Blackpink (Hangul: 블랙핑크), stylized as BLACKPINK or BLΛƆK PIИK, is a South Korean girl group formed in 2016 by YG Entertainment. The group consists of four members: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. They are a multinational group, having members from South Korea, New Zealand, Australia and Thailand. They debuted with their first single, Square One on August 8, 2016.

History

Pre-debut

On June 1, 2016, YG Entertainment began to reveal members of their upcoming girl group, starting from Jennie, who previously collaborated with artists of the same agency. On June 8, the second member was revealed to be Lisa, who was first introduced in 2012 and featured as a model for YG Entertainment's clothing line NONA9ON. On the following week, June 15, they revealed the third member Jisoo, the eldest of the group, who modeled for various brands, appeared in several music videos, and made a cameo appearance in KBS's The Producers. Rosé was revealed to be the last member on June 22, who collaborated with G-Dragon in the song "Without You" in 2012.

Prior to debut, YG Entertainment uploaded a dance practice video of the group on their official Youtube channel where the girls had showcased their intense dancing skills through their cover of Rihanna's famous song "Bitch Better Have My Money", which Parris Goebel choreographed. As soon as the teaser image for the dance practice video was revealed on yg-life.com, the agency's official blog, it had been a talk for all the fans who have been waiting for the group's debut and for those who were curious about their talents.

Finally, on June 29, YG Entertainment uploaded group photos of the members and confirmed Blackpink as the name of their new four-member girl group.

The agency confirmed that the debut would take place in late July, however, the debut was postponed to August 8.

2016: Debut with their first single album Square One

On July 29, 2016, YG Entertainment revealed an image confirming the group's debut on August 8 at 8 PM (KST).

From August 3, individual teaser images of the group members were revealed; starting from Rosé, Jennie, Lisa, to Jisoo, along with new group images. On August 5, YG Entertainment released a promotional image that revealed the debut song title, "Boombayah". "Boombayah" was produced by Teddy Park, and written by Teddy Park and Bekuh Boom. The music video was directed by Seo Hyun Seung who also directed "I Am the Best" by 2NE1 and "Fantastic Baby" by Big Bang. The second title track to be announced was "Whistle", which was produced by Teddy Park and Future Bounce while the lyrics were written by Teddy Park and Bekuh Boom.

On August 8, a promotional image was released announcing the title of the first single album, Square One. It was also revealed that the group will be having a debut showcase that will be °broadcast live on Naver's V-App at 3 PM (KST), wherein the music videos for "Boombayah" and Whistle" were unveiled to the public. Both singles were officially released digitally via Korean music portals and on iTunes at 8 PM (KST).

YG reported that Blackpink will not have a leader, because of how all the girls have been so close during training together. YG hopes to see the members make decisions as a group.

While recording for their debut stage Jennie suffered an injury to her ankle.

It has been confirmed that the group's first ever live music show broadcast as their official stage debut will be aired on August 14, 2016 on SBS' Inkigayo.
