Bully, also known as Canis Canem Edit in the PAL region, is a video game released by Rockstar Vancouver for Sony PlayStation 2 on October 17, 2006 in the USA, and October 25 in the UK. An Xbox version was planned but has since been cancelled for undisclosed reasons . The game takes place in a fictional reform school called Bullworth Academy. The motto of the school, "Canis Canem Edit", is Latin for dog eat dog. The game will also be available as a special edition that includes a limited edition comic book, and a dodgeball of the same style as the ones used in the game, with the word "Bully" engraved on it. It is unknown whether there will be a special edition for other markets.

A press release by Take-Two Interactive, publishers of the game, states, "As a troublesome schoolboy, you'll laugh and cringe as you stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks on malicious kids, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school, Bullworth Academy."

Plot synopsis

Gameplay

Early information released by Take-Two Interactive seemed to indicate that the player would be taking the role of a bully, and screenshots printed in Electronic Gaming Monthly showed the player-controlled antagonist administering a "swirlie" and throwing a punch at another student. However, a new trailer in 2006 suggested this idea was abandoned and instead the player is in control of a new student Jimmy Hopkins standing up against bullies.

The released trailer shows Jimmy engaging in a wide variety of activities, running from bullies, dealing with teachers, and exploring the school. The game appears to be heavily story driven with a wide cast of both male and female characters, including the stern looking Principal Crabblesnitch, popular cheerleaders, and faculties of varying personalities.

The game uses an Advanced GTA San Andreas Engine through Renderware, completely changing all the programming codes to make the gameplay different. The fighting combat is similar to another Rockstar Games title, The Warriors. What also makes the game engine unique is Rockstar Vancouver tends to avoid using more than one model of the NPC's with the exception of pedestrians.

Cliques

Like every school, Bullworth Academy has its various cliques among the student body. Depending on the choices he makes, Jimmy can make friends or enemies of the various cliques on campus. In keeping with American high school stereotypes, most students Jimmy deals with will fall into one of six cliques. A member of a certain clique can be identified by their unique clothes (not unlike gang colors):

  • Nerds: Wear Green "Astronomy club" vests
  • Preppies: Wear Light Blue
  • Bullies: Wear plain white shirts
  • Jocks: Wear Sports Jackets
  • Greasers: Wear Blue with a black leather or denim jacket
  • Townies: Wear regular clothes

Weapons

Note: The weapons in the game are non-lethal weapons that are made for fun.

  • Slingshot: The most fundamental weapon in Jimmy's arsenal. It has the ability to fire pellets. If the fire button is held down then the strength in the shot is increased. The slingshot can have its accuracy improved when playing dodgeball in the gym. A sniping modification is added after helping Earnest in "The Candidate". The slingshot is the only weapon not taken away by teachers, police, or prefects. (infinite ammo)
  • Firecrackers: Firecrackers can be self-made after Chemistry 1. To make them Jimmy must go to his dorm room and use his chemistry set. Firecrackers are very powerful weapons that deal a lot of damage to opponents. If thrown too close to Jimmy then they can damage him as well. When thrown at an enemy the instantly explode on them, hurting them. (5 ammo)
  • Stink Bombs: Stink Bombs can be made in Chemistry 2. To make them Jimmy must go to his dorm room and use his chemistry set. Stink boms do not deal damage to people. Instead it is a nuissance. When thrown the stink Boms crack open and the liquid within it evaporates. The smelly gas causes people to start coughing and preoccupies them. (5 ammo)
  • Itching Powder: Itching powder can be made in Chemistry 3. To make them Jimmy must go to his dorm room and use his chemistry set. Itching powder does not deal damge to people. Instead it is a nuissance. When thrown the powder causes a person to begin itching. (5 ammo)
  • Carton of Eggs: A carton of eggs can be retrieved from Jimmy's room or any hideout after "The Eggs", as well as from a general store. The eggs themselves deal no damage. The can hold people back, but are mainly used to start a fight. When the eggs are thrown they crack open on the target and can either make them run away or towards you. (12 ammo)
  • Bag of Marbles: A bag of marbles can be located in several places. The most obvious is in front of the funhouse at the carnival. When thrown the bag releases its marbles making the target slip on them. Jimmy himself can slip on the marbles as well as anyone who steps on them. (5 ammo)
  • Spray Paint: Spray paint is retrieved from the general store or nearby some tagging targets. They are mainly used to tag walls, but can also be used on people. When sprayed the paint goes onto the targets face, blinding them, and forcing them to start covering their eyes. This can scare or anger people. (12 ammo)
  • Bottle Rockets: Bottle rockets can be retrieved from Jimmy's room or any hideout after the "Nerd's Challenge". If Jimmy defeats Fatty's score of 1010 on "Con-Sumo" then he will recieve the rocket launcher. When fired the rocket launcher fires bottle rockets that can instantly knock out most people. The rockets become inaccurate at a certain distance. Football players have the ability to quickly dodge these rockets from a distance as well. If fired close enough the bottles rockets will have a perfect hit. If fired to close then, like the firecrackers, they damge Jimmy. (12 ammo)
  • Spudgun: The spudgun can be retrieved from Jimmy's room or any hideout after "Stronghold Assault". A can of spuds can also be bought from the general store. When fired the spud gun fires a spud at the target. The spud gun can deal a large amount of damge to the target and can knock out most people. The spuds can be dodged by football players from a long enough distance. (8 ammo)

Equipment

  • Skateboard: A skatebord is given to Jimmy by Bucky after "Defend Bucky". The skateboard can do simple tricks such as spinning or an ollie. By pressing the sprint button Jimmy can speed himself up. The skateboard can go down stairs, but not up the stairs.
  • Digital Camera: Jimmy recieves a camera after "Hattrick vs. Galloway". Jimmy initially recieves a simple black and white camera. With the camera Jimmy can go to Photography class. After Photography 3 Jimmy recieves a digital camera, that shoots in color. With the camera Jimmy can save yearbook photos as well as a galley.

Jimmy Hopkins, the main character of Bully
  • Jimmy Hopkins

Bullies

  • Russell Northrop: Cody Melton
The hulking leader of the bullies. Despite his behavior and speech problem, Russell is incredibly strong. After Chapter 1 he becomes a staunch ally of Jimmy's, helping in several missions. He can also be hired to back Jimmy up.
  • Trent
  • Ethan: A black bully.
  • Troy Miller: Evan Weinstein
A bully with a very annoying tough guy voice.

Nerds

The nerds are easy to spot. They wear green and generally have bad posture and grooming.

  • Earnest: Jesse Tendler
Leader of the nerds and would-be class president. He has problems dealing with the jocks during his campaign. He also seems to be going through puberty, as can be verified from when he makes Jimmy take some lewd pictures of Mandy, the cheerleader (while badly veiling the idea as part of his plan to overthrow the jocks).
  • Algie: Brett Tabisel
Short for 'Algernon'. A tubby nerd/mama's-boy with a weak bladder and strange interests. This has saddled him with the name "Pee Stain", and he is considered the least cool kid in the entire school. He also has a fetish for blonde women and his clothes don't seem to fit. Easy to spot due to the fact that he rarely zips his pants up.
  • Melvin O'Conner: Charlie Saxton
A pudgy nerd, Melvin's diverse interests include medieval theater, chess, astronomy, and table top role playing games. His favorite game is Grottos and Gremlins, a play on Dungeons and Dragons. Melvin considers role-playing to be the high point of human achievement. During the game, He wants Jimmy to get his character sheets back from the bullies and if he pulls it off he can have 10 grotes (Meaning 10 bucks) and pick from Melvin's so-called "wenches".
  • Bucky Pasteur: Tim Wersan
A buck-toothed nerd who awards Jimmy his skateboard for helping him deal with the bullies. It could be argued that he has feelings for Beatrice (see below), as can be seen in her diary about his reaction to her feelings for Jimmy.
  • Donald: A blonde nerd. Similar in appearance to Bucky, but his hair is neater.
  • Fatty: Ryan Cotler
An overweight nerd whom Jimmy has to wrestle repeatedly during gym class.
  • Cornelius: Chaz Stevens
A black nerd with a strong resemblance to Steve Urkel. Notable for falling down when he tries to fight. Fond of theater, and once played Juliet in the school play. This could be a hint that he is homosexual, as Jimmy has the option to give him flowers and kiss him.
  • Thad: Kevin Cahoon
A skinny redhead nerd with bad posture and a strong appreciation for Mandy.
  • Beatrice Trudeau: Caitlin Greer
A female nerd, Beatrice is often picked on by the more attractive girls at the school, especially Mandy due to her coldsores. She is the female lead of Chapter 1. She first hates Jimmy then starts to have feelings for him. She aspires to be some sort of doctor, and to find the cure for cancer.

Preppies

The preppies can be recognized by their Aquaberry sweater vests and generally tucked-in appearance.

  • Darby Harrington: John LaVelle
Snobbish leader of the preppies and WASP among WASPs. Later in life, he becomes a congressman.
  • Tad Smith-Althorp Smith: Baron Vaughn
An admitted nouveau riche preppie, Tad has little use for anyone he considers of lower station. He is disturbingly well versed in the legalities of what does and does not constitute inbreeding. He speaks in a fake "English accent" because he really wants to be British. He also has webbed toes on one foot, as a result of the aforementioned inbreeding.
  • Pinky: Kaija Matiss
A preppie girl with a princess complex. She was betrothed to Derby, despite the fact that they're first cousins, but dumped him after he was 3 minutes late for a date, and took to Jimmy instead. She is a member of the cheerleading squad and is the female lead of Chapter 2.
  • Bif Taylor: Andrew Rannells
    The preppie boxing champion.
  • Bryce Montrose: Ben Levin
  • Chad: Brandon Gill
Black preppie who keeps his right hand wrapped in tape. He also has a bull dog that attacks Jimmy if he gets too close.
  • Gord: Andrew Gehling
He earns the wrath of Johnny Vincent for dating Lola. Despite his date with Lola, however, he is one of the five boys Jimmy can woo. His father is a trial lawyer. Has dark brown hair.
  • Justin Vandervelde: Jaesun Celebre
  • Parker:Cory Anker
A preppie who at the beginning of Chapter 2 invites Jimmy to the Boxing ring. Has black hair.

Greasers

The greasers are a bunch of 1950's throwbacks, with slicked back hair and leather or denim jackets.

  • Johnny Vincent: Rocco Rosanio
Hot-tempered leader of the greasers and president of the Bullworth Hot Rod Club. He's hopelessly devoted to Lola, despite her infidelity.
  • Lola: Phoebe Strole
Johnny's manipulative, attention-seeking, promiscuous girlfriend. She is the female lead of Chapter 3.
  • Hal: Leonard Spinelli
    Noteably overweight greaser.
  • Lefty Mancini: Louie Torrellas
  • Lucky: Mike Nathan
  • Norton: Adam Chandler-Berat
The only black member of the greasers.
  • Peanut: Joe Aro
He is often found egging the boys' dorm at night.
  • Ricky: TJ Del Reno
  • Vance: William De Vizia
Often seen near the entrance of the auto shop in the afternoon. Has the option to be given flowers and kissed. Wears a leather jacket and has red hair.
  • Wade: Matt Monroe

Jocks

Varsity jocks will wear letterman's jackets. The lower ranking ones wear letterman sweaters.

  • Ted Sinclair: Alex Cendese
Quarterback of the school football team and alpha male among the jocks. He's also running against Earnest in the School Election.
  • Mandy Wiles: Elena Franklin
Queen bee of the Bullworth cheerleaders. She is the female lead of Chapter 4. She is very mean towards Beatrice, but admittedly insecure.
  • Damon West: Ben Curtis
Linebacker for the Bullworth Bullhorns, Damon's favorite things are football and shoving around anyone weaker than he is. He has a tendency to repeat whatever someone else says.
  • Bo: Jason Fuchs
    The smaller black jock.
  • Casey: Dimitri Michann
  • Dan: Matt Sauerhoff
A smaller jock with red hair. Refers to his biceps as "the big guns".
  • Juri (pronounced Yoo-ree): Lloyd Floyd
A jock with a Russian accent.
  • Kirby: Chris Kromer
One of the shorter jocks who is a closeted homosexual. In the "Movie Tickets" mission, he is seen running away with Trent after Jimmy caught them on a date. Insecure and ashamed of his sexual preference, he will always tell Jimmy not to say anything if kissed by him. Notable for calling out thanks when knee-dropped in the groin. Has brown hair and wears a letterman sweater.
  • Luis: Adam Scarimbolo
A large jock with wavy blonde hair. Always wears a cap.
  • Tom: Conor Paolo

Others

The students who aren't part of any of the cliques wear dark teal uniforms.

  • Angie Ng: Sue Jean Kim
The shy and bespectacled member of the cheerleading squad.
  • Christy: Maine Anders
A very attractive looking red haired girl. Christy loves to gossip about everyone, and loves making out. She is a member of the cheerleading squad.
  • Constantinos: Mathew Stadelman
An obnoxious jerk who enjoys taunting Jimmy. Jimmy can kick soccer balls at him in the mini game Penalty Shot.
  • Eunice Pound: Cody Rose
A fat and particularly unattractive girl who falls in love with Jimmy after he retrieves a box of chocolates that were stolen from her. Has a comically deep voice.
  • Lance: Dylan Schneider
  • Ray: John Walker
A tubby but very friendly guy.
  • Trevor: Adam Serwer

Prefects

  • Edward Seymour II: Ryan King
A Bullworth prefect who enjoys abusing his authority. He is a member of the sailing and yacht club. He is also attempting to become a police officer.
  • "The Punishment Prefect": A prefect with a buzzcut. Name unknown. He's the one who gives Jimmy a chore for his detention.
  • A black prefect. Name unknown.
  • A prefect with a flat top. Name unknown.

Little Kids

The little kids wear the same dark teal colors as the non-clique students. They'll tattle on Jimmy if they see him fighting, trying to break into lockers or otherwise breaking rules.

  • Gloria: Lea Ostner
A black girl and nerd in training who greets Jimmy with "Doctor Livingston, I presume?"
  • Karen: Cai Oglesby
A friendly girl with red hair.
  • Melody:
    A black haired girl.
  • Pedro: Daniel Tay
The smallest boy in school, Pedro is a target for the bullies. He wishes he could be big and strong like Jimmy. He is once seen in a bathroom stall with Eunice Pound for some strange reason.
  • Sheldon:John Magaro
Sheldon speaks in a very high pitched voice and is convinced that Dr. Crabblesnitch is his friend.

Townies

The townies are not actually students at Bullworth.

  • Zoe: Molly Fox
A former student at Bullworth, Zoe was expelled after complaining about the gym coach, Mr. Burton, hitting on her. She holds a grudge against the school, and particularly Mr. Burton. She is the female lead of Chapter 5, and participates in the story more than any of the other girls. Because of this she is probably meant to be the principal female character and love interest for Jimmy, given their many character similarities. In Chapter 6 she is re-enrolled at Bullworth.
  • Edgar Munsen: Jan Milewicz
The leader of the townies. He confesses that he didn't go to Bullworth because his mother couldn't afford to send him, and disliked the fact that the Bullworth students ran wild over the town.
  • Omar Romero: James Kennedy
Another townie, Edgar's right hand man.
  • Gurney:
A townie that Jimmy can hire as backup.
  • There are other townies whose names aren't given, or haven't been discovered yet.

Faculty

Teachers

  • Dr. Watts: Jarel Davidow
Bullworth's chemistry teacher. He seems to have performed some experiments on himself which do not help his mental state.
  • Dr. Slawter: Kurt Rhodes
The rather morbid biology and life sciences teacher. His hobby is taxidermy.
  • Ms. Dierdre Philips: Blair Ross
The fine arts and photography teacher. She's oddly fascinated by the artistic aspects of bananas. She later takes to helping Mr. Galloway, with whom she is romantically involved, with his drinking problems. Notably, she is also one of the few teachers that has no real problems with Jimmy, although she berates him for referring to her as "Miss. Philips". She is also one of the people who knows about the hobo.
  • Mr. Hattrick: Charles Turner
The math teacher, and least popular teacher in the school. Arrogant and self righteous, and tyrannical to his students. He frequently butts heads with Mr. Galloway for his drinking habit, at one point even guilting him into enrolling in an asylum. He has also been known to sell test answers to richer students, which gets him fired in the end.
  • Mr. Lionel Galloway: Robert Stanton
Bullworth's English teacher takes his subject seriously but is prone to drinking heavily when upset. Of all the teachers, he seems most fond of Jimmy, who he compares to Niccolò Machiavelli. It should be noted that aside from Ms Philips, he's also the only teacher Jimmy doesn't hold hostility towards.
  • Mr. Burton: Michael Boyle
A former pro football player who now serves as gym teacher. He has a very drill sergeant-like approach to teaching. He encourages bullying, and has also been known to hit on the female students. At the end of Chapter 5, he is supposedly fired.
  • Mr. Wiggins: Gary Yudman
    The history teacher.
  • Neil: Jesse Lenat
The gruff-spoken shop teacher. Emphasizes the educational benefits of "shutting up and working." He's quite frightened of today's youth because he thinks they are capable of anything.

Other Staff

  • Dr. Crabblesnitch: Ralph Gunderman
Principal of Bullworth Academy and all-around killjoy. Dr. Crabblesnitch takes a dislike to Jimmy from their very first meeting. While seemingly well-intentioned, he is completely oblivious to the bullying and corruption in his school, referring to it as "school spirit".
  • Miss Danvers: Lori Funk
Dr. Crabblesnitch's high strung secretary. She is fanatically devoted to Dr. Crabblesnitch, although she can be heard saying things behind his back. Obviously she hates Jimmy.
  • Nurse MacRae: Susan Blommaert
The school nurse. Somewhat morbid, she can be heard to say "life is torture, then you die" and similar things.
  • Mrs. Carvin: Patricia Kilgoriff
The stereotypically tight wound, prim and proper librarienne. She has a large fear of rats.
  • Mrs. Peabody: Flo Salant
The hall monitor and dorm mother for the girls. She wishes for Bullworth to be an all girls school.
  • Mr. Luntz: Susan Eden
The janitor, or as his official job title says, "sanitation engineer". He also works in the school's clothing shop.
  • Edna: Kathy Rossetter
The highly hygienically-challenged lunch lady. Perpetually filthy and prone to laughing maniacally, she harbors feelings for Dr. Watts (who just thinks she's fascinated with chemistry). She has a tendency to cough into any food she's preparing.
  • Mrs Pommelhorse: Susannah R Twinkle
The gym teacher's assistant. She is often seen in the background and is mostly silent.

Controversy

Bully has caused controversy among parents, and educators. Criticisms are due to the adult nature of previous Rockstar games, in particular, the Hot Coffee mod in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Groups such as Bullying Online and Peaceaholics have criticized the game for glorifying or trivializing school bullying. Most of these criticisms, however, were voiced before the contents of the game were actually available to the public. In 2006, the United States-based Entertainment Software Rating Board officially gave Bully a rating of "T" (suitable for ages 13 and up).

Sexuality

Bully creators have allowed characters to have a range of sexual orientations, such as bisexual, gay or straight. Jimmy Hopkins can kiss certain boys in the game, and the characters engage in natural dialogue that does not appear to have issues when it comes to sexuality . Bully is rated T for Teen by the ESRB (See below) and the box clearly states that there are some "sexual themes". Gamers can also go through Bully without ever kissing a boy if they don't want to. The simple exchange of a bouquet of flowers can help the characters explore, be they male or female. A similar approach was taken in the popular Sims and it's sequel.

ESRB

Prior to both the ESRB's rating and the release of Bully, Jack Thompson, a Miami lawyer and video game critic, filed a lawsuit attempting to have the game blocked from store shelves in Florida. Thompson declared the game a "nuisance" and "Columbine simulator" (in response, many of his detractors have mockingly referred to it as nothing more than a "Dennis the Menace simulator"). Also, the protagonist of the game, Jimmy, is not a bully towards the nerds and misfits, but more of a defender of unpopular kids and bully towards bullies. He also argued this point on Attack of the Show along with Adam Sessler (with him on the opposite end) on the show's "The Loop." Thompson's petition, filed with the 11th Judicial Circuit Court, asked for Wal-Mart and Take-Two to furnish him with an advance copy of Bully so he could have "an independent third party" play the game and determine if it would constitute a public nuisance in the state of Florida (in which case it could be banned). On 2006-10-11 Judge Ronald Friedman ordered Take-Two and Rockstar to provide him a copy of the game within 24 hours. On 2006-10-13 Friedman subsequently ruled in favor of shipping the game, noting that there was no content in the game that was not already on late night TV. Thompson responded to the ruling with fiery speech directed at the judge.

Similar attempts to have the game banned have also been made by the charity Bullying Online and Labour Party M.P Keith Vaz in the UK

In Belgium, a petition was started by 3 teachers to ban the game from the shelves. After the petition was closed with 32,000+ signatures, another petition was started in favor of the game.

When given preview build, however, the mainstream media took a generally positive opinion of the game. Press coverage has described the game as free-form, focusing on building a social network and learning new skills from classes, with strictly enforced punishments for serious misbehaviour (for example, having to clear snow away as punishment for hitting a girl).

Currys and PC World, both owned by DSG International plc said that they wish to not sell the game in the UK because it is "not appropriate for Currys' family-friendly image". The official statement lists what Currys believes is "the explicit link between violence and children" as the reason behind the ban, and continues: "We haven't taken this decision lightly, particularly considering the excellent relationship we have with Rockstar." However despite this decision other high street retailers including Game, HMV and Woolworths, Virgin Megastores have all announced an intention to stock the game. Interestingly, DSG stores still stock other Rockstar games including the GTA series, and other violent games like Manhunt, which both have BBFC18 ratings, where Bully has a BBFC15 rating.

References to popular culture

  • The phrase "I'm a daddy now!" is taken from the 1979 film Scum, were it is used in a near-identical context (adolescent superiority).
  • A variation on the Revenge of the Nerds theme plays when the Nerd clique chase you.
  • On an errand in Bullworth Town for a bike shop dealer he can be heard saying "Dude, where's my bike?" a reference to the film Dude, Where's My Car?.
  • Random Greaser NPCs can be heard saying "Stay Gold Ponyboy" and "Do it for Johnny". These are references to the S.E. Hinton novel, The Outsiders. In fact, the term Greaser and their appearence is also a possible reference to The Outsiders.
  • If the player beats up Melvin O'Conner, he will exclaim "’Tis only a flesh wound", in reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
  • Random Nerd NPCs can be heard saying "They say that kids imitate video game characters, but I have yet to turn into a moustachioed plumber". This is a reference to the Nintendo character, Mario.
  • The keycode for the observatory gate is '1138'. Given the fact that nerds control this area, it should come as no surprise that this is a reference to George Lucas' first film, THX-1138.
  • A nerd can be heard saying "I only have a few chapters left in Kavalier and Clay". This is a reference to The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay a 2000 novel by Michael Chabon which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2001.
  • The nerd Fatty sometimes greets Jimmy with the phrase "Hailing frequencies open". This is a reference to the various Star Trek TV shows.

Reception

The initial response to Bully has been generally very positive.

  • IGN-UK gave Bully an overall score of 9.4 out of 10, and especially praised its story elements, while pointing to backtracking as its most serious weakness.
    • IGN-US gave Bully an 8.9/10, and IGN-AU gave Bully a 9.1/10.
  • Games Radar gave the game a score of 9 out of 10. GR found the game rewarding and the story captivating, but mentioned frustrating stealth missions and found some of Jimmy's speech cheesy.
  • 1UP.com's Robert Ashley gave Bully a perfect 10.0 score, praising above all "its reimagining of the open-world genre". However, he does admit the game has its shortcomings, such as the unwieldy camera and "stupid-simple" stealth missions.
  • GameSpot gave Bully an 8.7/10 rating saying "Bully's unique setting and quality gameplay make for an exciting and memorable action adventure game."
