David Robert Joseph Beckham, footballer, born 2nd May 1975.

He is a midfield player and is noted for the quality of his free-kicks. He currently plays for Manchester United F.C..

Less than four years after his red-card for retailiating against a villainous Argentinian tackle in the 1998 World Cup, cost England the game and the chance of advancing in the tournament, Beckham is now (2001) a leader in fair play and skill, well deserving of the captain's armband awarded him by England managers Peter Taylor and maintained by Sven-Goren Erikson. Beckham's leadership, characterized by an astounding work rate and a positive attitude he passes on to his teammates, has led England to qualification for the 2002 World Cup Finals and an unprecedented 1-5 drubbing of Germany at home.

Beckham's highly publicized marriage to Spice Girl and media celebrity Posh Spice, otherwise known as Victoria Beckham, has made him even more of a target for the tabloid press.
