A series of shootings in Ottawa, Canada began shortly before 10:00 EDT on October 22, 2014, when one gunman shot a Canadian Forces soldier outside the Canadian National War Memorial. The gunman then proceeded into the Canadian Parliament buildings, where he was reportedly shot dead by Kevin Vickers, the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Canadian House of Commons.
Subsequent to these initial events, Ottawa's downtown core was put under lockdown, including Canada's Parliament and the University of Ottawa. The Ottawa Police Service stated they are investigating three shootings: one at the Canadian National War Memorial, one at Parliament Hill, and one near the Rideau Centre. The attack came a day after two Canadian Forces soldiers were struck by an ISIL sympathizer in a car, killing one of them, and after Canada raised its terror threat level from low to medium.
The slain solder was a reservist from Hamilton, Ontario and a member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was taken to hospital and reported by Minister Jason Kenny as having died.
