Hipa joined As I Lay Dying prior to the band's recording and subsequent release of their third studio album, shadows are security. Nick's ethnicity is Hawaiian, Japanese, and Irish. He lived in Hawaii until he was 10 and then moved to Fort Worth, Texas. He now lives in San Diego. He plays a black Gibson Les Paul Custom, and a white Gibson Les Paul Custom, along with Krank Krankenstein Amplifier Heads.
