The town has a population of 10,193, while Kanjiža municipality has 27,440 inhabitants.

Ethnic groups
Ethnic Hungarians make up the absolute majority in the municipality: 23,802 (86.52%) (2002 census). Other ethnic groups are: Serbs (2,037 or 7.4%), Roma (530 or 1.92%), and others.
Most of local communities have Hungarian majorities except Velebit, which is predominantly Serb.
