautiful or not, and particularly the patently untrue suggestion that Shakespeare (who was born after CofA died) described her as such, but I accept that I should have handled it differently. So I repeat my question from last time: are you going to keep bringing it up forever, or can we get back to the discussion in hand? The discussion in hand was about Thomas More.

With respect to your request that I change my tone, I'm sorry if I sound harsh. As I've said several times, I take very personally the suggestion that I tried to publish original research. I'm glad that you've now acknowledged that that accusation is untrue, but your statement (on the Thomas More talk page) that you never said it in the first place does rather undermine the apparent goodwill you showed by rescinding said accusation.

But I'm prepared to offer you the benefit of the doubt, to accept that because of the passage of time you've forgotten the occasion on which you suggested that I'd tried to publish original research. So let me refresh your memory. Here's what you said of my attempt to edit the More page: "It is not the job of editors to philosophize about St. Thomas More." What you meant by "philosophize" might possibly seem open to interpretation but, fortunately, we don't need to do any interpretation. You very helpfully and clearly spelt out what you meant by "philosophize". You'll note that that passage is in blue font, and if you click on it you will be redirected to ... yep, Misplaced Pages's prohibition on the publication of original research.

I hope that jogs your memory. Like I say, I do appreciate the retraction, but perhaps you can see why it doesn't sound entirely sincere when that retraction is along the lines of "If you think I accused you of something then please consider the accusation rescinded (but in fact I never accused you of it in the first place)". Brooklyn Eagle (talk) 05:52, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

PS Further to the above, I note that the person who originally wrote the paragraph that I was objecting to (in the Thomas More article) has come forward to explain himself. He states (with disarming honesty) that he unilaterally decided to "balance" the article because, in his opinion, Marius was not as "reliable" as other sources and did not reflect the "standard" view. Like I say, his honesty is admirable, and he also comes across as genuine and sincere. Unfortunately, he also stated that he was "not sufficiently interested" to find sources to substantiate this opinion, which was based on a "recollection from many years ago". This vindicates what I've been saying all along, namely that the paragraph in question was clearly agenda-driven. An acknowledgement of that would be much appreciated.

Anyway, since the contributor has, by his own admission, done exactly what you accused me of back in October - namely approaching articles with his own opinions and editing accordingly (with few if any sources) - I look forward to you delivering the same lecture to him as you did to me. No doubt you'll tell him that, "it's not up to you, on behalf of the English-speaking world, to say that Marius is unreliable" etc etc.

Finally, it's also interesting that another user has come along and deleted (without any discussion on the talk page) two sourced quotes (one by Marius), dismissing them as "POV verbiage". This is exactly what I did back in September, the edit that you instantly reverted. Or rather, it's almost exactly what I did. The difference being that the stuff I deleted was, as you now acknowledge, improperly sourced in at least one respect (and not at all sourced in most others), whereas this latest edit has removed sources that are 100pc accurately reproduced. Again, I await with interest your lecture. No doubt it will be along the lines of, "In Misplaced Pages, we consult on the talk page before deleting referenced content".

After all, you're completely even-handed, right? You're not, I assume, the sort of person who reverts "incorrect" edits merely because he disagrees with them but ignores equally "incorrect" edits he agrees with. Brooklyn Eagle (talk) 06:00, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

OK, I'm going to answer your accusations on the article's talk page. Don't bother me about this again. Seriously. Don't contact me ever again. Chris Troutman (talk) 07:52, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi everyone, I've noticed that a few of you haven't updated your totals as several reviews have passed but on the backlog page, it still says that the article is under review or on hold.

Please update your totals and continue to do so until February 1. If the status of a review is under review or on hold according to the backlog page, even though the article may have passed/failed, it will not count towards your final total.

For those that made pledges during the drive, the final donation amount will be determined sometime in February.

Chris, I am having trouble with a web page. Some one keeps adding a lengthy summary to a table Shipping Wars and I keep deleting it. can you rectify the problem? Mphsmeister (talk) 21:15, 24 January 2014 (UTC)memphismeister

OK. For future reference, when you have problems like this discuss it on the talk page. Placing warnings on talk pages is the best ammunition you can give sysops to block a problem user. Sometimes a talk page discussion resolves the issue. I've put warnings on the talk pages of the offending IPs. If the behavior continues, apply vandalism templates (level 2 up to level 4) until a sysop is needed. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:36, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/Michael Tollemache

Hello Chris Troutman. I am Tom Bateman, an independent art history (& general) research assistant to Michael Tollemache and, although not employed by him, I therefore should be classed as a connected party. Nonetheless, I believe the BLP text submitted is indeed neutral and verifiable with No Original Research included. If I am incorrect, which I fully recognize as likely, I will address those issues but only after dealing with your comment as to the notability of the subject.

The reason for submitting the draft is because in WP SEARCH for Michael Tollemache one is directed to Edward Tollemache his nephew where there is an invitation to create the page "Michael Tollemache" and because Michael Tollemache is mentioned in two WP Bios - Edward Tollemache and Frederick Fermor-Hesketh, 2nd Baron Hesketh.

I submit he is notable on the following grounds: 1. he purchased the most expensive book in the world and is named in WP The Birds of America see under 'Recent Sales', which sale is also mentioned in Frederick Fermor-Hesketh, 2nd Baron Hesketh; 2. he has been written and talked about in the media including the BBC as cited in the draft submission and has arranged for important old master paintings to be acquired by many public collections both in the UK and elsewhere in the world - see or 3. he has contributed over several decades to the political debates involving the European Fine Art Trade and the British Art Market at government level, and acts as an occasional British government advisor on the export of works of art and acceptance in lieu of capital taxes - all as cited in the draft submission; 4. he is invited to talk to Societies on subjects relating to art history worldwide. For example, he spoke only last week to the Anglo-Indonesian Society in London on the 19th century Javanese artist Raden Saleh, having co-organized the 'Raden Saleh Colloquium' in London in 2008 and 2009 see notice of which will shortly appear on the website . Personal comment (NOT a ground for notebility, but relevant nonetheless), the chairman of the Anglo-Indonesian Society informed us that, when he accessed WP SEARCH Michael Tollemache for information for his introduction last week, WP redirected him to Edward Tollemache where Michael Tollemache is cited (correctly) as having stood as proxy for the Prince of Wales; that in itself is not an issue, but it gave said Chairman a rather odd slant to his art-historian guest speaker! I look forward to hearing on the subjects acceptability (or not) as WP 'notable'. Tom Bateman signed MichaelTollemache9329 (talk) 15:01, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

@MichaelTollemache9329: Sorry for the delay. When I saw your wall of text to me I decided to move on to other things and reply when I felt composed. Your exposition has left me in a terse mood so here's my terse reply.
First, the point you make at the end is really your motivation. Your boss went to a speaking engagement and the host lazily looked at Misplaced Pages and found an entry about someone else. This is not our concern and you are not the only person suffering this sort of problem.
Second, I am not the only person to decline your submission, so convincing any one editor is not the best manner to solve the problem.
Third, my decline was based on Misplaced Pages notability guidelines. Your boss is notable for one event, which doesn't pass muster. Furthermore, even having truthful accounts from other websites about speaking engagements does not make him notable, either. Those facts are verifiable but not notable. Perhaps if your boss was mentioned in journalistic sources like The Daily Telegraph or The Guardian we might assume more notability.
Finally, you have a conflict of interest. Your editing of an article like this is discouraged and has to be supervised, if not prohibited.
I am always flattered that people think enough of Misplaced Pages to feel that they, their client, or their idol needs/deserves an article. A lot of editors have been working on improving the reliability of this wiki so that it has the weight people like you attach to it. Multiple accounts

Hi Chris, first thanks for accepting my article on Tove Dahlberg. You also noted that I have used multiple accounts. Yes and no. I originally used one for English, one for Swedish and one for Wikimedia. It used to be that there was no alternative. Then I have had a long discussion during the last couple of weeks with a couple of editors re my accounts since one of them is too easily recognizable. We jave jointly determined that from now on I will use only Klättermusen. Klättermusen (talk) 17:40, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for January 31

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Kate Fodor, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Variety (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Misplaced Pages's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Richard Keech

I have added Murder of Nicholas Candy to the deletion discussion. I made up my mind (a bit late) that the two articles should be discussed together. Could you take another look at the AfD? Thank you, —Kusma (t·c) 20:19, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

I would like assistance!

I am trying to post my page on Sofloantonio. He's a YouTuber that owns two large channels. Is there a way you can help? Want the source too? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Omniamedia (talkcontribs) 05:59, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

@Omniamedia: No, I can't help. There are lots of YouTubers out there but very few meet notability criteria. As you may have noticed, I had a hand in removing SoFloAntonio (Antonio Lievano) from Misplaced Pages for this very reason. While I understand that your company, Omnia Media, wants to help advertise "talent" (if you can call them that), this is not allowed. Wiki-PR and WikiExperts have already been banned from using Misplaced Pages to advertise. Unless you give this up, your company will be banned from Misplaced Pages, too. Thanks for your help

First of all sorry for my English, it's not enough good yet. I will try to improve my contributions following the instructions you send me. I usually write in the catalan wikipedia, but as English is the most important language in the world I try to enlarge your wikipedia with the things I know well from my homeland. Thanks again! Dead links rechecked and verified live

Firstly, I'm sorry if this is not the correct way to reply to a comment you left on my article submission https://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Hao_Zhou. I rechecked the South China Morning Post and Courier-Mail links and found that the articles cited are there and available. I do not know if you are able to check screenshots but here are the articles I accessed just now: http://snag.gy/hvGPr.jpg and http://snag.gy/nTotF.jpg. I hope these are helpful to you. Thank you! Shahmatwu (talk) 03:36, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

@Shahmatwu: Thanks for following up on this. It must have been a temporary network outage on my end. As you can see, I've accepted the article. Good work! Chris Troutman (talk) 04:00, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Ahmad Kamyabi Mask

Updated DYK queryOn 4 February 2014, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Ahmad Kamyabi Mask, which you recently nominated. Battle of the Somme

I looked at the edit history for Battle of the Somme over that Macmillan reference, and I think your edit to move the material out of the lead and into the main body of the article was a good first step (it may still be undue weight there). I was kind of expecting to find a section on the talk page discussing this, but it seems the only discussion so far has been in edit summaries, at WT:MILHIST, and on user talk pages (this one and the one for the editor you warned). Kind of ironic, seeing as the advice given to that editor (who did clearly need warning) was to, um, start a talk page section about the edit. I think the last time I came across something like that, I did leave a warning, but I also created a talk page section and directed the editor to it for discussion. On a wider note, this article is one that should (IMO) be one that MILHIST editors and others attempt to return to featured status over the next two years, difficult though that might be. Carcharoth (talk) 01:41, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

@Carcharoth: Yes, you're probably right about the talk page issue. Sometimes I've started talk pages if I had to repeatedly revert. Often I just hit up the user to notify them and then allow them to bring the issue to the talk page if they really think they have merit. In this case, I was responding to the MILHIST call for help, so I simply wanted to stop the edit warring.
Yes, the current WWI backlog drive should ideally catch this article, too. I already have a work list of vital articles that lack sources so this article isn't on that list. I will look at it, though, and see what can't be done to improve it.
You're the first sitting arb I've ever interacted with so I'm glad it's on my talk page instead of on the drama boards. Thanks for contacting me. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:19, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to 7th Airborne Command and Control Squadron may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 ""s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

Moshe Mann

Hi Chris,

I noticed that you nominated the article Moshe Mann for deletion, and I have made some effort to expand the article to include additional details and sources. I was hoping to expand more, but the book sources I want to use will not be available to me in the coming days. I expanded it to make sure to prevent deletion, but now I have noticed that it might be eligible for DYK. Therefore I am asking you that if you are satisfied with the additions, please withdraw the nomination so that I can nominate for DYK. If not, please let me know what else is missing.

Nevermind, I noticed that you actually withdrew a few minutes before I sent this message! —Ynhockey 12:49, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

tool use

Feel free to examine my tool use. It's lighter than that of almost any other active admin. I almost universally choose warnings and advice over blocks. Sometimes harsher words or actions are required to avoid real harm to real people. Last night was one of those times. See my talk page if you'd like to see a more complete summary of events.
