"Whatever the Case May Be"

"Whatever the Case May Be" is the twelfth episode of the first season of Lost. The episode focus on Kate's background, and was directed by Jack Bender and written by Damon Lindelof and Jennifer Johnson. It first aired on January 5, 2005 on ABC.

Plot

Kate takes an interest in a locked case that she and Sawyer find while swimming. Kate refuses to tell Sawyer what is inside the case, so he takes it for himself.

At the beach, the tide moves further inland, and the survivors scramble to move belongings from the beach before the fuselage is submerged. Shannon confronts Boone what he and Locke are doing in the jungle, to which Boone replies that they are searching for Claire. Sayid seeks Shannon's help in translating Rousseau's notes. Rose comforts Charlie by telling him that he did everything he could, and that Claire's kidnapping was not his fault.

Sawyer continues to try to get into the case, and finally he drops it off a cliff, but it remains intact. Kate tries to take it, but Sawyer gets it back. He tells her that he will give the case to her if she tells him what's inside. She refuses.

In a flashback, Kate opening a bank account using an alias. Three masked men enter and attempt to rob the bank. One of them pulls Kate into a back room and is revealed that she was part of the robbery plan. The man smacks Kate to make it look like she's an innocent civilian and demands that the bank manager give him a key to a specific safety deposit box.

It belonged to Edward Mars, the United States Marshal who accompanied Kate on the flight and was buried with the key. They dig up the body and she tries to palm the key, but Jack catches her. To get the case back Jack tells Sawyer that if he does not hand over the case, no more antibiotics will be given to treat his knife wound. Shannon becomes upset when Sayid claims her translations do not make any sense.

In a flashback, the manager to open a safety deposit box. Kate then shoots her partner in the leg.

At the caves, they open the case to find the items, along with a small, metal airplane in an envelope. When pressured, Kate says it belonged to the man she loved — and the man she killed. Rose maintains faith that her husband is still alive and she prays with Charlie. Shannon later recognizes the notes as lyrics to the song played over the credits of a "cartoon fish movie".
