She is married to writer Will Self, and grew up in Motherwell, Scotland.
She is currently a columnist for The Guardian and has contributed to many radio and television programmes. She was previously a columnist for The Independent and editor of the Guardian Weekend magazine. She has written opinion pieces about the burqa.
