Ellen van Neerven (born 1990) is an Indigenous Australian writer and poet. Her first book, Heat and Light, won the 2013 Queensland Literary Awards' David Unaipon Award for unpublished Indigenous writers, the 2016 NSW Premier's Literary Award's Indigenous Writers Prize and was shortlisted for the Stella Prize in 2015. Her second book, the poetry collection Comfort Food, was published in 2016. One of van Neerven's stories, Confidence Game, was featured in SBS podcast series, True Stories, in 2015.
Early life
Van Neerven was born in 1990 to Dutch and Aboriginal parents. She studied Creative Writing at the Queensland University of Technology.
Personal life
Van Neerven is a Yugambeh woman. She is openly queer. She lives in Brisbane, Australia.
Online abuse by students
In October 2017, the poem 'Mango' by Van Neervan from her text Comfort Food (2016) was included as part of a question in the New South Wales High School Certificate English examination. Abusive messages were then posted to the HSC Discussion Group Facebook page criticising the poem and Van Neervan as an author. Van Neervan was also contacted directly by students on her personal social media accounts. A spokesperson from New South Wales Education Standards Authority condemned the abuse as cyber-bullying and stated that the NSW curriculum works to promote tolerance and diversity.
