The 2017 Barcelona attack occurred on 17 August 2017 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, when a van was driven into pedestrians in La Rambla, killing 14 and injuring at least 100. Two suspects then fled on foot. A person was stabbed to death by one of the fleeing attackers. A woman was killed in a related attack in Cambrils and another in Alcanar.

Police said two men were arrested in connection with the attack; another was reported killed in a shootout with police. In Ripoll, a man in his 20s was alleged to have rented the van, but told police his ID was stolen. Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack through its Amaq News Agency.

An explosion occurred the night before the attack in the Catalan town of Alcanar. It flattened a building and killed a woman. Josep Lluís Trapero, head of the Mossos d'Esquadra, the police force of Catalonia, said it was related to the ramming. Nine hours after the attack, police killed five people in a shootout in Cambrils who were believed to be planning a coordinated suicide bombing terrorist attack.

The attacks were the deadliest in Spain since the March 2004 Madrid train bombings and the deadliest in Barcelona since the 1987 Hipercor bombing.

Attack

Distance covered by the van, during the attack.

At 16:56 CEST (UTC+2), a white Fiat Talento van was driven onto the pavement of Barcelona's La Rambla, crashing into pedestrians for about 550 m between Plaça de Catalunya and Liceu and stopping on a Joan Miró mosaic. The driver then fled.

The first reports stated there had been two deaths and that dozens of people had been injured. The vehicle was reportedly hired in the neighbouring location of Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, along with a similar van, considered a getaway vehicle and found by 19:00 in Vic.

In a police press conference at 19:00 local time, a spokesperson confirmed the terrorist nature of the event, one dead and 32 injured (10 seriously).

At about 20:20 local time, the Catalan government confirmed 13 people were dead and at least 50 were injured. A suspect was in custody. Catalonia's president, Carles Puigdemont, later announced another arrest.

After the attack, the attacker stabbed a civilian to death and stole his car.

Witnesses said the vehicle zigzagged at high speed down Las Ramblas, ramming pedestrians and cyclists.

Barricade ramming

About two hours later, a white Ford Focus rammed a police barricade in Avinguda Diagonal and gunshots were exchanged, leaving an officer injured. The vehicle fled to neighbouring location Sant Just Desvern and the driver abandoned the car near the building known as Walden 7. The police found a man in the rear seat wounded with a bladed weapon, who died shorty afterwards. The man was a factory worker, and police believe it was one of the Ramblas attackers escaping the scene.

Alcanar explosion

On 16 August, the day prior to the attack, an explosion destroyed a house in Alcanar. The explosion killed a woman, injured six other people and caused substantial damage to neighboring houses. Police initially thought it was an accidental gas explosion but now believe that stockpiled explosives accidentally went off. A Moroccan man was injured in the explosion and taken to hospital, where he will be questioned by police. Twenty canisters of butane and propane were found inside the house. A second explosion occurred at the same location during excavation, which may have been caused by a spark from a backhoe igniting a gas canister among the debris. At least nine people were injured, with one police officer in critical condition.

Cambrils attack

Early on 18 August in Cambrils, an Audi A3 automobile was driven into a crowd of pedestrians before it overturned and its occupants started attacking bystanders with knives, one of whom died of her injuries. A policewoman was also injured in the attack. A nearby policeman shot and killed four of the assailants and a fifth died of his injuries later. The men were linked to the Barcelona attack according to the police. Some wore fake explosive belts. A civilian was killed and six others were injured, including a Cuban tourist and a police officer.

A total of 16 people were killed: 14 in La Rambla attack, 1 in Alcanar, and 1 in Cambrils. Over 100 people from over 34 nationalities were injured, including 15 people who were critically injured.

Suspects

The Fiat Talento van was apparently rented by a Ripoll resident of "Moroccan origin" who is a convicted criminal. It is not clear if he is in any way involved in the attack. After the man was captured, he alleged his documentation had been stolen by his younger brother, Moussa Oukabir, who is the prime suspect as the driver of the killer vehicle. Moussa Oukabir, who is 17 years old, has had a NIE (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero, i.e., Identity Number as a Foreigner in Spain) since 2005.

Moussa Oukabir wrote online about his desire to "kill the infidels." Newsweek reported that "infidels" refers to non-Muslims. The Spanish daily El Mundo reported that Oukabir posted: "I would kill all the infidels, would only allow the Muslims who follow the religion."

Police said two suspects were arrested in Ripoll and Alcanar. They said the driver had not been arrested, and a manhunt is underway.

The ISIS-linked Amaq News Agency claimed that the attack was carried out in response to its calls for targeting states in the anti-ISIS coalition, of which Spain is a member.

A day after the attack, the number of suspects arrested had risen to four. The third arrest was made in Ripoll.

There are reportedly five suspects killed by Spanish police in an operation resulting from an alleged terror plot separate from the main attack, on Friday, August 18th. Spain's public broadcaster, RTVE, reported that the suspects may have been carrying suicide explosive belts.
