Seth C. Rich was fatally shot around 4 AM in Wahington D.C. on July 10, 2016. He was 27 years old.
Early life, education, and employment
Rich was a native of Omaha, Nebraska, and graduate of Omaha Central High School. After high school, he majored in history and political science at Creighton University, from which he graduated in 2011.
As of July 2016, Rich was Deputy Director of "Data-for-Voter Protection/Expansion" at the Democratic National Committee (DNC), having worked at the DNC for two years. He was developing a computer application for voters to locate polling stations.
Potentially a botched robbery
Rich was shot twice near his home in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D.C. in the vicinity of Howard University, on July 10, 2016. Police were alerted to the gunfire at 4:20 AM by an automated gunfire locator called ShotSpotter.
He was found conscious but later died in the hospital. Police stated that Rich may have been killed in an attempted robbery; none of his belongings were taken. A standard reward of $25,000 was offered from the police for information about the death.
Following up on the reward offered by the police, WikiLeaks announced a reward of an additional $20,000 for information leading to a conviction. After receiving the news of WikiLeaks' reward, the victim's father, Joel Rich, said "I hope the additional money helps find out who did this." He also said WikiLeaks was "playing a game". WikiLeaks issued a statement neither confirming nor denying an association with Rich.
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued a statement mourning the loss and praising Rich's work "to protect the most sacred right we share as Americans — the right to vote." Hillary Clinton spoke of this fatality during a speech advocating expansion of gun control regulation. She added, "Surely we can agree that weapons of war have no place on the streets of America".
