Rohith Vemula was a Dalit scholar who committed suicide at his hostel room in Hyderabad Central University. He had been suspended along with four other students for allegedly beating a Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad member. A police case was lodged in context to his suicide and included the name of Bandaru Dattatreya, Bharatiya Janata Party's MP from Secunderabad and Indian government's Minister of Labour and Employment. In his suicide letter, Vemula termed his birth in a Dalit family "a fatal accident".
