The Kanjiža town has a population of 10,193, while the Kanjiža municipality has 27,440 inhabitants. The territory of the municipality is shaped by the river Tisa and the Novi Knezevac Municipality and the river Tisa on the east, the Municipality of Senta on the south, the Municipality of Subotica on the west and the border with Hungary on the north. The proximity to the border, the free-way and the river Tisa makes it an imporant strategic point. The economy of Kanjiža is a healthy one; dominated by the Potisje-Tondach roof tile factory. Other successful firms are FIM Kanjiža, Keramika Kanjiža, various paprika refining firms, one of the best spa health centers in Serbia - "Banja Kanjiža" etc.

The present Municipality of Kanjiza was established on January 1, 1960 by merging the municipalities of Kanjiza, Horgos and Martonos and consists of 13 settlements: Adorjan, Horgos, Kanjiza, Mali Pesak, Mala Pijaca, Martonos, Orom, Tresnjevac, Totovo selo, Novo selo, Velebit, Vojvodia Zimonjic and Doline.

Kanjiža municipality includes the town of Kanjiža and 12 villages. The villages are:
- Adorjan (Hungarian: Adorján)
- Doline (Hungarian: Völgyes)
- Horgoš (Hungarian: Horgos)
- Male Pijace (Hungarian: Kispiac)
- Mali Pesak (Hungarian: Kishomok)
- Martonoš (Hungarian: Martonos)
- Novo Selo (Hungarian: Újfalu)
- Orom (Hungarian: Orom)
- Totovo Selo (Hungarian: Tóthfalu)
- Trešnjevac (Hungarian: Oromhegyes)
- Velebit
- Zimonić (Hungarian: Ilonafalu)

Ethnic groups (2002 census)
The population of the Kanjiža municipality is composed of:
- Hungarians = 23,802 (forming the absolute majority of 86.52%)
- Serbs = 2,037 (7.4%)
- Roma = 530 (1.92%)
- Others.
Most of local communities have Hungarian majorities except Velebit, which is predominantly Serb.
