CBDunkerson RFA Thanks
Thank you for your support vote, despite the limited 'Category talk' experience, on my RFA. The final result was a successful request based on 111 support and 1 oppose. --CBDunkerson 11:19, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Radiant's talk page
The context here is that Xiong has a storied history of making not simply personal attacks, but personal threats. Given that, I interpret his use of the phrase "dance on your grave" much differently than I'd interpret, say, yours. Nandesuka 02:40, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- OK, good enough for me. Thanks for the reply. —Doug Bell 03:40, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
Food for thought
What would you say to the idea of an RfA counting bot that would check all current RfA pages every 15 min or so and update the vote tallies accordingly. As long as people use correct syntax and keep votes between the sections and number them I think it would work pretty well. Thanks for keeping the tally updated by the way -- Tawker 04:59, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
- I assume you know about User:Dragons flight/RFA summary? While the bot that maintains this page doesn't update the counts on the RfA pages, I imagine it would be fairly simple to add that to it. —Doug Bell 05:03, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I think I'll send a request in for that, I think it might be of use, thanks for your fast reply! (and sorry about my slow one, I need to update my watchlist :)) -- Tawker 00:54, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Kusma's RfA
Hello, Doug Bell! Thank you for your support in my recent successful request for adminship. If you ever have problems that you could use my assistance with or see me doing stupid things with my new buttons, don't hesitate to contact me. Happy editing, Kusma (討論) 02:40, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Main page
Sort of like Wikipedias front cover...Retreat of glaciers since 1850 will be on the Main page on 4/18/06 ...so don't change that channel.--MONGO 11:22, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
SuggestBot predicts that you will enjoy editing some of these articles. Have fun!
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Misplaced Pages better -- thanks for helping.
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.
P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 13:32, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Thank you
Thank you! Hello Doug Bell. Thank you for your support in my RfA! It passed with a final tally of 91/3/5. I am quite humbled and pleased by the community's show of confidence in me. If you need help or just want to talk, let me know. Cheers! -- Fang Aili |
Admin
You have plenty of technical expertise and edit broadly enough...do you seek adminship?--MONGO 09:43, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking. I'm going to be away at a conference in mid-May, but after that I would be pleased to accept a nomination. I have a few things I'm working on I'd like to complete first, and by my own standards, I should wait until I have at least four months editing here.
- I've been divided on whether I would want to be an admin, as mostly I'm interested in editing and other things I don't need admin tools to accomplish. However, it would be nice to be able to take care of little things like those you just did for me (and thanks for that), and I would be more involved in the sometimes tedious work of renaming/recategorizing categories, but you need to be an admin to do that. I would also not mind helping out with some of the chores around here, particularly at WP:TfD, WP:RfD and WP:MfD. I'm a little turned off by the status issue behind a lot of people's desire to be an admin, but observing the many helpful admins I've encountered, I can see that the tools could be useful. —Doug Bell 10:04, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Rockero's RFA
Since you voted oppose "per freakofnurture", would you consider changing your vote to match that editor's "Tentatively oppose"?
You can read how I feel on the issue at Rockero's RFA. I would also like to request that consider moving your vote to Neutral. I will admit that both the narrowness of subject matter, and sparseness of Misplaced Pages namespace edits are weaknesses that would give me pause and might cause me to vote oppose for an editor that I was unfamilar with. I have, however, seen Rockero make many fine edits on the Southern California topics that are on my watchlist, and I think that he would make a good administrator for the English-language Misplaced Pages. 05:43, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Template:Diagram needed
Hi, the conversion of Template:Diagram needed to #if broke the template. I suspect this is due to the fact that a qif is used with only an else and no then. I don't have time to look into this right now. I have reverted the template to a working version for now. Both times the template has been converted to #if, it stopped adding articles with the template to Category:Misplaced Pages requested diagrams. Instead, articles with "cat=none" specified were added to the category (and they shouldn't be).--Srleffler 22:28, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Hate Mail
I guess we just disagree on the broadness of the definition. Agree that it wasn't the best discretion to post the e-mail though. Cheers -- Samir (the scope) धर्म 21:42, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Citations
Hi, you recently participated in discussion on Referencing on Misplaced Pages talk:Footnotes. You commented on having a controversy about retreat of glaciers since 1850, where the article was converted to a system against consensus of the editors on that page. I have recently begun to have a similar problem on J. K. Rowling. Since the discussion that was generated on Misplaced Pages talk:Footnotes does not seem to have alleviated the problem, I am preparing an RfC to attempt to generate further discussion from the community. I would like to ask if you would help me by preparing a summary of the controversy surrounding the glacier article. I am making the same request to User:MONGO. Thank you. Ëvilphoenix 19:07, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Wait, I don't think you mentioned the Glacier article specifically actually. Anyway, I am preparing an RfC and when I am done I would appreciate if you would participate in the discussion. Best regards, Ëvilphoenix 19:09, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Little RfA note
Hi,
I see that Mongo has already asked, so I'll just chime in to add that I look forward to the day when you take up the admin mop. This place will run a little smoother with an additional sane admin. :) I am especially impressed with your reservations regarding adminship, and salute your dedication in taking up the mop despite them. (I share the reservations, but not the dedication! ;) Best wishes, Xoloz 18:15, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/The Sims Resource
I reverted your vote on the page above since it was made after the discussion was already closed. Please don't do this. The page clearly states "The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the debate. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the article's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this page.". Thanks. -- Hirudo 20:17, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- I hadn't noticed it was closed until after saving. I suppose I should have reverted myself at that point. —Doug Bell 20:22, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
RfC/Cyde
I see that you added an endorsement of my statement about the RfC. I appreciate that you agree with my concerns and analysis there. If you wish to endorse the general RfC characterization as well (mostly written by Evilphoenix, a bit by MONGO, very little by me), you might want to sign as certifier as well. Technically, two certifiers is perfectly adequate, but more tends to show support for the issue. FWIW, Evilphoenix opined that the RfC was premature, since s/he was more optimistic about the issues being resolved more informally; s/he's on wikibreak now, and may or may not add a signature when s/he comes back to WP.
I think it's mildly unfortunate that a number of editors seem to be under the wrong impression that this is a vote on whether m:Cite.php or {ref_harvard} is universally better, rather than a discussion about consensus and WP process. Moreover, I don't think such a hypothetical vote has any right answer: neither style is purely better, each have pros and cons. Anyway, thanks. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 21:31, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't add as a certifier because I wasn't directly involved in the dispute. I do, however, fully support your statement and analysis of the process, so that's what I endorsed. —Doug Bell 21:34, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- OK. Sounds good. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 21:37, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Just another RFA thank you note
Dear Doug, I appreciate your vote and your kind words in my RFA. It has passed with an unexpected 114/2/2 and I feel honored by this show of confidence in me. Cheers! ←Humus sapiens 03:33, 26 April 2006 (UTC) |
My RfA
Thank you for voting at my RFA. Even though you did not vote for me, your counsel was appreciated. In the next few months, I intend to work on expanding my involvement in other namespaces and try a few different subjects than in the past. - CTSWyneken |
Usage of "if" template
Take a look at Template:Infobox Minor Planet; when an image is specified, such as with 1 Ceres, there is an extraneous "|-" that appears in the row right before the image itself. How to fix it? Urhixidur 16:55, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- I fixed it by starting the #if: for the image on a new line. —Doug Bell 21:00, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
rfa
I wanted to stop by and thank you for your constructive criticism of my RFA. It's helped, and is helping, to improve me as a wikipedian and an editor. I look forward to gaining your support in the future. Until then, keep on keepin on. ⇒ SWATJester Aim Fire! 19:32, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
Portal:Box-header
The current version has "lost" the margin between text and border within the box. Is this intentional? How can this be fixed? Awolf002 02:48, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- It wasn't intentional. I think someone has already reverted my changes, which is fine. The problem I was trying to fix is one I already fixed on all the portal pages (before breaking it with my latest change) and which I have now fixed on the non-portal pages using the same approach.
- FWIW, the way I fixed the edit link (which at least on WinXP IE was displaying partially out of the right side of the box) was to enclose the box (header+content+footer) in a <div style="width:100%"> tag. I don't know why the change I made to the box header would affect the margin as it used conditional template logic that allowed additional parameters to be specified that gave the box width—without these parameters being specified, there should have been no change in the display of the header. But I didn't end up using the optional parameters, so it's better that they've been reverted. —Doug Bell 18:20, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
GML and GML Application Schemas
Doug - I left a comment on the GML talk page. Please would you re-instate the GML Application Schemas page.
Simon Cox (dr shorthair)
dr_shorthair @ westnet.com.au
- Although I proposed the change, I didn't make the change. Cdc changed the page to a redirect, and since Cdc says s/he's a geographer, I think you should work it out with him/her. —Doug Bell 18:29, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
I find your lack of faith... disturbing.
Dear Doug Bell,
- Thanks for voting on my RFA! I appreciate your comments and constructive criticism, for every bit helps me become a better Wikipedian. I've started working on the things you brought up, and I hope that next time, things run better; who knows, maybe one day we'll be basking on the shore of Admintopia together. Thanks and cheers, _-M o P-_ 22:02, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- I find your "thank you" note disturbing. —Doug Bell 14:54, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
Off-wiki personal attacks poll
Since you have previously participated in discussions about the off-wiki NPA policy, I wanted to let you know about a quick opinion poll that is now posted on the Talk page there. Your input is appreciated!
- Strange coincidence, but I was just look at that... —Doug Bell 21:56, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
Impeachment article imbroglio
I wonder if I could get your opinion at: Talk:Rationales provided by advocates of the impeachment of George W. Bush#What to do post-AfD?.
Oh, utterly unrelated: your "Leave a new message" box always throws me off into thinking I have new messages. Maybe a different color from the one that announces an editor's own messages would be better. LotLE×talk 17:24, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Diagram tool
hello doug i'm from argentina, my native language is spanish, but i'll try to express myself: i saw great drawings of database models in an article here: "entity relationship model", i would like to know the program you used to build them. Please write to solcin@fibertel.com.ar, i would really appreaciate it.

Dungeon Master
Doug,
Sorry for contacting you in this manner but I'm hoping you can help me. I'm currently researching a feature on the making of Dungeon Master and was wondering if you could answer a few short questions? If so, could you contact me at: damien.mcferran@googlemail.com
Many thanks in advance

Atari ST Sundog question
As a younger version of myself, I purchased Sundog for my Atari ST. After putting in many hours and eagerly anticipating further progress in the game, it began crashing, especially to a red screen.
Unsure of the cause of the problem or how to remedy it, I gave up on my dreams of finishing the game.
A couple of years later, I saw a new copy of Sundog on sale for a very reasonable price and picked it up. Again, after putting in many hours the same issue emerged.
A couple of years ago I got an ST emulator and grabbed a Sundog ROM from somewhere (this all took place in international waters by the way during my stint as ambassador of The Moon so I enjoyed full diplomatic immunity from Earth's copyright laws, etc. blah blah click I Agree to proceed) but it was also unplayable (most likely entirely unrelated to the original code). (The point being that I *STILL* can't finish Sundog.)
Do you know anything about this Crash-To-Red problem? Were any reports about it ever received? Our ST seemed pretty stable otherwise. (Operating System on ROM FTW.) -- 20:23, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- The red screen indicates a copy protection failure. You probably purchased a pirated copy. —Doug Bell 09:17, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Edgewood Scorecard
Dear Doug Bell, I am working on an article about Edgewood Country Club which features a designed private course. I saw how you formatted the scorecard for Pinehurst No.2 using color and was wondering if you could do the same for the scorecard in the said article. I already have yardages, handicaps and other info posted, but wish to use your format to improve the article's quality. Thanks, Jeeps2009
- You can look at the instructions on the Template:Golf18 template and at how the template is used on the Pinehurst scorecard. I think it's fairly straight-forward to modify that for any other golf course. —Doug Bell 07:12, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Template:Ref harv
Doug, You're the sole author... I have a couple questions. Does this format.. superscripted text in parentheses such as , that links to a note indexed as .. does it exist in the real world? Can you go to the library and pick up a major journal referenced in this way?
I am working on developing my philosophy regarding citation templates. At this point, my position is this:
- The guiding principle should be to help new users know which format is best to use, and why.
- only formatting systems which are verifiably in common usage (by some discipline, in some country) should be offered in Template space.
- As a long-term goal, every citation template should have some sort of note regarding where it is used, and by whom, and thus giving an idea how and where it should be used in Misplaced Pages.
I have never seen the format you used in Template:Ref harv in any journal etc. By my current (in progress, under development) ideas regarding citation temples, this one should probably be deleted (unless it is in common use in journals that I have never seen, which is extremely possible).
I would appreciate your feedback on these thoughts.
Thanks --Ling.Nut 22:42, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
